  • Today I am sharing a spice blend for a copycat version of my favorite steak rub. Szeged Steak Rub, is by far my favorite and we use it a lot in our house, especially when grilling season comes around. Its great for burgers, steaks, even roasts in the oven. However, I am having an increasingly more difficult time of finding this at a price I am willing to pay. So today I share with you my Hungarian style steak rub for your consideration!
This rub is a bit different from your typical steak rub. If you like Montreal steak seasoning it is even different from that. Wherein the main flavors in that one are heavy on the coriander or fennel. This one is heavy on the flavors that you would find in many Hungarian dishes. Like paprika, pepper flakes, celery and dill seed blended with garlic onion, salt and pepper.
I spend a lot of time dissecting the original and I think I came very close! Of course mine is not an exact match but the flavor is full and delicious. Mine has a lot less salt than the commercial brand which is not a surprise because salt is cheaper than spice. So this is another reason to make your own!
You can control the amount of salt in yours. Add more if you like it saltier add less or none at all if you are on a restricted diet. I personally like the lower salt version because if someone wants more salt they can put it on their individual serving. This way everyone gets a ton of flavor without a ton of salt.
Overall, I am pleased with this combination and will now have a way to have my steak rub even if I can no longer procure it at a good price. This one is definitely a keeper and a stash buster! If you are a collector of spices like I am and like to buy in bulk, this is a great way to make this rub in bulk and have it on hand to give as gifts. Package in small jars, boxes or decorative bags and take some to each summer barbecue or party you are invited to. This makes a great hostess gift and will be well appreciated throughout the summer!
I hope you give this recipe for my version of Hungarian Style Steak Rub a try and I hope you love it!
    Happy Eating!

Another great seasoning blend! I have used several of your mixes and they are fantastick! My husband is very picky and one of his favorite seasoning (especially in his baked potato) is Lawwry's. Well I made a huge batch of your season salt and he loved it! We also love your taco seasoning! I make big batches and that's. Because I have an herb garden and I don't want them to go to waste so this year I have been dehydrating of it! The season salt I packed in cute little 1/2 pint bottles and handed out as gifts at work. I work in an old fashioned meat market and we have a million different spices we sell. My boss said that your season salt was worthy of a 1st place prize if entered at" taste of Georgia " It is that good. And me using my own freshly dried herbs put it over the top. I put your name on a the bottles and told everyone where to go for everything! You definitely should compete with the spice blends! Ty alot!

People, people, I just returned from a week long vacation on Galveston Island. Now being a Texan, one has many choices here for beef seasonings, rubs, marinade, etc. And if you know anything about Islanders, there are a stiff bunch to impress with a "new" food item. We shared this rub with our Island friends the night of the steak cookout, and again with our hamburger night. Yes, hamburger night. My hard to impress friends went a bit mad for this. Thank goodness for my even more restrictive salt editing (high B.P.). I have 0 left. That is zero left. And I have emails in my in basket for the "remember you promised to send me your rub recipe" requests. I forwarded them the address to Noreen's Kitchen and wrote "follow the magic." ♥♥♥♥♥

What a great idea of giving a homemade spice mix as a hostess gift! Thank you! P.S. I make your Italian Seasoning Mix. It’s awesome. I can’t remember the last time I bought it at the store.

Definitely going to make some of this Noreen 😊 Do you think it’s ok to grind up the red pepper flakes to make it finer? Thank you for so many great recipes!!!

Looks good, I will give this one a try. I think I will put the more chunkier spices in a coffee grinder first ( I have one I use for things other then coffee) to make them a bit smaller before mixing them all together.
