    Everybody Loves Raymond is one of my favorite sitcom comfort foods of all time. And I have nothing but respect for Ray Romano and everyone else that was involved with the show. That said, its always very interesting to me how 99.99% of the world's population chases money all day long, but the moment you get a good piece of it, it instantly becomes the least important thing in the world.

      I enjoyed his role in “Parenthood” and I was rooting for him and Lauren Graham to get together from his very first appearance. And, he was TOTALLY DIFFERENT than in ELR, which made me happy to know that he’d be able to continually work in TV and film as long as HE wanted to. Not every actor can reimagine themselves or get free of the roll that made them famous and it ends a lot of promising careers.

    I always wondered what the office would have been like if they'd brought Ray on instead of James Spader. I think he would have killed it.

    • @MissNayNay
      @MissNayNay Před 4 lety +27

      I think that he would have too. I actually am kind of upset that they didn't keep him and stuck with James Spader. James didn't fit the energy of the show. The characters were awkward, and Ray is awkward. James Spader's character Robert California was so damn creepy. They tried to make it work, but the energy between Spader 's character and the overall tone of the show was always a mismatch. I guess someone could argue that Robert California's awkwardness was in his creepiness, but I don't think so. His character gave off an uncomfortable energy, but it wasn't awkward, at least not the kind of awkwardness that went with the tone of the show. Ray's awkwardness, however, would have been a good fit.

    • @davidredden8361
      @davidredden8361 Před 4 lety +10

    Essentially Ray never played a character on Everybody Loves Raymond, he was literally being himself. When you look at his mannerisms, facial expressions, and articulation, you're looking at Ray Barone lol. Ray Romano and Ray Barone are not polar opposites in the least bit. You could also say the same of Seinfeld. Those comedians were portraying their actual personalities with a fictionalized backstory to accompany it.

    • @SkeletonManBones
      @SkeletonManBones Před 4 lety +2

      I disagree with the Seinfeld comment, Michael Richards especially - he was a very serious actor and did not like doing retakes of any scenes really and often got mad at his fellow comedians for laughing too much and not getting through scenes. Jason Alexander, wasn't even playing someone remotely close to him. He was portraying Larry David - he figured that out very early on in the show. Jerry as well, he is a very different person than how he acts on the show.. I mean come on. It's a SHOW so what do you do, you put on a slight face for the camera. Now Julia.. well she was probably the closest person to their character. Never take things at face value, always question the questionable.

    Good the doc had the insight to say get in there twice a week - if his family was any thing like the one on the show!! Growing up in a family like the one portrayed on the show is great for television, but not so much in real life. Having a childhood like that leaves on feeling like they've gone 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali ... in his prime. Good on you Ray - we love you and Phil for making us laugh all these years, thank you. I'm still happy the show is in syndication as we still watch it.

    He often tells that story that Scorsese never heard of him. Whoever said that is full of crap. First of all, everyone even outside of the business has heard of him. Second, Scorsese is in the business. It doesn't matter that he's in the movie-making area and Ray's in TV. There's NO way he never heard of him. So either someone is lying, or someone wanted to knock him down, or Scorsese is having memory issues

    2:12 Scorsese had never heard of him because Scorsese does cinema. Television particularly sitcom television doesnt register on that radar.

    For Romano, it must be unusual for him to find he is anonymous to somebody. As he said, it's like living in a self-imposed bubble. It's amusing when someone says to me, " You've never SEEN some show?!? " or " You've never HEARD some band?!? " They are so incredulous its comical. But we all have our own tastes, our own venues. And according to Romano, he got the part for his talent, not celebrity status.

    I identify. I retired when my place of work closed down in 2015. And I still feel kind of rootless. And I was on the go before. With the job and my outside activities of writing music reviews and doing interviews with musicians. And then the print magazine closed at the same time as the job disappearing due to the internet.

    Try having no creative outlet at all. Something is bottled up in me but I can't express it because I can't sing, can't play the guitar, etc. There has to be some outlet for me but I am still searching.
