They can’t make a great Superman movie. He is everything Hollywood hates

They're Cramming what looks like 70 years of Superman character development and crossovers into One Movie.

This just feels like the “Spider-Man 3 effect” with all of these new startup reboots for the last 15+ years!

Luke Skywalker, Superman and Optimus Prime. 3 pop culture symbols of the ideal masculinity. All 3 have been, in some way, subverted or mistreated by Hollywood.
@@tyrannosuperior5248 Indiana Jones, Dr Who, and many more.
What to do?
For myself, I've gained 7lbs of muscle, fixed my credit and am doing my best to be a real life man to look up to. I figure be the change I wanna see.
It's been a process I started after seeing which way the cultural wind was blowing around 2014.
If they refuse to depict healthy masculine archetypes, then I'll just become one😁
Well, no, Luke Skywalker was no embodiment of masculinity, and Optimus Prime wasn't even human. Personally, my heroes were more of the brainy type, like Reed Richards, but I recognize that most men idolized Superman, not Reed.
If you look at ANY of these fictional characters as ‘ideal masculinity’, you need SO much therapy. Seriously.
Add Indiana Jones and Axel Foley to that list.
Look what Disney did to Han Solo, and Indiana Jones. Male characters aren't allowed to be anything but stupid comedy relief for some strong perfect girl boss.
Something tells me the Superman clone/variant that becomes Bizarro will be a not-so-subtle way to try and crap on the more serious take that Henry Cavill had on the character.
Considering Corenswet even LOOKS like a bit of a young Cavill...something tells me that "Evil superman" will be even more suspiciously in resemblance to Cavill's Superman. He will probably perform an act(Iike a neck break?) that is inserted to OVERTLY remind people of Cavill's Superman and say "See, this is NOT how its done!"
I can feel it.
My fear for SUPERMAN is the current hollywood trend of emasculated male over apologizing while stronk girl bosses blames everyone for her problems, so tired of these tropes.
That will likely be what this is. Superman is a privileged beta male while super girl is a strong girlboss.
I wouldn't be surprised any- if/when it happens
Lois is most likely gonna be stronk gurl who can't do nothing wrong, and is gonna lecture and fix Superman about 'rights'. That's the trend right now after all.
@@TsukabuNosoratori2maybe she'll somehow end up with Supermans powers
The actress who plays Lois said she would be the one saving Superman, not the other way around, so...
The Girl Shouldn't be on the Panel, there are so many Women who love Superman, it shouldn't have been that hard to find an actual fan to be on the panel instead of just putting a girl who doesn't care what she watches as long as it's "not Gay"🙄 what a weird comment, at least make it sound like your a fan, sister.
I want a "back to basics" on Superman. Truth, justice, and the American way. Someone who is different and isolated, but constantly strives forward, doing what is right and ready to hold out a hand to someone. A self-sacrificing, altruistic protector who is strong, but gentle. Hell, My Hero Academia's All Might is probably the closest Superman I've seen in a long time (since Justice League/Justice League Unlimited ended) and All Might is a Japanese anime/manga character, who is basically a homage to Superman.
said the same thing elsewhere "truth, justice and the AMERICAN way", as an Aussie l was NEVER "offended" by that statement.
Prolly helps we're all Anglo and share a lot of culture and heritage. Plus, for every fault it legit has, American rule has been incredibly gentle and prosperous compared to most other hegemons.
@@duncanharrell5009😆 I don't even really consider Aussies, Canadians, Kiwis and Brits to be "foreigners".
I don't understand saying Superman is not "different and isolated". I don't think he's really either. It's been confirmed by the Lasso of Truth on multiple occasions that Superman doesn't think of himself as Superman but as a human named Clark Kent. He's nothing but your average farmboy from Kansas and is only "different' in that he has superpowers. Clark Kent is who is; Superman is what he does.
@@BiggieTrismegistus Yes, Clark does think of himself as human. Clark is who he is, Superman is just an alter-ego. However, there is still that barrier of "truly fitting in" that lingers. It is the fact the world around him views him as different, despite how he is American as apple pie. He is an alien and that only makes some people fear him. The God-like super-powers just adding to the uncertainty some feel. He is the unknown. He is not like them. Which is why he strives constantly to bridge that gap and show the USA and the world the person he actual is. That there isn't anything to be afraid of.
That is part of why he is Superman, to gain acceptance and prove his worth to his adopted planet. Until he achieves that, he can't reveal to the world who and what Clark Kent is without losing the precious peace and normalcy he has as Clark Kent. So he bears some isolation and such because he cannot be 100% himself around the vast majority of people, with only a few people ever learning his secret identity in most iterations of the character.
They are cherry picking various old comic book plotlines.
Superman is my favorite character. It is a shame what they continually do to him.
Hollywood is incompetent.
Mine too
Humility is always important to me for a hero. Harry Potter was another example.
I like humble characters, too, but there's something admirable about the guy who can mouth off and then back it up. I can't think of a superhero like that, but there have been several real-life examples, Muhammad Ali, Larry Bird, etc. Of course, it's always amusing to see someone mouth off and then get humiliated, like almost everyone who said they were going to beat Mike Tyson and then ended up on the canvas 30 seconds into the fight.
Dean Kain was not better than Reeves. The genius of the Reeves portrayal, that no one else could match, is that he made Superman and Clark look like two COMPLETELY different people. There isn't a single other actor of Superman that managed to do this. We are required to give total suspension of disbelief that a pair of glasses is a sufficient disguise.
My son was remarking on how different he looks with just the glasses as we were watching Superman II the other night.
@@cc3775 It's all about the acting. Reeves put a lot of effort to change his voice, to hunch when walking (hiding his height), to wear clothing that covers his physique, and to act in a very meek/bumbling manner.
All that stuff has an effect in making a person see Superman and Clark as two seperate people. No other actor put in that level of work. Hell, I haven't seen that level of effort from the animations, and I don't think the comics have ever really put that much effort in either.
Reeve did it best. You can have your favorites but he was the only one that could genuinly make the audience think that this could legit be two people.
@@tomaO2 I never really thought about it but you’re right. He was two completely different people.
Dean Cain had a new take on Clark Kent. Loved his Clark Kent. His superman was ok.
Story telling has been lost because we now live in a world where the entire entertainment industry is terrified of offending the kind of people who are always offended about something.

James Gunn James Gunning up Superman. Called it.
I don't know why people are baffled. Anyone familiar with Gunn knows he was a bad choice. He's an irreverent person and Clark is the opposites of that. Kal El was raised by John and Martha with middle America values. Those values have respect at their core. Irreverent people can't accurately adapt that.
Plus, Gunn has said before that he prefers adapting lesser known characters because it frees him up to do more of what he likes. The day WB hired him was the day they put DC live actions movies 6 feet under. They were on life support as it is, this was their last chance. They won't get another for a while after this reboot universe fails.

I like the no-kill rule w/Superman. For me, the biggest disappointment in Man of Steel was Snyder forcing Supes to break his no-kill rule in the first movie.
I think this movie plot has great potential, except for one thing, they are totally setting up Lex Luther as a Trump parody. And that will ruin the entire movie for me. I'm still waiting for LL to be done right in live action, not done wrong in a new way.
I had a much bigger issue with Clark letting Jonathan die than killing Zod, myself. If they'd followed up with killing Zod at all with Clark carrying the guilt of what he had to do, it might have been interesting, but they never did anything with it in a sequel. Even in Man of Steel, it wasn't really given any weight as the very next scene is Superman destroying the drone and the "I just think he's kinda hot" gag. They needed one more scene of Superman and Lois coming out of the station to reflect on both Zod's death and the destruction in Metropolis imo. Didn't have to be much, but just something to give that stuff a little more emotional weight instead of the jarring cut to the destroyed drone scene.
@@ChuckM0503 I agree in all points.
That's such a dumb thing to really say Because Superman never had no kill rule Yes he will save people but if he has to he will kill the save people and have you not ready to become book he has killed villains and creatures to save people's lives You know what I'm saying but it's only at last resort the whole point of the Snyder thing is that this is Superman first time fighting something that he can't just easily stop That was the lesson the lesson was learned that killing and knowing when to kill and when to be ready to save people and went to sacrifice everybody keeps ignoring the complexities of what Superman is because everybody wants him to be already Superman That's not how that works Superman then just started out as Superman if you read original Superman stuff Superman was a jerk honestly before he was turned into the big blue Boy scout everybody love so much You know what I'm saying There are levels to these characters and it just seems like everybody is stuck in one person's performance of a character that they can never see past that performance You have to look past what you known to see Christopher Reeve Superman as or just sea Superman in general because most people who say this don't even read Superman comic books but they love Superman but they only watch the Christopher Reed movies in the DC animated Superman so you wouldn't know how he evolved and changed you know
I'm against the no-kill rule because it makes no sense in Superman's line of work and it makes him out to be selfish and childish. What's more important to him, protecting innocent lives in immediate, catastrophic danger or feeling good about his moral self-image? A Superman who cares more about feeling good about himself is no hero at all. A Superman who does what's necessary to protect the innocent, even if he feels remorse and regret over it, is a hero I would respect and look up to.

No it doesn't. Superman was never "hated by the authorities" in the '30s. He went AFTER corrupt politicians and corporate powerholds. One of the big issues is that these IPs have an entrenched legacy and fan base, so the stakes are always automatically high. I actually think the huge amount of history of this character makes it hard to do a new Superman movie, as his enemies are so well known that its hard to rewrite one of them to be interesting in a movie. Also, superman is so powerful that they have to somewhat lower the stakes, so the special effects don't drive the movie to unprofitability.

There might be an issue with Ultraman. There's a live scifi-action serries from Japan called Ultraman. So the name might need to be altered for foreign markets to avoid trademark disputes. Otherwise the whole clone thing is probably the only way to introduce modern Bizarro. The no kill rule only makes sense as a means to keep governments from freaking out over superman (cause they can't stop him). Killing would only make people more paranoid and fearfull about Superman. Although I'm pretty sure that was more of a mandated comics code than a rule of conduct. So no hero was ever out to kill. Even if they did nobody ever dies and stays dead in the comics. It almost feels like they are cramming to many plot threads from the late 90's~2010 into a reboot. That was my problem with the Green Lantern.

Huge Hercules was the first superhero, not Superman.
You said he started it all.
honestly i love the anti war plot , but yea outside of that the rest is very meh
I'm sure that Superman's outfit is the three primary colours to symbolise that he is an everyman. Because all colours are made up from those 3.
This sounds......boring. It sounds insular, self-involved, and hollow. No thanks.
It sounds like your comments
I'll reserve judgment for AFTER the movie comes out. Besides, for all we know, this leaked script might not even be the one used in the actual movie
This sounds fine. This sounds like the plot of 1980’s-90’s DC. It introduces bizzarro and luthor as set ups. Jesus Christ. The plot with luthor is straight out of the books.
Bizarro is too.
Superman not killing in a world of killers works.
I’m not sure how this shit is emasculating? Super man is going against the world and taking the Christian high road by not killing?
I found some of this discussion interesting until you said Dean Cain was the best Superman. You've got to be kidding??!
This movie will make almost as much as the average lemonade stand. The character is no longer culturally relevant and associated with failure and bad movies.
I cannot fathom the sheer incapability Hollywood’s when it comes to Superman.
So the plot of the new movie is essentially Superman vs. Elite. Could be worse. It was one of the better written comics although the art style in the cartoon was kinda meh.
Did you guys ever watch Smallville? I think their version of Lex was truly the best??
You either die a laughinstock that can't do SUPERMAN right, or live long enough to see yourself become the next Sony.
What is so hard about staying true to the source material?! It would be an automatic hit! Hollywood destroys everything
Dune 2?
1:28 Who's the HOT chick on the right...and why is Snake Eyes from G.I Joe in this Superman movie? 😮
I don't necessarily think you're wrong for being concerned, and I even agree with some of these concerns because of the influence of "current year" in blocbusters in general, but I'm having a hard time understanding how you're drawing a lot of these conclusions based on that description. How is Superman being against the popular norm by not wanting to kill his enemies and then inspiring other heroes to follow in his example an emasculation of his character that undermines and destroys a heroic American icon? I don't really see what's comvoluted about this either. The plot may have a large supporting cast, but the story seems very straightforward. The only thing I can sympathize with someone not liking is calling Bizarro Ultraman, but he's not literally the actual Ultraman. It's not the same kind of merging of characters as Zodd and Doomsday was. He's just a pre-degredation Bizarro that doesn't preclude the potential existence of actual Earth 3 Ultraman down the line if they ever decide to do that. Seems to me like what Gunn is doing with Superman is like what the Russos did so well with Steve Rogers in their Captain America movies where the hero fights the cultural tide of modernity by sticking to his "old school" values of virtue and heroism and comes out on top in the end by sticking to his principles and inspiring others. More directly, it sounds like Gunn is trying to do his take on the story, "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, & the American Way?" He's replacing the Elite with the Authority (and I wouldn't be surprised if they throw Manchester Black into the Authority) while, on a metatextual level, criticizing the popularity of the "evil/edgy Superman" trope. Whether or not the movie works on a stylistic level for Superman or whether or not it comes together remains to be seen, but I'm kinda surprised how little I have a problem with this supposedly "weird" plot summary. I actually kijda like it, and I fail to see how there's any intent from Gunn to mistreat the character based on that summary.
I think Gunn has a capacity to be anti Hollywood agenda and pro traditional Superman while not having to deconstruct Superman.
Ultimately Man Of Steel is a deconstructed Superman, just maybe not a liberal deconstructed Superman traditionally associated with deconstructive art, but nonetheless deconstructed.
Not every Superhero is compatible with that. Batman is because he's a psychological character. It's not that Zack tried to make Superman dark. It's that he did deconstructive stuff with him that's not necessary.
I think Gunn is anti deconstruction. And could do a great job as a result.
That's exactly my feeling too. I mean, when I think about PEACEMAKER, omg that show was both corny and hokey but also genuine and unironically patriotic. James Gunn can give us characters that are self-aware of how anachronistic they seem and somehow that makes them aspirational.
BTW: Bizarro FTW! I cannot imagine a more perfect vehicle for James Gunn's special type of ridiculous but truly wrenching characters....laughable and tragic, hilarious and heart breaking. I am sort of expecting for the Bizarro arch to end up stealing the entire movie.
My kryptonian is part Daxamite and is very full of himself like homelander which causes him to get into trouble
Chris Pratt would make a very good Booster Gold.
James Gunn's plan for Superman in modern day is to have people around him consider Superman --THE MOST POWERFUL HERO IN DC COMICS...to be a dork that no one takes seriously. So these are the choices that Hollywood gives Superman fans: MAN OF STEEL where Superman is portrayed as an EMO outcast who doesn't know if humanity is worth saving or not...or SUPERMAN LEGACY where he's portrayed as an out of touch dork that people criticize or snicker at behind his back. HOLLYWOOD IS RUN BY SATANISTS. PERIOD.
What are you talking about lol
I’ll wait till it gets to Amazon prime for free.
Sounds like a throw away plot to Superman the Animated Series to me. Doesn't sound so far fetched.
