What's Wrong With The CBS Version of Rudolph, And How It Can Be Fixed (Updated)

  • AS OF 2019, Rudolph began airing on the Freeform Network as well as on CBS. While CBS continued to air the poorly edited version described in this video, Freeform broadcast ALMOST the entire uncut special (even the Peppermint Mine scene) except THE TITLE SONG AT THE END. The finale scene was inexplicably relegated to a tiny silent box underneath a commercial for other Freeform shows. It seems there is no way to truly enjoy the complete Rudolph except on DVD/Bluray/home video, where the show can be found complete but sometimes with sound issues. If Freeform restores the finale, it will be the best option--and it is better than CBS. Tell Freeform to restore the finale here: freeform.go.com/feedback

Just watched the newest, Bluray version and they seem to have made all of the corrections and restorations. Looks beautiful and sounds great. It just doesn't have "Fame and Fortune", which I remember seeing/hearing years ago.

Yeah, I agree. I still have a DVD from some time that has the complete special with the scenes CBS and Freeform keep removing for reasons (like making room for commercials and cutting the finale to show what's next). So, basically, DVD and Blu-Ray are going to be the only way to see this special in all its glory (although it would be nice if a future video version had the original credits from before they redid the ending because people wrote angry letters about the misfit toys being forgotten).

To elaborate on the intro above, in 2019 Rudolph began airing on two different networks. It continued to air on CBS in the usual bad edit described in this video. It also began airing on the cable network Freeform, where it will air about six times over the course of December. Freeform's version is a very close miss. Its version has no sync issues or significant sound issues. It includes the entire We Are Santa's Elves scene, the original We're A Couple of Misfits scene unaltered, and even includes the Peppermint Mine scene (not aired since 1964). The crucial problem with Freeform's broadcasts so far is that it cuts off the title song at the end. It is the finale scene, it is the big moment. But Freeform reduces it to a silent bottom-of-screen square while promotional commercials run above. So, hopefully they'll correct this oversight eventually (their version of Frosty had the end credit scene), but for now, there is still no perfect broadcast of Rudolph.

@@udpert I think the reason for that is because of time. Keep in mind, even though Freeform's print reinstates some of the material left out in CBS' version, it runs for the same 1 hour timeslot, and by the time the credits are supposed to roll, it's a minute before it ends. I guess it's just what happens when a network wants to keep something as intact as they can, but still has to work with time

The ending of Charlie Brown Christmas was messed up like that too. It was so sweet when they sang the last notes of Hark The Herald Angels with their little noses up in the air. At some point the ending of the song, THE BEST PART OF IT was cut off. Forever! And eventually I think that it got the box treatment too. Rudolph is the best. Thanks again for the history. I know you think you're cute with the "when I was five" as if others here are somehow less "mature" than you are, but here goes: This movie IS the epitome of Christmas for many. It's one of those movies you can watch multiple times in a season, and see something new each time. It brings tears to my eyes as I write this, because there is never going to be any way to get that magic back from watching Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer for the first time. After children, inevitably, learn that Santa Claus isn't real (in the physical sense), that wonder of Christmas is gone forever. It's gone for the kid, it's gone for the parent. Christmas then becomes more about giving and receiving, and less about decorating and music and dreams. For many, many of us this show is the closest thing we'll ever get to reliving our childhood. The first time I saw this show, that I can remember, is 1977. I hope to have many more years watching it.

I love watching Rudolph on TV every year. It's my all time favorite Christmas special. As I've gotten older, I've seen and heard how it many cases, it doesn't get released, nor broadcast the right way.
Now I have the 2007 DVD release of the special. It has both the peppermint scene, and follows up with the ending where Santa comes to pick up the misfit toys. The Fame and Fortune song is one of the extras on the DVD. I would have loved to get the blu ray of the special, but I have heard that some people weren't at all happy about the extras on the set. During the song "There's Always Tomorrow", there is an extremely high pitched noise happening in the background of both the CBS version and the version that you've included here. I think it may have to do with the restoration. It wasn't until Universal bought DreamWorks Animation that Rudolph, Frosty and Santa were given proper remasters. Maybe Classic Media didn't have the resources keep in mind that Eric Ellenbogen sold the company to Entertainment Rights at one point then bought it back. This year (2023) I watched the 1964 Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer for the first time. From the videos about all the revisions made to this film since 1965, I came to the conclusion that it should be given a "director's cut" version of sorts with all the scenes uncut with a longer airing time period, no audio issues whatsoever and much shorter commercial periods (I know that networks need to cover expenses), but I feel there must be some way this special could be broadcast in its entirety. Just my two cents' worth.
Now, a couple of questions comes to mind:
    1. Is there a way to correct the slight interruption that is shown here at 37:40 when Yukon Cornelius says, "And we'll all be rich!", just when he says "rich"?
    2. The sequence in which the misfit toys are singing their song to Rudolph and Hermy shown here has a few "warped sound" problems at certain points throughout. A little close listening will be necessary. I hope this sequence can have its audio corrected in the future (especially on DVD and the network broadcasts [Freeform apparently has this issue solved, from what I've read in the comments herein])
Other than that, I applaud your effort 👍👍👍👍👍👍
