  • Here's a test of the Emergency Broadcast System from ABC affiliate WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas, TX. This test goes off without a hitch, as the requisite dual tones of 853 and 960 Hz are heard for 23 seconds.
    Voiceover by ?? (with the EBS script displayed on screen via different slides, set in Helvetica Medium; albeit differing in some areas from how the voiceover read the script).
    "This station serves the Dallas operational area." (What, no reference to Fort Worth or the Metroplex? ;-\ )
    This aired on local Dallas-Fort Worth TV on Thursday, December 14th 1978 at about 3:51pm (not from Chicago, but still of interest nonetheless).
    About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
    The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

    Thanks for sharing...apparently, WFAA used this sequence into at least the mid-80s, as there's also a truncated 1983 test elsewhere on YT w/the same graphics and VO, but it's one of those "cell phone" hack jobs, so nice to see a complete version as it actually appeared on TV!

    Seeing as I grew up in Dallas and was constantly watching TV, I almost certainly will have watched this at some point in its original broadcasts. 😁

    Wow. brings back memories. As a kid I memorized the whole spiel and would rattle it out along with the tv. probably the first passage of anything I committed to memory (other than Bible verses).

    Now we have the EAS (Emergency Alert System)... Though, you do hear the old EBS Tone during RMT's....

      @PhirePhlame Před 6 lety

      Non-weather EAS activations also use the tone. Likely for backwards compatibility, as pre-EAS emergency radios would be activated by that tone.

    I remember this when I was growing up in the 70s. In the NY area the symbol was a circle with checked lines. Scared me to death everytime...

      What does KDFW/KXAS/KTVT's Screen Look Like?

    • @nicka727
      @nicka727 Před 3 lety +2

      EAS CEC KTVT from 1986 is found and it’s similar to WSNS but the background color is blue. KXAS had a Civil Defense logo possibly and I’m unsure of KDFW’s slide.

    How much WFAA or Dallas stuff do you have? I enjoy all of your posts but being from Fort Worth I really like the old Dallas stuff.

    Love your clips! How familiar are you with weather warning sounds/tickers? I have been trying to do some research on the early ones but have found very little information.

      Civil Defense.

    • @EdwardRingwald
      @EdwardRingwald Před 7 lety +6

      Some stations have incorporated the Civil Defense logo into their Emergency Broadcast System test slides. For instance, Sarasota's WWSB Channel 40 (more known as ABC 7 today) used to incorporate a large version of the Civil Defense logo with the words "Emergency Broadcast System" on a light blue background below the logo.
