So just curious, as when I am catching, I can see my sons spin and can differentiate his pitches. However, the closer to FB spin the pitch is, the harder it is to differentiate and react to. But I definitely see the curve spin and perhaps seeing the ball come out of the hand subconsciously tells me to expect forward spin rather than back spin. But hitters can read the spin. The cutter is tough for me to pick up, but I can tell when a 4s is thrown compared to a 2. What I can't do is actually process the info quickly enough to react. Curve spin to me is easy to pick up and react to it. Especially a hanger that's more in my line of sight.(from a hitter and catchers perspective)

These would likely classify as those "differences" we talk about. At the higher levels with higher spin rates, velo, and shorter reaction times it's still very difficult to read spin the box and use that information to make a swing decision.

That's why Rivera's cutter was so dominant, he was throwing it with the exact same motion and spin as a fastball, it was pretty much just a tilted fastball.

If hitters couldn’t read spin then NOBODY would be able to hit even a high schooler’s slider. You would never see a take vs a big league slider
but big league hitters recognize the spin and take it all the time. I think trying to say that hitters “can’t read spin” is just simply not factual.

MLB level velo and spin rates makes it extremely hard to read spin on a pitch. At a point of velo and spin rate, two pitches spinning differently will look nearly the same

When someone is consistently throwing 102 and u have a millisecond to react to a wipeout slider or a heater, your chance to read the spin in that baseball becomes so slim, your chance to read the spin is exactly how long the ball is in flight, which is so small it’s insane, that’s for the MLB at least.

I played 40 years ago, so ignore this if you wish. I agree with everything Eric C said. I would also say the 2 other comments ahead seem to really disagree. I also in large part agree with them. It’s crazy how good pitching is these days. Maybe those 2 guys played to a higher level, that’s the fun of playing high. You play with people that know more. Milliseconds is an unhelpful. I don’t practice things as a hitter to make a decision. I practice things as a hitter to react. When I see Kevin Towers slider thrown at my front hip, I had better stay in and drive it away. If it was 3-4” above my knees I had better hold up. I knew because of the tight ass dot. It was a reaction to a red light at a certain height. I could see types of tumble, I could see that curve spin and slider, and fastball, and I wasn’t any good. None of that is helpful if I wait to see it, and decide what to do. I am also open to pitching now is insane how tough it is and maybe that is obsolete. I do really like this dude on tread.

@@alligatorarms9086 I agree with what you are saying because it is true hitters can read spin and use that to react to pitches, however when a guy starts throwing above 95, your reaction time has to be perfect because it has been tested that a ball coming in that fast released past the mound gives you literally milliseconds to swing, and that pitch could be a 87 mph slider that starts middle middle and then just disappears. Basically the higher you go in baseball the less you can rely on reading spin because you have Astronomically less time to react to those pitches.

Greg Maddux is the only guy that can tunnel. With a big leaguer missing 9 inches on average with his FB no one should be talking about tunneling.
Throw all your shit down the middle and let it run, cut, curve, wiggle and see what happens. 1 hitter vs 9 guys on the field and a round bat vs a round ball. Fuck it.

We certainly believe that more than one pitcher in the world can tunnel, but the Rays have really revolutionized the "throw everything at the middle" approach with some of their pitchers who have outlier movements. We'll implement that thought process for some of our athletes who have elite pitch profiles, but are struggling to command them.
