Should You Chase Spin Efficiency If You Have Supination Bias?

- There's a lack of appreciation in high school, college, and even pro ball for what supination dominant pitchers can bring to the table.😤
Instead of trying to get them to pronate more on sinkers and change ups, get them to use seam shift to go the other way.
There's a reason why the best MLB pitchers in terms of stuff are supination biased guys.

I’ve seen this video before.. I came back to it after noticing my velo is way up on fast balls where my hand almost hooks the outside of the baseball. Also feels easier on my arm… interesting stuff!
I really appreciate your videos.
Great video! I have a question, could you post a video of examples of seal shift
I didn't know this existed, I cant throw a a 2 seam or sinker. or any changeup with any run
Love the video! I had a quick question though. I'm someone who tends to naturally have a little bit of cut to the ball, and I've learned to make it a strength instead of a weakness. I've never been able to throw an effective change-up though because I struggle to get to the inside of the ball, and I really struggle to get any arm side run. I was wondering what are some ques I can use to supinate and still get the ball to run? Thank u!
Messing with two seam changeup grips and maintaining your natural supinated wrist position can help induce some armside movement. If you struggle to get inside of the ball, you're likely just getting behind the ball throwing an efficient changeup. But depending on your efficiency, different changeup grips may induce seam shifted wake which would push your changeup armside. Look at guys like Logan Webb, Pablo Lopez, and Zac Gallen for some grip options.

Great video! But I was just wondering at what velocity does Seam shifted wake has an effect?

We don't know, but Dr.Barton Smith (lead researcher of seam shifted wake) has said it isn't there at 60 mph.
I wonder if I'm actually supinating, even though I'm feel like im pronating, because I cant get arm-side action with a 2 seam grip and my changeup grip (both 2 seam and 4 seam) move more downward and not so much run (if i throw it bad, it turns into a slider-ish pitch)
I try to throw every pitch like a football, and when I throw hard / alot, i feel the soreness in my tricep above the elbow. Maybe I need to try and get super inside the ball? I really want a good arm-side pitch to go with my normal ones that go glove side but I cant seem to find a grip and I dont want to change the way I throw :(
Would you ever recommend a Trevor Hoffman changeup grip (the one with the index/middle/ring fingertips off the ball) to a natural supinator? Seems like an option. Throw it like a fb.
Agree 100%. However, what do you do with the guys who flash the ability to throw a changeup with high efficiency, but cut their fastball?
If they can spin the changeup efficiently what holds them back from being able to do the same with the FB? Especially guys that profile as ride FBs with higher arm slots?

So long as chasing efficiency doesn't present any pain or injury risk, sure, it may be worth trying. But, as we mentioned in the video, we try to stay away from altering the natural way a pitcher provides force to the fastball as injury risk can rise and velo drops in some cases.
How do I tell if I'm supinated vs. pronation delivery? A lot of times I feel like I'm almost under the ball when I release my fastball and it cuts so much when that happens. But I've been trying to focus so hard on staying on top of the ball to get sink.
There are assessments that we run our remote athletes through, but you can also tell from Fastball spin efficiency or inefficiency and the ability to throw breaking balls with velocity
I’m learning to pitch as adult in the rec league. I struggle with cutting a fastball but this makes me feel better since I never realized that my natural release is supination and not pronation. Pronation to me feels really awkward. I try to play catch doing it, with intention, but if I’m just throwing without thinking, I supinate. What can I do to get better because locating is a struggle and I have a hard time throwing a strike with command because it doesn’t go where I want it to.
Here are some basics in improving command:

Do you think a sweeper is a good pitch for a left-handed? (my sinker is thrown arround 10 20)

Yes, tons of lefties throw sweepers. Check out our Slider videos to see which slider performs best for lefties.

My sons supination puts wicked movement on the ball. Then he pronates upon release to finish which has been great as well. But, it seems to affect his 4 seam fastball. Maybe he’s pronating too early? Or should he not think to pronate at all on his 4 seam?
If he naturally supinates, it can negatively affect movement as well as increase injury risk if he tries to pronate
is there a way to improve a pitcher's ability to supinate? I am slightly supination dominant but I would like to throw my curveball harder with efficient spin.
Not particularly. However, your curveball doesn't need high efficiency when throwing it harder. As long as it doesn't get too much gyro, then it's fine
what is the formula to convert rapsodo data to trackman data?
It's pretty difficult to convert since the data is collected in different ways on each piece of tech. The movement on Rapsodo doesn't directly convert to TM because Rapsodo measures spin via taking pictures after release, while TM measures total movement observed. There isn't a ratio between the two movement readings, per se, because of other forces on the ball like SSW due to spin efficiency or lack thereof.
my 2 seam has the right tilt and efficiency but i’ve noticed i can’t the ball to come out of my hand with the seams in the right spot and it kinda wobbles would the grip fix that it is there something else
Messing with different grip orientations could help.
@@treadathletics by grip orientation do you mean like turning the ball in my hand such as instead of throwing a straight 2 seam throw a 1 seam
Yes, there are plenty of options. You may just need to keep messing with different orientations!
Why do I have zero backspin on my 4 seam
You're probably cutting your fastball
