  • Why MIZUNO Don't Make a BEST SELLING Driver? Well that's down to one thing, people's misconceptions about their products, Drivers and Woods especially and that goes for many other brands that aren't necessarily known for their Woods. Lets put the latest offering to the test to see if it struggles in any area and why Mizuno Don't make a Best Selling Driver...

    I purchased my STX 230 a month ago and have played ten rounds. I chose it after testing the STZ 230, Callaway Paradym, and Ping G430. It is long, and I can work it in both directions when needed. Pair it with the Mizuno RB Tour ball and enjoy the high-launching and low-spin bombs.

BTW: My past club fitting experience(s) with retailers is that retailers focus on 3 brands maybe 4 brands if you are lucky which unfortunately excludes Mizuno. 15 years ago, playing weekly round with guys. Spraying tee shots, looked down graphite shaft splintering. At turn asked pro to demo 2 clubs on back 9. He suggested Callaway and Mizuno. Drove on each driving hole. Mizuno won, partners agreed! Except for a couple year Cobra dalliance have been a Mizuno guy since. Just works! Most forgiving for this 73 yr old 21 handicap. As a young man i owned in the late 1990s a Mizuno driver. His head was smaller than any 3 wood is answering if i hitted the ball it sounded like a empty aluminum coke bottle. This model was the "hot metal et(?)" and i got them from a playing pro. With this driver I scored 7 under rounds abd won the championships in my club. Its was a fantastic performing driver's with a unique awful sound. But everybody knew immediately that the champion and best player is on the course! This driver crashed later and see i sticked from this moment on my 13° 3 wood, but i never forget this driver. I would stick the actual model if 8 wouldn't have no driver because i think he looks good! And that is what counts at the end for me....

    I have an ST-Z in my holiday set and love it. Mizuno doesn't market its drivers like TM, Titleist etc and there aren't many around to demo in pro shops etc. I think that's a big part of why they don't sell as well. Also, Mizuno have a shorter shaft as standard than other brands which in some of the reviews online, costs it a bit of distance.

    Here in Australia, Mizuno woods have always been more expensive than any other brands, although this year it's the same price as the Stealth 2 and Paradym as TM and Callaway have raised their prices to match. They are not widely available through the big commercial golf retailers and hence the current model (st230), does not get discounted as often as TM or Callaway counterparts. It may be Mizuno's marketing strategy to be a "premium" brand and to be sold through the pro-shops of private golf clubs.
    However, that said, the previous year's model usually goes on a fire sale of sorts around the December/January timeframe so I'm hoping to pick some up then. Although next year Mizuno is not releasing a new model so this might not happen ...

    Had a GREAT fitting with Alex from Mizuno on Monday, looking forward to receiving the "prescription" and and a shiny new ST-X 230.
    Went into the fitting prioritising forgiveness. I had also strongly suspected that I was compensating horribly for my old Rogue (Project X 5.5) being very wrong for me, after strength gains since my last fitting. Confirmed when my ST-X 220 3W (Ascent 50R) had higher ball speed.
    Without doing much more than relaxing about my swing, I lifted my ball speed from 115mph old to 130mph new. Efficiency 1.47, so 88.5 swing speed. Much straighter, less dispersion too, sending the ball 240y uphill up the range
    Looking for more improvement once used to the new one - and a few startled opponents!

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Před 25 dny

      Don't get me started 😊 I have a similar opinion on things like that and it frustrates me at the best of times. Yes sometimes the media samples given aren't in the best spec possible for the individual reviewer and yes the manufacturers could do better in ensuring the equipment is fitted for the reviewer. But there is far too much subjective negativity when really with regards to the Max it has the same shaft adapter as all other Mizuno drivers so it's easy to grab one that does work from the Z or X and use that instead. Using a slightly shorter shaft may not showcase the relevant gain but using a shaft way too long and therefore hitting it poorly will have greater effect on the ball than the small extra club head speed gained from the additional length....
      It's crazy 🤦👍🏻

    Indirectly related, you mentioned the restriction on ball speeds off the club face by the USGA and R&A. However, how can this restriction be effective if there is no corresponding restriction on ball distance technology?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Před rokem

      Hi there, the balls are regulated and quite stringently so there is a limit to what they can truly do but have managed to move the needle over the years. Still the largest gain is due to the modern golfer being more physically able to produce more club head speed.

Basically to ensure any bias I have is neutralised (everyone has their own preference for what brand they either play, choose to wear etc) I always give detailed head data so that all conclusions regardless of which in a compare wins so to speak, is done by open and honest head data. Any and all performance differences can be seen by doing it this way. Sometimes long winded yes but ensures clarity. Yes I have my preference for clothing etc, I've played Mizuno irons for as long as I can really remember and I like their apparel but it doesn't effect in any way how the launch monitor basically determines are winner or not. If you wanltch any of the content I have done with the i230 irons you'll see just how much I like them and I honestly think that they are the best overall iron that Ping have ever created.
