I backed the kickstarter and received the book and beginner rpg box set. I think this is a good idea that needed more time to develop and refine.
Book - The lore is cool and there’s some gorgeous artwork. I wish some effort was made to talk about using it with core 5e. I can easily see people being confused picking up this book and how to use it. The big draw is the playable animal species which feels like the most developed mechanical section. The class section gives some new ideas for subclasses but the Rogue and Wizard drew the short straw with basically nothing new. Which feels like an odd choice considering the Rogue is a featured pre gen. Maybe this was cut content.
Beginner Box - This feels like the biggest disappointment. The look of it is fantastic but is ultimately lacking. They take the adventure from the book and simplify it to hold your hand through. I think this is a great idea for a new GM but there’s nothing to do when the adventure is done. A new GM isn’t going to just jump into the Furhaven book and know what to do because it expects you to know 5e already. You can’t take the monsters from the book and use them in the box game without a lot of work which a new GM will struggle with.
A lot is vague. It mentions weapons having base damage but I don’t see any mention of what or where that is. All of the pre gen character cards list a class ability but with the exception of a couple there’s no explanation anywhere in the box about what it does. Bubble Wand sounds fun. I wish I knew what it did. Even the section of the booklet talking about the character card ignores talking about the class ability which reinforces the feeling this was rushed through development. I really like the idea of the action cards for new players. However some issues pop up here too. The cards are simplified versions of 5e spells and actions. Its only meant for this game in the box they are presenting. Which would be fine but the rushed feeling returns because Mage Armor almost reads exactly like the 5e spell and talks about AC which this box game doesn’t use.
Overall - There’s good stuff here. The artwork and idea of playing as cute animals will lure people in. It just feels like some more time was needed to flesh things out and do some QC. Maybe that could be addressed in a second printing.

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback. Mine just arrived and is still in the box until I have time to sit down and go through it thoroughly. I'm sure Kim and the audience appreciate you taking time to share your thoughts. :)
