The Owner of a swank beauty salon must contend with a dull fiance, a romantic stranger, the jealous blond who loves him, and the lecherous husband of a client. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
For those who think that $150.00 to lose all your fat in 1938 was a bargain, then that $150.00 back then is equal to $2751.00 today. IN 1938, gas was 10 cents per gallon. A loaf of bread was 9 cents. You could rent a house for $27.00 per month. 13 cents bought a pound of hamburger. Average cost of a new house was $3,900.00. A ticket to see the above move was 25 cents.
Fantastically true but weren't the income levels comensurately lower than we are used to as well?
I always figure the bite of cost felt the same. Folks probably bought the 9 cent loaf of bread with the same ratio of expense as we'd spend.
I was making $4.25 pr hr tips in 1990. See below & 1938 NY was equal to $5.41. How cheaply goods could be made, differed diff times in history w war and labor sources etc. Depression etc. So it's not evenly moving through history.
But the 1% were always 1% just more of them now.
The federal minimum wage in the United States was established at 25 cents per hour in 1938 by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 25, 1938. The law applied to employees involved in interstate commerce or producing goods for interstate commerce. The FLSA's purpose was to improve labor standards and eliminate working conditions that were detrimental to workers' health, efficiency, and well-being. Adjusted for inflation, the 1938 minimum wage is equivalent to $5.41 in 2023.
Heart breaking scene of Mrs. Horton ruminating over the gossip.
Threatens to back hand her if she doesn't go out with him. Fun times.
What a sweet story. Wonderful acting! I love the '30's films. Great clothes, cars, furniture, etc. Thanks for this one! 🌈🌈🌈
Thanks for watching PizzaFLIX. May the Sauce be with you!
I loved her apartment..& evening gown....
I think that bell hop ? who was being bribed with $5 for 5 min (@ 45 min) was the guy who played Jed Clampet on the Beverly Hillbillies tv show. Never go out with a man who stalks you and raises his hand to 'box you on your pretty little ears' if you don't go out with him. What a contrast to that deadpan Dr. - Talk about ricochet whiplash. She needed to find new pastures!
What a Gutsy Woman back Then!! Ms.Ames was Quite Good in her role! Very attractive looking person!! Story was good& I don't know How anyone could tolerate"gossipy, rumor mongering" people like those customers!! Thanks,PizzaFlix4 Sharing this movie!!
Sort of a proto-"The Women," the film version of which came out the following year. That's a great film, but this one can hold its own.
Craig Reynolds died at age of 42 , On motor scooter accident. Adrienne Ames died age 39 of cancer.
wow, how awful
What a bunch of rude people. Nearly every one of them.
Mazie the fireball partner, played by Pert Kelton, who also played Ralph Krandon's wife Alice, on the Honeymooners. An early glamor shot of Adrienne Ames has been the desktop wallpaper on my PC for a long time. Gorgeous!
Audrey Meadows was Alice
@@mandolndoc Pert Kelton preceded Audrey in the early per-series days . (according to web sources) ❤
Ames was such a beautiful woman...died way to young....
Love the classics!
Didn't expect to like this-but truly did! Thank you
1 date and they get married!? Watching them kiss in these old movies looks like it would hurt !! Lmaoooo
I know right? Also, Pat Fenton's a stalker. Can't stand his character.
My Grandparents knew ea other 2 mo s were married 40 yrs
@@hazelchief-rabbit5903 not stalker dumbo a persistent Man..it's girls like you that have almost ruined it for a real man to go after " what He wants ...what do want a MAN. Or Casper milk toast" ?...This Man loved her!! A stalker didn't love you ...& Doesn't have your best interest at heart! BIG DIFFERENCE
Least you KNEW you were kissed nowadays most men don't know how to act..afraid some woman will scream harassment ...you've ruined IT FOR THE REST OF US...........but I'm not giving up hope ) there's STILL MEN OUT there 🙏
Liked the gal who picked up the lady that needs a shower!.....lol
1930's These ladies were quite feisty 💓 it😄
Great film.....no tattoos and no smart phones at all!
Of course not
Of course not. They were on the brink of starvation, unemployed, & about to enter WWII😕 didn't have time for much else
@@msbrowngault just like any other decade they just coped with it just like were doing during covid virus
The tattoos???????
@@user-zx5kq6hs9d Before approximately 1990, tattoos on American women were extremely rare, except for certain small groups of the underclass (such as biker gang "mamas"). Tattoos require the injection of poison under the skin, and some of the injected foreign material (including particles of metal) ends up in the lymph glands. Tattoos are a small but important part of the Postmodernist movement to convert American women into a Third World style.
This is all part of the Attack on the West.
Silly me; I thought the lead was Loretta Young!
She does have a lot in common with Miss Young; Ann Dvorak as well.
Yes, she definitely resembles Loretta!
"She eats like a bird. A peck at a time." 😄😆
Loved this and especially Adrienne Ames! I wasn't familiar with her yet, so will be looking for her other films. Fun to see a madcap film that also has some drama.
Can't believe being a ole movie buff never heard of AA .such a beautiful actress you can imagine my astoundedness when looking her up found out she was from my beloved home town of Fort Worth , TEXAS 🇨🇱 ( so was classic movie actress Martha Hyer) she passed away only 39; was married at 13/14 yrs of age !! AND IS buried Were my precious Aunt Pat was buried...
@@karenhill3970 AA was married at sixteen. Lol
Beautiful clothes on Helene!
Great movie! Thank you. Great movie. Got another like this?
He has lots! 💕
Only 10 mins in & this film is delightful!
"We use an electrical cabinet to open your pores. Then we put you upon a table where we manipulate the fat, first applying a strong solution; so that when the fat cells break down under treatment, the astringent tightens the skin, preventing flabbiness. Then you should have face, neck and skin treatments to restore youthful contours. Only a hundred fifty dollars, in advance." Poshly solemn quackery.
Instablaster.
Oh well.....poo ..what do ya think these nail salons are these days ...poo..this is just a movie
Enjoyable movie, especially the monkey's antics. Thank you and for the laughter.
Great B movie- good acting, plot and beautiful clothes. Unexpected gem. Thanks PizzaFlix! ❤️❤️🙏😍
Great film and storyline...Delightful💯✔
for a B movie this had a decent script, fun plot and good acting. thanks for the flix!
Agreed!! :)
Give me an A-list, please. I'll go straight to those movies first!
This woman is absolutely beatiful wow 😍
Loved It !
Absolute gem. Thanks
"Why not marry me and let me worry about the money" ? Those must have been the days.
I want a man to say that to me. I'm sick of being a strong independent women, no but seriously...
What a great line!!!! I hope to hear it from a gentleman soon...
Lol.
lol, exactly. Men these days want you to open your legs and pay for everything. hahha ;-)
@Nancy Hollo u must be a millennial because the media has done nothing but show u that women were all so oppressed and beaten by their husbands. This is part of the myth that all of American life before 1970 was racism and u equality to women. I dont see strong independent women today I see women who are miserable and have very little self respect. I actually can remember both my grandmothers and great aunts were treated not worse but better by men. If u were not a college bound upper middle class white woman and have to clean toilets for a living so called equality isnt really a great life. I would rather raise my own kids than send them to a shitty day care and be a single mom because we let men go from their responsibilities in the name of independence or because of a career. If I wanted a family and had the means to not work would it not be the least bit selfish not to put my childrens needs over my own wants and desire for a career. That is how women like my grandmother thought .they also had honorable men in their lives .im sure a lot more women get beaten these days then in the 50s . im so sick of that stereotype.
Well, I lasted through 20 minutes of this cr-p. Must be worth a medal.
Fun fact Pert Kelton was 1st Alice on the Honeymooners and got caught up in McCarthy blacklist ..shes the one taking the $150.00 check. Her voice is unmistakable and was a very different Alice.
THE WAY PAT TREATS PEOPLE IS REALLY TERRIBLE. WHY HELENE WOULD WANT TO MARRY THIS GUY IS BEYOND ME. YES, HANDSOME AGGRESSIVE TOUGH, THE POOR DOCTOR HAS NONE OF THESE QUALITIES AND IS RATHER A MILK TOAST. MIX THOSE TWO CHARACTERS INTO ONE AND WE'D HAVE SOMETHING, BUT OF COURSE, NO STORY.THIS MOVIE IS ANYTHING BUT SWEET, IF ANYTHING IT'S JUST THE OPPOSITE.
MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IS MAZLE, HELENE'S PARTNER, TOUGH, LOYAL, AND HONEST. HELENE/ADRIANNE AMES IS BEAUTIFUL, IN FRONTAL VIEW SHE LOOKES ,WELL, LIKE HER BEAUTIFUL SELF, BUT IN PROFILE SHE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE LORETTA YOUNG, IT'S JUST AMAZING. I THANK PizzaFlix FOR PRESENTING THIS, SO WE CAN FURTHER EXPLORE OUR OWN SENSE OF COMPASSIONS. PLEASE DON'T BE OFFENDED I TYPE IN CAPS. I MEAN NO OFFENCE, IT'S JUST THE WAY I DO THINGS.
I like to also, but my daughter says it's shouting in text. Lol
@@sharonspencer2312 Dear S.S. Yes, this has been pointed out to me several times consequently I don't type in all caps any longer. I don't carry a cell phone and I simply didn't know I was shouting. Shouting in print is a mystifying concept to me. I might add the responses to my all caps writing have all been warm explanatory ones. Thanks,T.G.
A great film and a great ending enjoyed it very much
To my dearest Aza Baizura, I really hope I was strong enough & well enough to have the courage to spend some time knowing you back then. My regret, you're truly a gem.
Awesome! Loved it
A 👍 clear print 😉
A delightful comedy romance :)
Fab wardrobe! Beautiful Lady. In & out.
Sort of a cut-rate “The Women”. Enjoyable enough.
When people had Class, Grace, and such beauty. WIsh people were like this today such elegance as been lost forever. What a gem. Lovely too have found it. Xxxx
Thanks for watching! May the Sauce be with you.
catherone, Maybe, just maybe, you hang out with the "wrong" people.........There are, indeed, people with elegance, grace and even LOVING MORALITY in today's world - my Mother is a such a person. I hope you live a life to meet such people - cheers
@@dr.elizabethmartin7118 lol, that was catty af! Me-ow! I bet you think you're a better class of person...😂
@@dr.elizabethmartin7118 and her name is Catherine, miss pee-atch-dee! 😂
@@miapdx503 I personally didn't find it catty; I think it's giving hope that all is not lost, and I happen to agree. But I can also understand how some people get discouraged when they look around and see all the negative things. So let's encourage each other, I say!
If a man threatened to back hand me to go out with him id have gone to change and returned with a knife instead of dancing w him lol
Just be sure to aim the knife for the right spot. I can think of a number of men who deserve exactly that response. I would start with a certain orange-tinted fascist p.o.s. who shall go unnamed.
I've seen a few of these old movies where the men threaten the women with a spanking! Oh have times changed.
amen
Well bless your pea picken heart
He was teasing!!
I'd do anything for that woman's confidence (and having gams like that wouldn't hurt either).
whats gams
Morningstar, they are stems, trotters, lower limbs, or as some say, legs. lol. ;-)
@@Morningstar-xz5bl Relatives of the actress Rita Gam (b. 1927 - d. 2016).
This movie was good & funny too!!
Great movie...thanks👍
i think Adrienne Ames favors Joan Collins .
Nice movie. Thank you
Cute movie!
Thank you I liked this movie better than the everyday soap operas,,,by the way the kiss in the end would not keep me around for a lifetime 😂😂😆😇🍕🍕Flix
How's this for irony: Adrienne Ames wrote off more than $9000 in wardrobe and jewelry on her 1934 tax form, which she claimed was necessary for "professional reasons" (as was her maid). She claimed that her "daily expenses" included flowers, massages, taxis and beauty work. Ames died of cancer on May 31, 1947, in New York City, aged 39.
So happy they got married. 😍😍😍
Awesome movie!!!
Typical, tell a person to change their bodies instead of teaching or dealing with the immoral spouse! Now with that being said lol, i still enjoy these great old films you post instead of "todays" movies.
Handy having poison lying around.
"The Women" came out in 1939... "Slander House" came out in 1938... interesting!
These insufferable male characters who seem to think only their own feelings matter really irritate me! I know it's a trope of the time, but women who can't shake the unwanted narcissist off must feel like they're being stalked - which they are. I was hoping the film would end with him finally meeting a suitable end.
Pretty good 👍
at 25:10, He hits him with his right, striking the left side of the victim's face, but the victim puts his hand to the right side of his face.
Ha, I noticed that too! 😆
@@hazelchief-rabbit5903 That's because it's a movie. You'll also notice that throughout this entire movie no one had to go to the rest room.
I did not like those horrible women with their evil gossiping and judgment, which is distasteful in any decade. This is the lowest level that women can descend to. The star Adrienne Ames is a very beautiful woman, and she played the role of an honest and kind woman, finally realizing that she was perfect in the role she was born into, and accepting that she would never be accepted by those snotty blue-bloods.
Cute as hell
Ah if only a satin gown could solve all a woman's problems.
It doesn't solve problems but it puts a smile on your face...😏
City vs. Country values in the 1930's. Societal elites destroying lives for entertainment.
Good film!☆☆☆
Helene reminds me of young Joan Crawford
Is the name of this movie actually "SCANDAL HOUSE", which is repeated several times in the first moments of this film? Just wondering.........I've noticed many false names lately - I suppose to avoid copyrights, whatever - but these are very old films......
I wonder what First Wave Feminists thought about this film.
If you are ever in FORT WORTH, TEXAS. ..try to see this beautiful old cemetery. Ms Adienne Ames ..among many other famous ( around Texas) people buried there it's a historical cemetery dating to 1879..,Ft Worth is lovely ,hilly..Grand Ave is in the Northside " of Ft Worth very old...over looks Trinity River
She was hardly a household name.
🌹
" carve figures out of fat" Then and now !!
150 to get rid of all your fat! I am in!
Comments Look
The maid - there you go. Not working, maid doing your cooking and cleaning. No wonder these gals are in sad shape.
Why dont they show the WHOLE STORY?
$150 then to now? Around $3000 now, but remember to add on another $1000 because... Well, because everyone's doing it here.
Has nothing to do with greed. 🙄
Oh ..they said it the movie .ii see now ......🦋
🍕
Should I change it ?
Some of those women are just thick, not fat🤨 some men like a lil meat on their bones
Not very nice description of ladies in Salon Pizza Fix....🦋
This guy is obnoxious.
I must be really bored to be watching this silly move. halfway thru
