It's the post-apocalypse, pregnant women would be protected and under constant surveillance to ensure their survival and that of the baby.

They were doing a standard base transfer - Mel was a medic, not a fighter. She was going to be treating wounded at the other base and was not meant to be in the line of action. Their group was unexpectedly ambushed in what was considered their own territory.

Welp since a year passed and the guy I made a comment about dipped, I will just simply rewrite my comment. The entire story's writing is the worst I've ever witnessed. This atrocity is a clusterfuck of its own. Joel's death was terribly handled and how he fell for Abby's trap and told their names to them was very out of character. The cycle of "revenge bad, kill all, not killing bad one in the first place, whoopsies, cry" is the most braindead crap ever. A dozen videos are proving how horrendous the story is from a writer's perspective and every stupid decision so just simply watch those and argue there. Now keep crying bozos and tell me how the story is a masterpiece, I'll wait.💀

Joel did the selfish thing, that's unarguable, but it IS a selfish world. There wasn't a guarantee there would be a cure. He probably knew that even if the infection is no more, people will still kill each other for things like supplies and basically supremacy. That's just the new normal, because this infection actually gives these bad people freedom to do whatever they want.

I hate Nora the most. Abby atleast had a good reason to kill Joel and her story atleast made her a decent character and quite human. Nora just insulted Joel for sadistic pleasure and ran away. They should have shown Ellie trashing her with that rod more.

Why they didn't make a prequel in which Tess is the main protagonist to explain the time when she met Joel to the time they became an inseperable couple to the time she and Joel met Ellie and lastly was her sacrifice to buy time for Joel and Ellie. That would be a much better and more emotional story than the story of some random character named Abby.
Exactly some people actually for some reason likes abby even tho her character development was poorly done besides the parts where the game manipulates u into thinking abby is by having her help dog and kids when you play as her and when youre ellie it's the complete opposite ,its a revenge story but only it wasn't even done right.

What I hate about this game is that it tries to make you feel sorry for Abby and the others but the fact is THEY DON'T MATTER.

@@red_guy123 i didnt initially, but when i played it thoroughly, i noticed that this game COULD have been one of the goats with the exact same story, you just weak the placement. Abby *IS* a better character than ellie. The analysis has Abby's character shows that killing Joel was her "horrible villain" act, but Joel deserved it. Where the writers were wrong was making joel and tommy so trusting of that group. So Abby is a character set on revenge, then goes back to her life, and hates Scars, but then ends up helping scars and turning on her WLF, so her character is better. Ellie? They went OUT of their way to make you hate Ellie. She isnt the cute tween she was in the first making dad jokes, she is a stereotypical, bitter, angry lesbian. She is pissed off at the world, like most lesbians, confrontational, like most lesbians, in your face and a permanent chip on her shoulder, like most lesbians. She loses everything she has/had on this revenge ride, she kills dogs, she kills people with nothing to do with this, she has a body count in the 100s but cant kill abby. This game was GREAT from a gameplay angle, a visual angle, but the narrative was GODAWFUL

The chase sequence with nora was one of my favorite parts of the game. Along with the bridge scene wirh abby, the rat king. The scene where ellie and jesse escape in that truck was so fucking cool.

I think I sorta understand Abby's motivation now, although I still hate her as a character. Her rage led her to kill Joel, but it also indirectly cost all of her friends their lives. Good enough story overall for a standalone game, but it was a major mistake for a sequel, killing off a beloved character right off the bat, whom people had expected and were excited to play with. This plot doesn't work as a sequel. It hurts the continuity and consistency.
Joel is not a beloved character, winnie-the-pooh is, Joel is a psychotic person who just didn't wanna lose another daughter

It's like saying "oh he did nothing wrong" when the final act of the first game is supposed to be sad, since he let the world stay the same instead of saving it. When she's legit jumping with abby and hits her belly a lot, how the fuck did she not miscarriage when most minor labor and stress can make you lose a baby? Fucking "realistic"game acting like baby bellies made of stone.
Honestly, idk how to feel about the characters. Ellie WANTED her life to mean something, Joel took it away, for selfish reasons, and killing fireflies, and the only doctor that could make a vaccine. But Abby didn't understand the situation (well, didn't know) and took the time to find Joel and torture him to death. Ellie kills pretty much all her friends, but let's Abby go. Abby only has Lev now. And Ellie doesn't have anyone. I want to hate Abby, but she had a reason. Hell, Ellie did the same thing Abby did. Revenge. (Didn't really get it, but still). It's so hard to just, feel like one of the characters are better than the other. I do feel like this should have been written completely differently.
If it makes you feel any better Ellie still has Dina, at the end in California Ellie isn't wearing Dina's bracelet but when she gets back to Wyoming you can notice it on her wrist again
And to be honest Ellie can still have Tommy in her life too they can repair their relationship

I never understood why Ellie just goes straight to Mel's body after Owen tells her "She's..." to check and discovers she's pregnant, she had no reason to go "No, no, no" and see her.
There is literally nothing that could tell her that she's pregnant, she could have just ignored her corpse an keep going, also managing to don't forget the map.

The main problem I have with the ending of this game is that I feel it's not realistic at all, I don't think I've talked about it with a single person that didn't agree they would kill her, especially after already killing so much people, in an apocalyptic environment.

I couldnt believe they made me fight ellie, i let abby get shotgunned to the face many times in that lvl.

@@attackmaster519 in Abby's case, it was retaliation for Joe killing her dad. As you play the game as her, you'll notice she's not an evil golf club-wielding murderer but a daughter who was robbed of a dad. Rape is not a good comparison in this case.

Man ya know the ending to this game takes me back to Metal gear rising revengeance the final boss, the boss theme explains how they aren’t different in too many ways, they both lost everything, and so many have perished for nothing.
