- Chicago’s rat problem is nothing new. The city has long been dubbed one of America’s “rattiest” cities. In 2022, Orkin named Chicago the rat capital of the U.S. for the eighth consecutive year.

I used to work at a state prison. We had at least 10 cats the inmates would feed. I know it sounds weird for a state prison to have stray cats, but they also were mouse and rat exterminators. Rats and mice are allergic to mint. Spreading mint oil will repel the rats, and make your yard smell good. Also, New York has a dog program that goes out of a night, hunt and kill rats. Lastly, there are small game traps that Chicagoans can buy at farm supply stores that will live-catch the rats, then they can be taken and disposed of.
Put some rat traps around City Hall, I think they are coming from there :(
Saw the one run past me and some other woman on Broadway just across from Mariano’s. Her eyes (the woman, not the rat’s) eyes got so wide 😂. Imagine all of them running around all your produce, meat and groceries in the warehouses of these restaurants and grocery chains.
If it's not a not a rat or mouse, it's a squirrel, possum, or some type of rodent. I've seen how the grocery store I work at just leave food everywhere without zero fks and I'm in the suburbs. Can't imagine the filth the city has to offer.

On a DIY note a 50/50 mixture of corn meal, potato flakes, flour, oatmeal, etc. with baking soda will abate you problem.
Baking soda and corn meal alone, does the trick.
Any rats that I used to have, are now only in the neighbors' yards, that have not tried this.
They are smart and will find an "easier" place to find food, so they stopped coming to our properties.
Perhaps I was not clear. Pick any one of the food/ grain items and mix with the baking soda. @@thefucrew9865

Rats go where the food is. I have young and middle aged neighbors who love to entertain outdoors for as long as Chicago weather permits and there's always food dropped by guests. And, people don't clean up after themselves either once the party ends. Leaving bread for squirrels and birdseed in winter winds up feeding rodents too. The problem cannot be entirely blamed on restaurants and dog waste, as some of my neighbors insist it is.
Let's not demonize the rats.

The biggest rats are in city hall.
My neighbor tried to start a vegetable garden in their backyard and there was an explosion of rat population living off all his tomatoes. I had a conversation with the garbage men one day and they said they hate when people try to start gardens, they always bring tons of rats.
I thought Chicago had a cat brigade that took care of rats.
Well if you can find a plan to get rid of the four-legged rats at the same time find one to get rid of the 2-legged ones too. That would be a whole infestation of rodents Chicago won't have to worry about.

The neighbors should buy another garbage can for the excess garbage across the street. Then ask reimbursement because the garbage is overflowing.
They use hawks at the airports and parks, but they are missing out on one of the best tools ever against fighting rats 🐀 grain stores and others use Ferrets or minx. They are rat killing machines that can get pretty much anywhere a rat can get. They use trained ones on farms ect. Least a few times a year to protect stock feed and control Disease outbreaks. Release a large enough breeding population and until the rats are pretty much wiped out they will also breed like machines. I rather have some cute little ferret running over my feet then some Diseased filled rat.

Nope we will use the prisoner's to breed train and house them and work with new handlers to run them day to day. Seen prisons all over allowing prisoner's to take care of shelter dogs or work with emotional support dogs, ect. Would be good for them teach them some responsibilities and routine, and for the city's rat 🐀 problem. 🤪 🔨

We got a rat infustation in our yard. Now the past couple of years we've had coyotes dig their burrow in our yard where the rat holes used to be.
I'm not sure what to do about it, but it has significantly reduced the amount of rat hole we use to find.

Car anti freeze, dry ice. Put dry ice inside the holes, mix corn muffin mix with baking soda. Cats, you must poison and try to block them.
Anti-freeze is poisonous to dogs...and you can be arrested and charged for that.
