My wife and I have 2 cats, we once lived in a house near an open field, one day it rained and flooded, apparently the field spiders found their way inside through a small gap in the screen door. We woke up in the morning to find hundreds of dead spiders all over the hardwood. They actually stayed up all night killing spiders. They got lots of treats that day.

At my house we had a rat and mouse problem since our house was right next to the jungle. I got tired of setting up traps and calling the exterminator, both of which did nothing to solve the problem. Then the dad finally caved in and agreed to get a cat. Never heard a rat squeaking in between walls or in our kitchen again. Plus its welcome to have a new addition to the family,

I am inspired. It is good to see people that understand and appreciate a cat's value. I am a cat rescuer, been doing it now for 15 years, and I have always loved these awesome gifts of nature. It is so marvelous to hear that there are not only people but entire towns that are starting to understand that having a cat around isn't a bad thing but a great one. the TNR program is one of the best groups to ever be put into place for these outdoor felines. It's horrible to trap them, throw them in a shelter and put them down bc they had the misfortune of being unwanted and underappreciated. I love each and every one of mine and I haven't seen a rat or mouse in yrs. I have them indoors and outdoors and my house is pest free. I don't like the thought of anything being killed, it is a heartless thing, but it is nature's way, so why not have nature work for your own benefit. If that is what it takes for people to realize that cats are invaluable, then I'll take it. The ancients knew it and so should we. Anything in order to bring awareness to folks and get them to stop killing, torturing and abandoning cats/kittens. Thank you, Tree House Humane Society in collaboration w the fine people in Chicago!! Love and admiration from High Point, NC USA.

I adopted a very sick gnarly 'ole tom. I had him desexed and gave him a little holiday at the vet for awhile until he got a bit better. In the next year I nursed him back to health. He was a very sick cat yet still but managed to live another 7 full years.
Here's the thing, he was a rat's worst nightmare. He would absolutely torture them for fun until they screamed - if you've ever heard a rat scream you'll know what I'm talking about, then with it screaming he would walk around with it holding it by the neck.
I can tell you it emboldened other cats, perhaps showing them 'this is what you do with rats.'
Rat problem stopped very soon. How he learnt this behavior only god knows. Over the years he did this many times.
I could tell he liked it - he felt like an alpha cat even though his alpha day were long gone. He would prance around swiping other cats and dogs for a few days afterwards.

If you were to simply watch the video, you would know that the mere presence of a cat would frequently be enough to drive rats and mice away and into another area to settle. Furthermore, while cats may not want anything to do with mice or rats due to a disinterest, that does not mean that they do not have the dexterity of capturing said rodents. Cats have insanely fast reflexes that are several times faster than those of humans that could even give dogs a run for their money. They are also natural hunters as many of their primal instincts are still ingrained within their minds from their relatives in the big cat family. Moreover, while terriers are frequently used in mousing and rat capturing, the manner in which you have stated your argument claims that only dogs are utilized in the sport which is most definitely not the case as numerous farms and homes use cats instead of dogs.

@@KomicalFox This is a highly debated topic because in contrary to dogs cats have not changed their behavioural model (dogs did, completely). Yes, city cats tend to skip the hunt to either dwell on the dumpsters or beg humans for food, but this is nothing but a display of intellect. On the other hand, anyone who's been around cats for long enough would confirm that cats are very social and emotionally attached to their "colony", humans and other animals (dogs included) in the house. With humans, it is very typical for the cat to select one person to be most attached to, usually, it is the "food provider", seemingly because such "food provider" is associated with a mother, but it is also usual for cats to select a random person, especially in the large families. This type of relations cannot be described with a word better than "love".
The most anecdotal case I've seen by myself has in the family that had been keeping both dogs and cats for generations and when I've met them they had a young cat that has been brought up by a german shepherd, but that doggy has been brought up by two cats that were already dead, and those two cats were brought up by a mongrel dog. Great idea! We have a cat and our house is a mini victorian with a rock, dirt mortar foundation. You'd think we'd have a ton of mice but the mere presence of the cat has kept them out. In our old place before without a cat, we'd have a mouse in at least once every two months, it was a real pain. Our kitty's not even what you'd call a hunter, but her presence has kept them out of our current place.

Cat food costed way less than all the traps I was buying. 😊

I rescued my cat from a rubbish bin unfortunately, his siblings had died, someone had thrown the litter of new born kittens out in a huge rubbish bin at work so it was really sad.
I feed my kitten and he grew to a strong, loving, smart, caring cat. I named him Herbie. I had a beautiful dog, cat and three babies. My husband and I worked hard to feed my family their favourite foods. One day, I said to Herbie, Herbie, sorry darling but I can’t afford to feed us tonight, I was joking with him he,he,he, I said to him sorry mate can’t afford any shopping! Anyway, one hour went past Herbie, went outside and came back with a huge frickin rat!! And put it at my feet!
Omg! Wtf Herbie! But that’s his way of helping our-family, how awesome was that! I gave him his favourite dinner that night and said to him don’t worry Herbie, you don’t need to bring me a rat, we are okay!

Most cats think rats are gross. Non feral outdoor cats really are much cleaner than rats. Cats love to hunt so they really deter rats. I heard rats scratching in my walls. I got an indoor cat who is a good hunter. She doesn’t like to be outside but I take her on a walk around my property once a week and the scratching noise stopped within a few weeks. My area has lots of farms where the farmers can apply to even get feral cats placed with them for free to keep the rat population down. Our main crops here are lemons, avocados, berries( mostly strawberries) and oranges. Rats love those crops. Having the free roaming cats preserves the crops a lot better and cats are cleaner than rats in their potty habits so you won’t walk through a pile of cat excrement but without the cats, the rat excrement that carries lots of disease is everywhere

There is quite the damn difference between looking for an animal to torture and cats being the most common animal fo find free roaming in a neighborhood and just saying cats are annoying and not the kind of pet you would like or animal you have any chemistry with.

I can attest to the effectiveness of feral cats in keeping down the rodent population. Where I live in Florida we have a huge rodent problem. But in my specific neighborhood we have 20-30 feral cats that patrol and we all contribute to providing them with plenty of food. We take turns taking them to the vet for annual check-ups. Several of us have constructed rain shelters for them. About half of them are friendly enough we can approach and often pet them but they are free to roam or as we say patrol the neighborhood. I can report that nobody in our neighborhood has seen any sign of any rodents in over two years. Half a mile down the road where the neighbors are constantly rounding up their feral cats to take them to the city pound to be put to sleep, they also have a huge rodent problem and they have meetings on how to curb the rodent problem and they pay tens of thousands of dollars for exterminators. If people would just let the cats be or as we do, make a cat friendly neighborhood, the rodent problem would go away.

Y'know, people don't realize just how OP cats are when it comes to all the little things they hunt. Cats are faster, stronger, and more agile; with lighting reflexes, sharp teeth, and claws. It's not even a fair fight.

My cats are good mousers ( catching them, bringing them in for me and then I have to chase them around....soft mouths), but afraid of chipmunks and the squirrels just laugh at them..pay no attention to them at all. Lately one of keeps bringing me live frogs.

@@CarriUSAIf your cats aren't hunting them, then it's the cats who have decided they're not worth the effort. Those squirrels and chipmunks aren't laughing--they're breathing a sigh of relief. :) Most pet kitties are well feed; plus, there are usually plenty of easier targets to get that hunting fix that all cats need. But cats can definitely catch squirrels and chipmunks; albeit, they are much more challenging prey.

@@CarriUSA Is "soft mouth" an expression? Because honestly that sentence sounds super creepy to a non-American, like you're kissing (or something else...) the soft mouths of the mouses.

My cat very rarely ate from her food bowl for the first 10 years of her life. She preferred mice from the compost and frogs from the pond. She's a 17 year old indoor cat now and quite spoiled
