Exploring New York's Rattiest Park with a Rodentologist

  • Since the first European colonists set foot in Manhattan in the 1600s, New York City has been losing the war on rats. A recent estimate put the number of rats at around 2 million, about a quarter of the city’s human population, and any efforts to prune that population down have seen limited success.
Rats continue to infest basements, parks, and apartment buildings, chewing through car wiring and the city’s underground communications, and although reports of rats starting a new plague epidemic may be exaggerated, they do undermine quality of life and cause a lot of costly damage.
But now, an aggressive commitment to rounding up these highly unpopular rodents is finally showing real results thanks to a new strategy dedicated to getting inside the rats’ heads-finding their burrows and targeting them in their nests.
In this episode of Transmissions, Motherboard meets up with Matthew Frye, an urban entomologist at Cornell University’s integrated pest management program.
He’s going to show us how we can use learn from animal behavior to hunt rats.

because once you leave NY you notice all buildings have those black boxes outside and around the perimeter.
If you place the food/bait outside, no need for them to come inside and they take the poison back to the nest.

I often look at humanity with the same attitude of watching a serious comedy... fucking hilarious bunch :'3

It's futile, anyway. Rats can fit into any space and swim for 2 miles nonstop.
The worst thing isn't the rats.
The worst thing is that we pump anti-biotics through people and therefore the sewer system when they shit.
The next plague is going to be IMMUNE TO MOST OR ALL CURRENT ANTI-BIOTICS.
And that's not the rat's fault. It's ours.

When I saw the title of this video, I knew the park they were talking about. I Spent many late nights in that park sitting on the benches. The largest rats I've seen in my life. I actually did not see any of the larger rats in this news story. Those all looked like average size NYC rats. In all the times I was in that park, not one of those rats ever tried to attack me, or do anything to me. I remember being in that park with a friend at about 2 am a couple times. No other humans in the park. Just us and the rats running in the open across the basketball courts. It's also a park that's more dim than other parks, so that might also lend it self to the larger rat population. The rats in that park have water, LOTS of food, people who for the most part don't mess with them, and fresh air. Those rats are here the same way us humans are here. This is not them on our land. It's both rats and humans living on communal land. As always, this new story has added the squeaking sound effects to the rats. Always seems bad to me when the news does that. Rats usually don't squeak. Even people with pet rats will tell you it's extremely rare. Rats hear one another on sound levels humans can't hear. So those louder sounds they add to movies, are not typical. I'd hope the news quits doing this eventually. Anyway, it was nice to see that park again. If you do not like rats, stay out of that park, and China Town/Financial District of the lower part of Manhattan. One of the reasons those rats do so well, is because there is a such a high concentration of restaurants in that area. In a 2 minute walk around that park, I bet you would find at least 30 restaurants, ice cream places, outdoor fruit stands, fish markets, and grocery stores... if not way more. The rats will still be on Earth after the humans no longer are.

Exactly😂 that’s the problem of highly urbanized commercial areas; where cat’s size is no big deal in comparison to NY Central Park Rats.😂 They are deadly dangerous especially the bubonic plague carrier rodents! Now if they spread such virus then; i guess NY Heallth Department should be alarmed that such infestation should be given serious extermination control to erase the health risk it may cause to humans!

  • @dawidjagusiak
    @dawidjagusiak Před 6 lety +5

Most sensible statement of this presentation: "As long as there will be humans, there will be rats, and after human extinction there still be rats", adding to this argument, human species evolved from a rodent/rat like prehistoric creature living among dinosaurs. We think rats are disgusting and maleficent, yet they are one of very few species (pigeons being another example) that are living in almost perfect harmony with human species. In my opinion they are like a mirror we can look to see ourselves as people, rats are our direct reflection in natural world, whether we like it or not.

Even if you move in a building that has been totally renovated you don't know what is in the walls and stuff, I lived in a great building VERY, VERY clean. Never saw a rat, mouse or bugs in the building, but at night in the spring/summer/fall. I would always take uber or a cab for the fear of seeing them. I am actually one of the few that liked the cold cold winter, because they would not be out on the streets. I can't believe they can't do more in NY, if they can send a man to the moon, they can do more, they just don't really care. And that's why it's usually a good idea not to live so close to parks, restaurants, and in really old buildings that have fallen apart enough for rats to get in. Could probably release an army of ferrets on this suckers. Dogs are good, too, but it's be a bit too conspicuous having a ton of holes dug by dogs.

4:08 Rats cannot clean or groom their fur. As a result their fur gets dirty and greasy very quickly and they can leave "rub marks" when traveling along walls in residences. Their lack of grooming abilities also causes rats to carry parasitic mites and fleas, which can also become a problem in a residence.
