I guess ill tell the short version of this story here. Im a cable guy and got a service call for DW! I showed up to his house and his wife invited me right in. I went back to DWs office and talked with him about his issue etc. I quickly fixed his issue and then came back to tell him what the issue was. We ended up talking racing for a while and how he got started in it, etc.. He then showed me his personal car collection, one being a ZR1 corvette, which is one of my dream cars! He was actually going to take me for a ride in it, but his wife came out and said they were hungry and wanted to go to lunch :(. I settled for a picture and a autograph though! Very nice down to earth guy! He even gave me a $100 tip! Just wanted to share that story as it was cool to meet a celebrity who wasn't stuck up and took time to converse with a lowly cable guy!

I think from growing up watching him. Dale enjoys talking the stuff more then driving... On top of that he grew up around these guys. and i assume looked up to many of them. and now some like DW look up to him. not with the same aw. but at how dale sr, and Jr helped revoltionize the sport. and how even after racing Dale makes his own way of spreading good will. Ontop of that these guys also like to talk about all these stories. it all goes hand in hand. they are not interviewing Polititians on some agenda. they are just sitting around talking with buddies.

DW probably has no idea how close he came to death one day back in the early 2000's flying into Florence Regional Airport for a race at Darlington. (He was an announcer by then) N500DW (his King Air) came within mere feet of colliding with a helicopter while on final approach to the airport. It was a pilot and air traffic controller screw up that very few people ever knew about. I wont go into details here,... but I'm glad he is still here with us. He is a great story teller.

I still remember screaming at the top of my lungs as Darrell, Richard Petty, and Bobby Allison crossed the finish line almost at the same time. The 88 Gatorade Chevy won (I think it was with the DiGard team) and DW had a fan for life. Many, many more races, wins, and memories followed. Thanks, Darrell. We love ya, brother.

Never was there in person, but watching on TV, Nashville was my favorite track. Never saw a bad race there in any series. The Cup cars quit going there sometime in the 80s, but the BGN cars were there every year for many years after and I always looked forward to that race and the All-American 400, which used to be run just about this time of year (Thanksgiving) after the regular NASCAR season was over. Agree with Dale Jr, they need to bring that back, especially now Nashville is a big sports town with the hockey team and the NFL. If the Predators an be a big attraction in Nashville, which they have become, there's no reason NASCAR can't run a race there again and make a lot of money. It's a major league town, which you wouldn't have said back in the 80's. It was a perfect race track for stock cars.

    Good show.
A good story teller allows the listener to be where the story is being told from. Details, after details, the story becomes a short memory- that the brain compiles together. All of this happens because of the details. Grab a drink and sit and listen. It just might change your life.
Confidence is what DW had for racing. Love is what kept everyone around him.

I became a NASCAR fan in the late 60's. Would only get to see the occasional race on Wide World Of Sport I remember sending away for a NASCAR membership for a couple bucks you got a couple stickers, an official card and some other swag.
I love hearing these stories from DW. Not only for the memories of the racing but for that time period in general. I sure miss the 70's.

I haven't heard his voice since the day he announced his broadcast retirement. Darrell will forever be our jaws of nascar.

What a treasure DW is! I never rooted for Darrell as a driver, but it's hard not to love this guy.

I grew up in the late 80's/early 90's NASCAR era and I always remember DW as this solid race driver who always did the funny/goofy interviews before/after the race. Imagine my shock when my Dad came through and once told that that very same guy used to be one of the most hated drivers in NASCAR. And just for the record: My Dad was a Bobby Allison (later Davey Allison) fan.

I can still remember watching him in his 17 Western Auto car, and sucking soooo bad he couldn't make the show because he had already used up all his provisionals and begging Dale Sr (Dale Sr's words) to drive Steve Park's car. I can still remember when he dumped Davey Allison, nearly killing him and everyone hating him for years.

This is why I've been a DW fan since 1983. I saw him win at Nashville fairgrounds in my 1st cup race. I was 6 years old and been a fan ever since. And nascar does need to come back to Nashville. The superspeedway in Lebanon sucks. There is nothing like a race at the fairgrounds
