But yeah, depending on the opponent, it works to varying degrees. With Levon it threw him off balance so much that he blundered and played a horrible game. Whereas maybe Anish doesn’t get as rattled by Hans’ “strange” play and therefore can evaluate the position for what it actually is (losing for Hans). Seems pretty probable, and him being accused of cheating only amplified it because if they think he’s using an engine then they’re even MORE likely to think his trash moves are actually good lmao.

Something about that when a cheater knows how to play at a high enough level, there is no way of distinguishing cheating from their actual ability. Or something like that, my apologies if I'm misremembering, misrepresenting, and/or conflating. But if we go by that theory, since Hans has cheated in the past, Magnus most likely feels that at this point he cannot trust that Hans may not be cheating. I remember during the Sinquefield Cup, the commentators were discussing this 2900 goal of Magnus. They essentially said "It's within the realm of possibility, but highly unlikely." The reason being that Magnus actually loses rating by merely drawing "lower rated" players in classical, and that in classical tournaments Magnus would _always_ have to win more than he draws to have any positive rating gains. And that's not even mentioning the amount of setback a single loss would bring. I've even read that that it'll take Magnus months, at least, to recover the ratings points from the loss to Hans otb.

    • @applewitheveryone
      @applewitheveryone Před rokem

      @@ghosthunter0950 He does gain more rating points than he loses from a draw, I don't think I ever said otherwise? My point is that simply drawing (the more typical result in classical games) would be detrimental to Magnus. So he always (or to rephrase - "consistently") has to win more than he draws if he wants to progress towards 2900, which is incredibly difficult at the top level. [edit: it's really very nuanced because maybe even a result of 2-wins, 4-draws against another 2800+ would be enough to boost Magnus' rating a bit - not really sure on that; but the main point is that he can't draw significantly more than he wins, which is incredibly difficult and gets progressively more so as he approaches 2900 - not even mentioning losses along the way.] This is in contrast with the first comment I was replying to that was very optimistic about Magnus getting to 2900 "very soon".

For Magnus to come back and perform excellent does help very much clear his position that he did not just randomly lose against Hans, and that it wasn't just as simple as a fluke that we understand. "this rook value... is trash, it doesn't get a number" that got laughing out loud 😂
    so my two cents on the Hans - Magnus thing that doesn't get talked much: Hans gets the benefit to play strange moves because opponents now are hesitant and overthinking if it's a bad move or insane prep. It didn't work with Anish because he's immune to it - he said it himself, "i dont think he cheats because he plays bad against me". So Anish will see a strange move, trust himself, and go "that's not good", and play his best
    The opposite of it happened in Hans - Levon. When Levon said "Hans played strange moves" i honestly don't think he was implying cheating. I think he meant exactly that, just a strange move. G4. Hikaru was looking over it on his stream and he said the same thing, that it was a strange move, and Stockfish didn't even consider it to be a particularly good move. But you always get an insane psychological leverage on your opponents if there's even a sliver of doubt in your opponents mind that you know something they don't
    Same thing in the last tournament vs. AliReza, who said "he sacked the knight and i didn't take it because i didn't know if it was prep" and Stockfish was fine with taking the knight. Say what you want in Hans defense, but from my POV, when you have a history of cheating in the past, it's borderline impossible for it to be a completely fair game...
