  • If you want to immerse yourself in the world of digital painting and graphic design, the paid tools like Illustrator and Photoshop aren’t the only options available.
    We will emphasize this specific point today by looking at 2 popular free and open-source software: GIMP and Krita. Our goal here is to raise your awareness of the differences between these tools and hopefully make it easier for you to pick the one that will suit you best.

    I'm loving Krita for digital drawing. GIMP seems to get the job done but it's clearly focused on the image editing and manipulation. Drawing isn't the main focus.

    None is better. Krita is for drawing/painting and Gimp is a full featured graphics editor. Both can be used for drawing though, but Krita seem to have advanced brushes to simulate real painting tools of all sorts and as I can see on many artworks people are taking advantage of this making the artworks look original. If someone creates all sorts of digital art it's nice to have few different programs that will serve certain purpose. For pixel art theres another program called GrafX2 which resembles Deluxe Paint on the Amiga. Free software for graphics creators, musicians and writers is pretty amazing now.

      Create textures in Krita and edit them in Gimp. Then I can further edit the textures I make in Blender for my 3D models. I wonder if that would be as effective as Photshop (of which I have zero experience in. I just know you can paint and edit in it.)

      From the internet: gimp
      (1) a derrogatory term for someone that is disabled or has a medicial problem that results in physical impairment.
      (2) An insult implying that someone is incompetent, stupid, etc. Can also be used to imply that the person is uncool or can't/won't do what everyone else is doing.
      (3) A sex slave or submissive, usually male, as popularlized by the movie Pulp Fiction.

      The minimun requirement would be 4GB for Krita, although, when i checked on the task manager, it consumes 150Mb of RAM, so trying it on a weaker hardware would help us confirm, although, this can increase depending on how big the drawing is and how much stuff you add into it.
      Meanwhile with GIMP, 512MB of RAM would be the minimun, and the recommended would be 1GB or more.

  • @tulenik71
    @tulenik71 Před 2 lety +8

    I would say precisely the opposite - especially GIMP interface is catastrophic. Although I would agree Adobe interface inherited from Mac world is a bit misleading, too.
    After abandoning "many windows" interface GIMP is a bit better but still much worse than any reasonable alternative.
    For Windows users, Corel is closest to cleanest interface and to what they are used to. That's why I left Inkscape after a years of trying to stick only to it and returned to DRAW! - the work is much faster. The same applies to Photo Paint and Painter. Interface of PaintShop Pro is a bit "popular" but still OK.
    Apart of that, what these open source alternatives are usually missing is strictly defined, well designed, clean architecture. Plugins instaled anywhere and hard to find when you are trying to uninstall/reinstall them, features are added not based on user requests but on individual likings of developers, many missing for years. Well, that can be also a problem with commercial software, but to get sales, they must hear what users want a bit more.
