I love the genuine wonder and curiosity in Chris's eyes. Historic interview.
@Festivus agreed. When Prince gives his explanation of "The Dawn" it seems like Chris' instinctive reaction is to laugh, but then he looks terrified at the thought of laughing at Prince. 😆
It's refreshing. He really cared about the answers - not just running off questions like most interviewers do.
For sure. Chris has mentioned a lot about how big a fan he is of Prince. He’s completely star struck here.
And in fear of Prince's famous sudden exits
@@LindaC616EXACTLY 4:07
You can tell Chris is a real fan and Prince respects his thoughtfulness.
AND ALL OF THOSE SUPERSTARS BELIEVED IN GOD.
A real...FRIEND... 😉🤗🤗
For Chris Rock to get this interview at that time was MAJOR!! REST IN POWER TO THE PURPLE ONE, PRINCE!!!
Keep in mind by ‘97 Chris Rock was HUGE. He was riding high on the “Bring the Pain” special. It got him a book deal, HBO talk show movie opportunities etc. that’s how he got this.
And what a really great interview. One of the most honest I've ever seen.
That is right the Purple 💜 one the amethyst king he said he really A Gemini I think Prince is Aquarius ♒ or Taurus ♉.
Prince is still alive. I saw him. He just couldn't hack the crazy media madness. So he now living low profile shhhhhhh don't tell any1. It's our secret.
@@demisialockett8437 prince was a Gemini ♊️ born June 7 th and Chris rock is an Aquarius ♒️ another air sign
Chris Rock in my opinion did a really good job of interviewing Prince, seemed well prepared and asked a lot of really good questions.
It was because Chris was a really big fan of Prince, and he knew what exaclty to ask, just like a fan interviewing his idol.
Chris Rock conducted the hell out of that interview. He and Prince were both amazing. RIP Prince.
Prince is still alive. He wanted to live low profile away from media harassment. Shhhhhh don't tell any1.

He wasn't a package. A package of what? I hate when people are being called packages. It's a stupid saying. He was a human being. An extraordinary one.

Chris is slaying this interview, really dialed in to Prince. He started of with some sensitive subject matter…androgyny, etc. Prince seems humble and thoughtful, and appears he doesn’t get offended easily
Chris' face the whole time was like "i can't believe I'm interviewing Prince"
There will never be another Artist like Prince
same for every legend.
What about Michael jackson u dummy 0:36
Depends on how specific you are going to get. So its kind of a lame sentiment.
@jeanmiller7177 Jamaican? And you love prince
@@I_Shit_on_your_shit_point
It’s not as lame as your comment. There will never be another artist like Prince because his talent can’t be replicated
You can tell Prince is impressed by Chris' research and knowledge
Wow Prince was almost 40 in this and looked like a teenager he was really beautiful and I miss him so much 🥲
Prince really helped Chris out in this interview and made him look better. That's awesome. It's clear Prince had a lot of respect for Chris and elaborated his answers to help the interview. I remember watching this interview when it was new and I don't remember it being this rough. This is the most down to earth I have ever seen Prince. Really great to see these two showing great respect for one another. That's cool. Also where's the Michael Jackson collaboration question?
This is probably the best interview (most candid?) I've seen from Prince ever.
If it wasn't this interview then I think Prince spoke about the collaboration when he was interviewed by Bill Bellamy.
@@bossteamentertainment6836 I will look for that. 🙏
Right, that's basically what I was alluding to in my comment. I like the way you put. I've still yet to see an interview where there are questions asked about the film "Under the Cherry Moon' and whether he regretted making it etc.
Prince and Michael both love the crap out of comedians especially Prince. Both legends really did favor comedians they loved.
Magical. This is the type of quality content we like to see from the MTV vault. Excellent interview.
So happy to see this interview, Chris Rock did one hell of a job interviewing Prince and prince rarely did an interview and who can blame him, he was selective, he didn’t let just anyone in his circle.
Prince was a rare diamond 💎
@@ASMR-XI-ZUI that’s true
Prince just embodied music. Musical notes were like blood cells to him. Miss him so much.
No one can write music, compose, sing, play guitar, play bass guitar, keyboards, drum, and dance at the level he performs at. Nobody can do all that. True G.O.AT.
Best interview ever.. Chris was thrilled to see Prince. Me tooo.😂
Best ever I agree🙌
Man you can see just how happy Chris is to get to know him like this.
Prince is a class act and carried this interview with Chris Rock. This is a classic moment. Beautiful
💜✨️💜✨️
In such a dignified way, he said Michael wasn’t on his level because he would only compare himself with a composing musician. I have always felt the same in that comparison.
He respect Michael and they were actually friends behind
The scenes so stop trying to make a beef that’s non existent
@@nakitawilliams4259 You didn’t understand my post Nakita. Take care.
@@nakitawilliams4259not really they threw plenty of shots at each other Michael was a entertainer prince was a artist
@@notme1728 mj was an artist too. You just want drama so bad when they were actually friends and had no real beef. The real beef was prince & Rick James not mj & prince. I don’t even think that’s what prince was saying, y’all know prince is a drama queen with a lil ego at times so it’s not suprising he blew it out of proportion. If mj & prince dud throw shots with eachother I doubt it was from a deep hateful place.
MTV edited out some additional comments about Michael from this interview. They also edited out more comments Prince made about the birds and the bees re: Playboy, erotic literature. Seems everyone has their own spin on the past… czcams.com/video/gyNQhz-higo/video.html
Gotta love a Prince interview... He Always Dropped Jewels 🙏RIP to the Legend

NOPE, Prince din't respect MJ, please stop the lies!!!!!!!!!! din't you see the interview? he is basically saying F-you to MJ in a polite way.

This was more than an interview... it was a conversation amongst friends. I feel like Prince was very authentic and open. Much love and honor to these two Legendary Artists ✨️💛✨️
it was what we not call a podcast.
Chris asked some really good questions! Prince rarely gave interviews but I feel he appreciated the intellectual viewpoint that Chris gave him.
Rock's talents never cease to amaze...although interviewing people isn't part of his 'job', he handled this interview with more genuine curiosity and smarts than 90% of the 'pros' do...and u can tell Prince respected him too given his willingness to provide long, thoughtful answers.
These are some surprisingly hard-hitting questions. Normally, in a Prince interview you can tell that they were versed in advance in regards to what questions 'not to ask' as opposed to which ones 'to ask.' This interview seems comprised of all those questions that would normally fall into the category of 'questions not to ask.' I think that Prince chose this moment to allow that level of inquiry with Chris Rock, which shows how comfortable he felt with him. "Damn, I miss this man!"
Chris is very intelligent and talented and Prince knew that. Smart people connect at their own level. Both artists respect one another.
This is the most unguarded I've seen prince in an interview. So dearly misses💜
Looking at the past, cool, MTV - im surprised they dont realize why we all loved the MTV of the 80s and 90s. It would be a perfect streaming app, music videos, bring back the diff genre shows like headbangers ball, MTV raps etc. I mean it has potential. Bring back total request for all i care...Just miss the old MTV so much....

Agreed. Was just now thinking the same as I was watching & listening.
It's a rare occasion where you see the prince relaxing and being himself
Damn I miss Prince, what a cool man and immense talent.

Prince was just one of the coolest most talented guys to walk this earth, years have passed and still my heart sinks when I see and hear this man speaks he had so much more to give and ill miss him forever
I think this is one of, if not the best interview I've seen of Prince. For me, even in shades, he seems to drop his defense a bit to be accessible, as one would be with a friend. For Chris, this reminds me of his HBO series, The Chris Rock show. He shows skills that go beyond his comedy.
“Were All Children Inside” I know Exactly What he Means & Agree 100%. RIP 👑
Yes. Some of us more than others❤
One of the best interviews. The respect they have for each other makes this conversation comfortable and genuine.

Genuinely balanced and interesting interview. Chris Rock has the art and insight to ask genuine questions that intrigue Prince. You can see the mutual respect for each other. I found this beautiful.
Great interview. Rest in Power Prince. An absolute musical legend. 🎼🎸😎🙏🏽
Prince was Sun in Gemini, Moon in Pisces, Scorpio Rising. Combo of Air and Water. His music makes me feel so many good things! That’s how he’s immortal because one will never forget how the music makes us feel.
His ascendant persona was his personality.
Wow Chris is one of the best interviewers I've seen. Ask the most interesting and brain picking questions. Maybe it's because he actually is a huge Prince fan

It's 1997, and I literally wish I could even have the sliver of style and confidence Prince pulled off with this outfit today. Man was so far ahead in his time. The Literal embodiment of cool.
Chris Rock was very fortunate to be able to say he interviewed Prince!! From what has been told, he didn't normally allow himself to be interviewed!!
There will never be another musician and artist like Prince!! He played multiple instruments and very well!!! He composed, arranged, and produced his own music!!! How many can actually say that?
I think when Prince realized how valuable he was, the record companies recognized he was a force to be reckoned with. He wasn't going to allow himself to be manipulated and coerced into signing shady deals.
I am sure he upset a lot of executives when he chose to follow his own path and do his own thing. Hence, the creation of his own label!!
I have much respect for Prince for owning his music and not allowing the sharks to take a bite out of his creations!!! His freedom to do what he enjoyed and to perform with intensity is definitely missed.
He created real music playing many of the instruments himself. He was an amazing artist who is definitely missed!!! RIP Prince!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@12:53 - I love when he was basically like, "I'm peerless...ain't no rivalry, I'm the s***...come watch me at me show". 🤣 The legends inspired and motivated him...he was competing with THEM.
how it should be and he wasn't competing with them, music is not the olympics.
@@thestrangemanreturns music is art the music industry & business is friendly competition. there was a healthy relationship prince had with that & others. had lots of respect for michael talked with michael a lot more than we think, but still acted as if michael was never even in the same world as him. it’s all just to be the best among the best 💯

Most people would expect Chris to make a joke and to turn the attention to himself but he subverts most expectations and is as respectful as the best journalists are supposed to be.
Yeah. Thus is how it is done. I used to interview myself/ so I remember.
Oh my God this is a treat! Prince is so wholesome and objective to himself. Omg, he is cool. His soul is cool. You can tell Chris was nervous. Also Gemini represents the twins in astrology. Usually it means a duo personality.
*DUAL, not DUO. Also, that’s a common misconception & very simplistic, distorted description. It’s not about a dual personality. We all have ALL personalities. It’s about having multifaceted traits around EVERY personality type. Much more layered.
Little Red Corvette and ‘When doves cry’ are two all time great songs
I have been a huge Prince fan ever since he started. I listen to his music daily. What he said about the "elevator" is bone chillingly ironic. Prince died in an elevator.

I always loved him as an artist & the many configurations of his bands. A TOP TIER ARTIST. Multi-talented in vocals & instruments, the compositions, producing, arrangements. The man was music personified. With talented artists by his side he created sounds to last EONS !
I heard him on radio, saw him on film, experienced him in concert & was moved by all of his creations. My life has been enriched by having known him as a maker of music. Most artists pale in comparison. He has volumes of tracks revealing his great talent & there will never be another PRINCE ROGERS NELSON !

Prince was a far out dude 😅. When I was a kid in the 80’s he was straight up outrageous lol. I always liked his music and as I got older and heard him talk more I determined this cat isn’t just an entertainer he’s a mystic. He’s said a lot of things over the years even I at the time didn’t understand but he was ahead of his time. Way ahead of his time. I began to suspect all the androgynous years were an act as I got older too lol. He was workin the masses like a pro wrestler 😂. Like Adrian Adonis or Goldust lol. Gettin attention, gettin people talkin, messin with people’s heads……..sellin records 😂. A gimmick. Just playin Halloween. Genius. He did evolve though and the final version of Prince said he wouldn’t have put out the material early Prince did. Understood his power of influence. One of the coolest guys the planet ever saw.
Thanks for sharing your perspective, that was a cool read 👍
@@michaelsevilla3697 When he changed his alias and adopted the title “Artist Formally Known as Prince” he got totally ridiculed by the industry.
