The cause of the centre-gear splitting was/is the transport banging to a stop on FF/RWD at end of tape - the centre gear stops the spinning capstan/flywheel instantly (almost literally, probably c. 400 to 0 rpm in one revolution) and has a 'shock load' put on it in doing so. I owned a DD33 from new (1990) until I sold it 2018 and the centre-gear was still intact (almost unheard of), this was because I _always_ tried to hit STOP as the leader-tape appeared when winding a tape to the end (if you're in darkness you can _hear_ it if hold the player close to your ear - heh).

You didnt noticed the little black arm, which must be located between the two notches of the slider for the head movement.

I've wondered if the metal disc inside the centre-gear could be fractionally reduced in diameter, so that the gap in the broken plastic part can be closed up (matching the broken ends to re-form a contiguous tooth pattern). It would slightly reduce the diameter but perhaps not too much to prevent it meshing effectively with the rest of the transport. The important capstan to centre gear would be unaffected.

You forgot a couple of recommended steps, but one crucial step at 7:50 .....
I wonder who else noticed this 😬
I bet you did not test auto stop functionality yet....?

I have been thinking about this issue with the center wheel awhile ago and I came to the idea, that you could take an unbroken center wheel and reproduce or duplicate it by a 3D CNC-milling machine. There are severel online shops that offer this service and you can even choose a certain kind of plastic that is even much more stable hence it will probably last a lot longer instead of the already used one. But I dont know yet how much that will cost and if you could just send the center wheel to the service provider or you have to make a 3d file with a appropriate program or make a 3d scan(I dont know if that is already possible).
Have someone thought about this too and can give some further informations?
What do you think about this idea?

Hi Eliseo, I got the exact model, replaced the center wheel with Marians model, but now the FF is very hard to push and not locking, what could it be?

Is the faint sound at the end a sign of a properly working Walkman?

what about wearing center gear wm 2? does it affect the sound of the cassette tape later?

for the WM2 it has a very simular gear. actully almost exact so it will wear and effect the sound. Also gear cracks on the WM2 also. I have one i am using to replace my DDIII Center gear
