    As a frenchman, I have the utmost respect for Simon.
    With Tsonga, Gasquet and especially Monfils, you always wanted more. You always felt like they could do better, that they were crumbling in big matches they could win, that at least one of them should have won a slam or 2. But Simon was a warrior. He was a more limited player who maxed out his potential. Absolute respect.

      You know, I was going to post "what's the big deal about the 4th best frenchman of his generation retiring (unless it's the 1920s)?" but your post provided excellent perspective. You never felt going into a tournament "Simon's got a good chance to win this"... but you always worried when you saw that the player you were rooting for had to play him next.

      Monfils had a mental barrier. With his frame and athletics, should have played a power tennis style, instead he went the Gilles Simon way and never won a major. Tsonga yes, had the skills and the power but probably was a bit heavy always and struggled to maintain form in a long Grand Slam tournament. In the end the body gave up, it is a tough sport. I always liked Jo, such an entertaining player! My favourite French player all time!

    • @Fr0gSplashh
      @Fr0gSplashh Před rokem +2

      @@cristianconstantinescu7264 Tsonga did great. He was defenitely not as frustrating as Monfils. But he was a set up in the AO final against Djokovic, and he got those match points against Djokovic again at the French Open. And there's another time against Roger I believe at Wimbledon where he throws away the match. There's just a couple times where we thought he was gonna get over the hump but he never did. But overall a great career for Jo.
      You have to understand french fans. We have had many many players in the top 10, even in the top 5 in recent years. But we have not had ONE Grand Slam Winner since Yannick Noah in 1983. It's been 40 freaking years !
      French tennis fans are actually all quite sad. It's frustrating to be a french men's tennis fan. The women have fared a little better (Pierce, Mauresmo, Bartoli).

    Simon at his peak is glorious. He can lull you with his persistent absorbing baseline crowding, but then all of a sudden can inject pace out of nowhere to catch you off guard. Extremely dangerous, annoying, energy-draining and brutal to hang with. He makes you work hard against him. We will miss him. Amongst the many great players we are saying goodbye to.

    He was unique. Made tennis different, and got to the highest level with nothing but intelligence and hard, hard work.
    The only thing you can feel towards him is respect. A lot of it.
    And love, of course. Hopefully we'll see much more of him as a coach in a couple of years.

However anytime I think about him I always conme back to that awkward moment when at the press conference he crititzed equal prize money beacause more people wacth men´s tennis that women´s and Sharapova came after him and said something on the lines of: "Oh, Gilles do you really think more people watch your matches than mine ?"
