    I'm of Swedish ancestry, so this is not a comment on Sweden, but shear stupidity of how this was designed is why Saab went out of business. Thank you so much for the video, it is extremely helpful! I would love to post a picture of my foot, kicking the new filter into place (I'm not kidding). I will never change this filter again, I'll junk the car first. The cherry on top is that the bar that holds up the glove box, and that you have to reach over with your arm or leg, in order to cram the filter into place, is apparently sharpened at the factory before they put the glove box in. It is simply amazing, an example of how if they made the idiots that designed this mess have to actually work on the car, it would never have made it off the drawing board. Every car I've owned has stuff like this but this is about the worst - having to disassemble so much in order to change a filter.

      I love my 9-5 but this design is so stupid. Maybe a gift from the GM engineers? Changing the cabin air filter on my old Camry took almost no effort. Zero tools and job done in 1 minute.

    A very useful video. Thanks.
    I finally got around to changing the filter on my 2002MY 9-5 Aero today. It's a UK car so right hand drive and a little different to what is shown the video.
    Firstly the access is on the other side of the centre console. However it's a mirror image so the same process applies. One difference seems to be the fitting of the ECU (or whatever the very different looking electronics black box is on my car.)
    In mine the unit stands clear of the bulkhead and so blocks the access to the filter slot because of the length of the filter. The control unit is held in place by a black plastic mount that has a pressure clip point either side to release the whole thing from a metal bracket on the bulkhead. Once out of the way access is as per the video. The wiring harness on mine has plenty of slack to allow it to be dropped to the floor out of the way.
    The last filter change on mine was during a dealer service some years ago. So only 6 screws on the filter cover panel rather than 7 and no foam filler over the top of the filter! A creative mechanic will always find ways to hit the job time targets ...
    Fitting the foam strip was easier than I expected thanks to the guidance in the video. I had bought the cheapest filter I could find that looked something like the original. It has fitted OK but the top was some sort of felt material construction without plastic (the other 2 sides are plastic but not very strong) and so not very rigid making it difficult to push in without it buckling and distorting. I assume it is or will be OK once in place.
    To help with sliding it in after I had positioned the foam strip over the pipes I used a thin strip of hard material (some kitchen worktop edge trim in my case but a venetian blind strip or something similar would work just as well) to fit below the foam while pushing in the filter. Once the filter is in place the strip of material can be pulled out. Even though the filter was somewhat flexible (having no good rigid plastic surround) the slider strip seemed to make it much easier than it would have been to slide the filter into position.
    Now that I know what is involved from a 'hands on' point of view I would be quite happy to do the job again and maybe use a more expensive and better constructed filter to make it a little easier. (Maybe also obtain better filtration but I'm not sure I will ever know whether there is a real filtering difference between cheap and expensive to buy filters. I paid 1/6th of the price of the most expensive filters I found available for sale. Free delivery - which turned out to be next day even though ordered on a Friday afternoon.)

    Finally changed my filter. Wasn't too bad. I have 2007 9 5 . Like you said on later models Saab made it slightly more difficult.
    There is an electronic box with a big heat sink on the cover. I took it off, and had an awkward time fitting it back. Next time I would try to hang the cover up out of the way.

    Just a quick bit of information. SAAB did indeed pioneer cabin air filters. They were first used in the OG900 introduced in 1979. They were installed only on the non-AC cars as the A/C evaporator fitted in the same space in the A/C car.
    Nice video. You did catch that all the Torx screws are T25.

    Changed mine yesterday. I think your old foam was not put in correct, it was deformed in the left cut out. I guess thats why you struggle to fit your filter.
    It was a bit difficult to fit the left cut out correctly.
    Besides that, it was a Great guide. I wish i saw it yesterday.
    PS, in newer 9-5 there is a metall thing inside the cover, with elctricity in it. You have to disconnent the battery before changeing the filter!

    Thanks for this video, changed mine today. Altough my 9-5 aero -05 hirsch had extra airconditioning box of some sort under the ECU and on the cover for filter it had a extra (heating component?). Read that i have to remove fuse before screwing that from the cover. But overall this video helped a LOT :D This kind of videos help a lot people like me who have not had much experience on cars. I'm more of computer tech guy. But i have to say damn this was painfull work compared to other cars i done this.

    Hey guys, just wanted to say that I tested the Bosch cabin filter and found it difficult to install (took me over 20 min to slide it in place). Last year I bought a MEYLE cabin air filter, part no. 8123200006 - installed it in less then 10 seconds! Highly recommend! It's basically the same but more flexible. Both filters use active carbon.

  • @TobyField
    @TobyField Před 6 lety +1

    Just changed my cabin filter after watching your video. I have a 2006 car and your comments on the differences helped. However, the bolts on my filter cover were 6mm bolts like your old car. It was a real pain trying to keep the filter cover out of the way as there is a rheostat built in to the cover, Trying to hold it out of the way, the metal fins kept touching the ecu which made the blower motor turn on full speed. I wasn't expecting that. The sticker on the rheostat says to remove fuse 22 so I did that to cut the power. It's a real pain to change and I'm guessing a garage would charge quite a bit in labour to do it for you.

      I agree, Saab had so many stupid engineers, designing terrible interior. Not only the cabinet filter, but also headlights, cup holder, and everything else. The consumable items should be easy to be replaced by any adults. SAAB goes to hell now, it's good.

    • @MostGenericUser
      @MostGenericUser Před 10 měsíci

      I know this is 5 months old and you probably figured it out by now but that is a super common issue on 9-5s caused by broken blend doors. Search Saab 9-5 blend door repair and you'll see guides and parts to fix it. Basically a plastic piece that is attached to the blend doors in the HVAC system that moves to direct air flow will break and the doors get stuck in whatever position they were last in. Sometimes you can run the Climate control self diagnosis mode and it will get them moving again if they haven't fully broken yet. You do this by holding the auto and off buttons at the same time. The screen will display numbers that correspond to fault codes in the HVAC system. I'd get the aluminum blend door shafts as replacements so you'll never have this issue again

Jag kopplade inte loss kablarna som du gjorde utan jag tog faktiskt ut lampan från handskfacket innan jag kopplade loss sladdarna på baksidan. Everything in SAAB is difficult for parts replacement by non-professional, although CZcams video shows the details of procedures. No wonder, SAAB went out of business! On the other hand, Volvo has excellent design for parts replacement. even if a house wife or non-mechanics person can do the most of job. For replacement of SAAB headlight bulb, it is extreme difficult for anyone including auto mechanics. It was stupid to purchase two pieces of SAAB in 10 years. Never do it again.

    • @TrionicSeven
      @TrionicSeven  Před 7 lety

      Nah, I'd disagree. Never had a Volvo, though almost every DIY is easy to do on the Saabs. Even changing the xenon bulbs doesn't take more than 10 minutes on this car.

    • @grantp7975
      @grantp7975 Před 5 lety

      Sidelight bulbs are awkward, especially on the battery side. However it's quite easy to remove and refit the whole headlight unit making the task much easier. Many cars designed since around year 2000 have similar issues. Saabs are not as difficult as some far more mass market models of the time.
