  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder that results in breathing involuntary stopping for brief periods during sleep, with the most noticeable side effect being snoring. OSA results from the airway being blocked (obstructed) and is more likely to occur in overweight and obese individuals.
    In this video, Dr. Blaney talks about the link between obesity and sleep apnea.

    You know you hear so many different opinions on this subject. Weight causes sleep apnea, sleep apnea causes the weight. I've recently been diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. I've had it for years but finally getting it taken care of. I have a friend that has a CPAP machine. His wife told me as soon as he started treatment the weight started to fall off immediately. So I believe it's different for everyone. But I tend to lead more towards the apnea causes weight gain.

    For me the sleep apnea came first. I used to go to the gym then I noticed I had no energy anymore. Then I started to gain weight.

      Makes sense... so did you not have energy because of the sleep apnea?

    I opt to cure the sleep apnea 1st as it was the problem that made me gain wait due to the stress and bad hormones it caused. The wait made it worse but my sleep apnea was the primary problem. Getting my tonsils out.

    I was diagnosed recently. I am struggling the overweight from 5 years now. I don´t suffer form sleep apnea for being fat, this only made it worse. The doctors told me i suffrered form this condition since always... so... i am sick of ppl say to me "oh, you are fat, that is the reason of your apnea".... sick of it! I am a celiac too, so i have fisiological and nutritional issues that made me gain weight (proved by my medical results). Not every fat person has apnea because of being fat.

    Does the tongue increase in size as you gain weight? I’ve notice that my OSA is worse after gaining weight. My tongue has literally no room in my mouth. Sleeve coming soon!

    Hi Dr. Blaney. Nice video. Thank you! Funny at end🤣 Do you have examples of how cpap machine helps with weight loss?

    • @LiveHealthyMD
      @LiveHealthyMD  Před 2 lety +4

      The CPAP doesn't directly help with weight loss, but losing weight will help with sleep apnea and reduce the need for a CPAP. You could assume that the use of a CPAP machine will result in better sleep and thus leave you with more energy and put you in a clearer state of mind to make healthier choices throughout the day.

    No one should get bariatric surgery. Just stop eating sugar!
