I had been obese my entire life when I got into my 40's I started waking up with headaches. I had a sleep study I would stop breathing 60-80 times an hour my o2 would drop down to 72%. Sometimes I would wake up with my heart racing at night I'm estimating over 150 BPM that was because I had dropped oxygen down so low I was not waking up after I stopped breathing. Doctor said I was close to having a stroke, or cardiac arrest. I went on a 3 year plan to lose the weight my local gym I hired a trainer they got my weight down lost over 180 lbs. I'm down from 320lbs to 145 now I'm only 5'6" tall so can see how big I was. I no longer need the CPAP machine it took lot of hard work waking up with my heart racing scared me. It took long time even after I got down into normal BMI I still want to get down to 135 I'm about there.

Well done! I'm 40, 138KG (about 300 pounds?), wake up with headaches almost every day and also wake up with a racing pulse sometimes. I've never slept properly, suffering from insomnia, daytime sleepiness and heavy snoring since I was a teenager. Always had a real struggle keeping my weight under control, but just kind of got too tired a few years back and put on 50KG in 18 months (I've now lost 20KG, or around 44 pounds). Just had the sleep study done, and I am waiting to get fitted for a C-PAP. Honestly, I can see now how my screwed up sleep has messed with my entire life. Stories like yours make me hopeful that I can change things for the better. Thank you for sharing!

Been on a BIPAP for 5 years now. Was 325 now down to 250. Had sleep study done last night. I no longer need BIPAP but still need Cpap. But at least it’s getting better. I lost 70 pounds in a year. I simply quit eating but 1 meal at dinner time and didn’t go back for seconds. Drink lots of water. But didn’t exercise. I have a broken back so I have been forced to loose weight. I’m 52 and still on a machine. Blood pressure is almost perfect now so loosing weight is a must. You have to be strong willed. Don’t eat bread, cookies or sugars. Eat meats and green vegetables. That’s it. You can have a few tortillas when eating fajitas. You have to be creative but you are only eating 1 meal so you can have pretty much anything but don’t eat big plates. You will lose 1-2 pounds a week. There will be times it will slow and you think you are not loosing so don’t get on a scale but once a month and stick to it. Hope this helps.

Losing weight can certainly help sleep apnea symptoms, but it's important to note that weight is not the only cause. There are other risk factors like anatomy, hormones, and inflammation issues that contribute to apnea beyond just weight.
I struggled with severe sleep apnea for years even when I was in good shape and a healthy weight. I felt defeated and depressed constantly waking up exhausted no matter what I tried. It wasn't until I addressed the root causes - not just weight, but also hormonal imbalance, throat muscles losing tone, and nasal inflammation - that I finally found relief.
Making assumptions that weight loss alone will cure sleep apnea can actually do more harm than good. It places unfair blame solely on the sufferer, rather than empowering them to explore other evidence-based solutions. There are plenty of lean and fit people who still battle this disorder.
Yes, maintaining a healthy weight and diet can help, but it should be just one part of a more holistic approach. We need to change the narrative around apnea being a simple lifestyle issue. In reality, it's a complex interplay of anatomical, neurological and inflammatory factors. There are so many encouraging new treatments that don't rely on weight as the only answer.
I know the struggle, but don't lose hope. Keep advocating for yourself until you find the right solutions for YOUR body. You have the power to take back restful nights! Wishing everyone on this journey strength and perseverance.

Very informative - really, for 6 minutes, your covered a lot of ground and it was all very helpful - especially the effect of 'short sleeping' on the body's hormonal response - good work!

How about good diet and exercise instead of bariatric surgery.

I get what youre saying, but when you have a good diet and exercise, but youre not getting good rest at night it's a losing battle; without decent rest your body releases cortisol basically holding onto its fat stores thereby exacerbating the problem.

Which comes first...the apnea or the weight problem? Weight is always listed as a cause, but apnea itself can make people overweight

Don't I know that! 6 yrs ago using cpap changed my appetite away from carbs and sugar. I lost 200 lbs so easily and it never returned! My other health issues resolved too. The sleep apnea was so severe it screwed up my appetite hormones ghrelin and leptin.

I thought I would not tolerate CPAP therapy. However, I found the right mask and learned to use it. It is really a life-changing thing. There are so many mask options now. I hope you can find the right one. I use the nose pillow mask and the hose comes from the top of the head and I can sleep on the side and back. Life is good now.
