  • In this video we show you how we take a cleaned crankshaft and start the inspection process. It's all about measuring and making sure that everything straight.
    First we use a dial indicator to check the propeller flange runout to make sure it isn't bent. Then check the intermediate and rear main journals for runout. Finally, we use a micrometer to measure the main bearing journals and crankpin journals to determine whether or not they are within the manufacturers serviceable limits.
    **This video is intended only as an example of the inspection process and should not be used as a primary instruction. See the manufacturers instructions for continued airworthiness.
    We hope you enjoy our videos, thanks for watching!

    Nice. Do a video on how and what parts you send off for magnetic particle and dye testing after a prop strike. (Case, crankshaft, etc. and how you send it to the inspectors. Just a recommendation. Great job. Subscribed.

    Hello. Help me please. I disassembled the entire lycoming io-360 engine. ordered pistons, cylinders. But I don't understand what's wrong with my crankshaft. Where can I find the dimensions, passport for crankshaft repair? Need troubleshooting. I live in a remote area.

      Lycoming repair manuals and specification sheets are on their website

      Start by micing it to see if it's under spec. You are only aloud so much for your taper from exhaust to intake. You runout could be off

    I have a crankshaft with .0025 runout on the flange. Is there a shop that can bring it back into spec?

    • @Tyler-ru6bp
      @Tyler-ru6bp Před rokem

      That is already within spec. If you have a Lycoming crankshaft the maximum allowable runout is .005”

      @@Tyler-ru6bp thanks for the reply. I'll be using an 8" prop extension. I'm assuming that the runout would be exaggerated at the prop. Is this something I should be concerned about?

    This is the "hold your breath" part for the owner... a couple thousandths could cost you thousands $$$

    I don't see the car mechanics doing this.... That's y the aircraft industry is a serious business...
