“He’s a man who knows who he is in his soul.” Perfect description of Phil Collins. He’s a pretty good actor too
"The most iconic drum fill I can think of ever..." - Yes, yes indeed he is the most iconic drum Phil ever
Go check out Paulina from the warning, she hits harder than anyone, more complicated drum fills, and she's also the lead singer in many songs, and she's beautiful
Ok. I laughed so hard, that my beer went through my nose.
@@earshavewalls Poor beer.
Booo! Dad Joke penalty!
Okay, I laughed.
🙄🤣
I've seen Phil's video a million times. All that times I though "he's gonna be late for the fill". He never is.
Yeah my guess is he timed that out several times in practice, where he goes in that song and how fast he moves.
Let´s not forget about the legend playing bass, Mr. Father Time, the great Leland Sklar.
She paused on Lee, and I was like "Yay!"
Daryl Sturmer is forgotten too often as well.
It's Saruman :)
You don't forget what he looks like, but more importantly, you don't forget what a great bassist he is. His bass playing on James Taylor's "Your Smiling Face" is pure ear candy.
I remember the first time I saw him on stage and from the second I spotted him I never looked away. The beard just blew me away
What amazes me is that his voice remains the same despite the enormous physical energy he's putting into his drumming.
have to fully agree with this, shame i didn't hear it back from this uhms....Vocal coach...then again, never to late to learn and brighten your knowledge in being a vocal coach :-)
I realize I am kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to stream newly released series online ?
@Axl Parker I watch on flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
@Issac Briar Yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for since april myself :D
@Issac Briar Thanks, signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it !!
He wrote this song during his divorce. Banging away on the set and singing this must have been SO cathartic!
I can imagine it goes double for "I Don't Care Anymore".
"...singing this must have been SO cathartic!"
Gesundheit.
even the stage timing, reaching the drum kit at the perfect moment. so good.
and the drum kit reaching him from the trap door.
At Hammersmith on his first ever tour he sang it sitting on a riser up behind the kit and just dropped off it and on to his stool for the fill. A cool moment.
Pretty much the same arrangement though except maybe without the synthesised chorusy vocals (although maybe I’ve just forgotten that, it was 40 plus years ago 😂).
His breath control is incredible - to be pounding the drums like that and to know where to pull in enough breath to crank out those power verses while at the same time powering the muscles in his arms and legs.
He's been drumming while singing,, since his days with Genesis - both with and without P. Gabriel. Natural for him.
No wonder he’s retired ❤saw him in Melbourne. Twas wonderful.
He had a naturally occurring metronome in his mind. He could hear the beat, music and his own voice. A unique artist.
The only song everyone is waiting for a drumfill from the moment the song starts 😉
It's one of the few songs that can be identified by the drum riff. ("Something" is another).
@arvix star It is !
@@almostfm I think the drums rolling in "Money For Nothing" intro is very especially recognizable too. Maybe it's just me.
He once told during an interview that he never practiced the drum part of this song. When he wrote this song everything that happened was a coincidence coming from the soul.
I think it's a universal reaction when Phil brings in the drums. It doesn't matter if you're young or old, male or female, black or white, when those drums hit, you rock out, or play air drums... 🤟😛
Or drum on the nearest person as hard as you can.
Her accent, the smile when listening to music she loves, the knowledge in the realm of vocals, and that little "rawr" at the beginning of all her videos, so cute... gets me every time.
I just love this man travelling the world to watch him Genesis for 20 years
Phil Collins is a staple for all us that were kids in the 70´s and 80´s. Oh, sweet childhood
90 kids here and I LOVE Phil and Genesis. Great music is great music and transcends age I think :)
I'm 26 in 2 weeks and I listen to it cuz of my parents for over 20 years so yeah... Also 90s kids love this music❤️
Us 70's/80's kids got to hear it when it was first released, we had nothing to compare it to except greatness.
Phil was the first English singer that I could hear his accent while he sang. Always been a huge fan.
Is he english or Irish?
@@melissagreene4174 Born in the Chiswick district of London, so...
Beatles too.
Herman's Hermits, Pink Floyd, The Kinks, Moody Blues...
You never listened to the Beatles?
that came as a very pleasant surprise. Yes, that drum solo never fails to chill!
This MAN is a legend in his own time. Few get there when they are still alive. But Phil has done it! This is a great video and a wonderful song... I find it amazing that it appears that he is just strolling about the stage. NO. His time is perfect. He arrives at his drum kit just in time for his classic solo. Phil just has to be Phil. No need to set the place on fire or blow it up. The audience came to see & hear Phil.. I can not blame them. Phil is great in so many ways!!!!!!!!!!! This is a masterpiece!!
His sense of rhythm is something to behold - he manages such an amazing flow with so many little details and nuances, and it just feels so natural.
Loved the giddy, giggly girl that showed up - "he's walking to the drum kit!!!" I think *everyone* lives for that drum hit, maybe the most memorable & recognizable ever.
(Edit) To add to what you said, that fill to me is PRIMAL. It matches the sense of hurt and betrayal so perfectly...
Genesis just announced the other day they will be doing shows for the first time in 14 years. A 14-date series of shows. This song is so iconic. Even people who don't speak English sing all the lyrics when it's on.
Is he in shape to do that?
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 Word is, he worked out his back problem.
@@rollomaughfling380 Good. I like Phil.Collins.
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 He needs a chair the whole show. He can only sing. His Son Nic plays the drums .
@@OHshepard Well better than nothing.
He IS the rhythm! So glad you enjoyed it so much!
No frills yet amazing at the same time. A true legend.
Beth, You were so Damn cute when Phil started in on the skins!
You are always a joy to watch and I learned something about
Phil collins I did not know, about his singing. You Are Great!
Whenever I see a Phil Collins video, I make it a priority to point out, that although he is British, nobody has done more to preserve the history of The Republic Of Texas! Phil has spent so much money collecting Texas Historic Items, especially those pertaining to The Alamo, and then donating most of those items to The State Of Texas! God bless Phil Collins and God bless Texas!
Saw Phil Collins perform in 1990. One of my top 5 concerts ever.
Probably my favorite song from the 80s. This always reminds me of that iconic scene from the first episode of the classic TV series Miami Vice, one of the greatest single scenes in any TV show ever! Phil would go on to play a semi-regular role on the show as well.
6:42 - 6:54 to see you so happy is what makes these videos so special. The knowledge and analysis is amazing, but the imparting of joy to the world is what makes you the best Beth!
The most iconic drum Phil...
Indeed.
I think what I love most about Beth Roars is, after watching her Nirvana, Chris Cornell, and this video, she still obviously has a love for music as entertainment and lets it show. Keep up the amazing videos!
I love how he prowls around the stage before sitting at the drum kit, it always makes me happy when he plays that iconic part. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis in the mid 70's, Phil was apparently reluctant to become the singer. I've always been a big fan of Genesis and his solo music.
Yet his vocals on Selling England By The Pound were received pretty well.
@@rog2224 I've always liked his vocals, and they fitted well into the Genesis sound.
The Tarzan Soundtrack was awesome.

More Fool Me, For Absent Friends
This song was released in 1981, the same year I was born. Almost 40 years later and it still goes hard as hell.
1981 was 40 years ago!?!!?? Holy fuck I'm old
His bassist Leland Sklar has a great youtube channel where he tells the stories of songs and gigs with Phil and many other artists.
Thnx going to look for that!👍
People should look up the Leland. He has played with literally EVERYONE. He was with James Taylor from the beginning and played on hundreds of the biggest star's albums. Look him up. Amazing.
Recently found it as a direct result of watching others review this and a truly excellent watch it is too. Lee Sklar is as humble as watchable as he is good musically
fascinating, you're the first i think I've heard address how he drums like he sings. Power and attacking it all. Brilliant analysis.
YES, his voice is wonderful and unique. And his sense of timing is amazing!! Well he is a drummer! He goes for a walk around the set, but he arrives to the drum kit at the absolute perfect time for his timeless drum riff!!! I guess he is starting to have health issues, bummer. But it happens to everyone! We loss Tina recently, again bummer -- the Acid Queen is dead. Boo!!!!!!
I love the audiences response to him getting to the drums!! They know whats next!!!! That alone was the worth of the ticket to get in......
Was that special or what??? I think it is a classic. As is Phil....... Thank you & take care......................
"He's not throwing them around to show off" - I love how purposeful he is with the things he does. Like the use of a vocoder on his voice, as a contrast, a counter point. It's much more impactful than e.g. using it for the whole the song. Just like that iconic drum fill. It has such an impact (among other things) because he doesn't overdo it. Because drums were very subdued up to this point. Say more with less. You don't need to put your whole arsenal on display the whole time, every time. I think that's a valuable skill to learn, not only in singing. BB King could say more with a single note than a lot of players can with a whole song
I was spoiled growing up in the 80s and his songs filled the decade between his singles ( this was his 1st hit of so many) to Genessis to learn about how he makes his art is only to enrichen the experience. I so agree that everyone has their own voice. Learning to use it well is such a wonderful thing. Thanks for your lesson Beth.
Oh Beth, spot on with the great break down...he thinks like a drummer and therefore his singing style is accentuated by it as it plays right into who he is in his soul. Thanks Beth
I would pay a ticket to his concerts just for that drum fill and feel completely satisfied
Phil Collins Live and Loose in Paris DVD, best depression medication there is.
Nah, try the Berlin show from the '...But Seriously' 1989/990 tour for pure joy and euphoria. Should've been though, considering it was filmed the week the Berlin Wall came down.
I love your reaction videos.
I've been listening to Phil Collins with and without Genisis since the late 70s. In The Air Tonight is one of my all-time favorite songs. To this day, that drum solo gives me chill bumps! If the song comes on the radio while in the car, I turned it up to full blast and it truly puts me in a happy place. He said in an interview that this song would outlive him. I think he's right. :)
Never clicked on something so fast lol
8:33 this reaction... just amazing
One of my favorite parts of your review, is how you React knowing that Phil is getting ready to do his magic on the drums. Understood. That part of this song is known world wide....
Was fortunate enough to see him live a few years back. What a show. Even had his son up to play drums at one point and he was brilliant too!
Phil Collins. One of my favorites in my really young days. I love his clear and powerful voice.
OMGosh, one of the best drummers in the world!
I've been watching a ton of reaction videos and vocal coach reaction videos and I have to say you're the first person that's really spoken to me. I learned so much in such a short time, very engaging and an infectious enthusiasm both for the music and for sharing your knowledge.
What a great video on several levels.
Subscription=no brainer.
I got lucky once - I heard on the radio when tickets for Genesis went on sale in 77’ and was first in line when the box office opened at 7am. The concert venue was an old fashioned opera hall and I got front row center balcony seats ! It was really something to see Phil stepping into the lead singer role with such confidence and sounded quite similar to Peter Gabriel so the older songs were sounded authentic too. My favorite concert ever !
This is a such great song. The drum breakdown is something every dad ever will imitate. The way he slowly moves towards the drums hypes up the crowd since they know what’s coming. Your reaction to that was wonderfully cut and full of emotion. Love it
Also fun fact. People think this is romantic because of how it sounds. It’s not all if you read the lyrics
For another drummer singer check out Jen from Skillet. Most don’t have a clue how hard it is to sing without the drums affecting the voice and vice versa
Drumming and singing so difficult Phil is the GOAT
Phill , played one of the children in the Beatles , Hard Days Night ...
here is something to think about that I have not seen anyone comment on. from the moment he is at the top of the stage, walks down the stairs, walks across the stage, up the stairs, finally gets to the drums is the exact time he needs to be at the drums. that in its self is awesome
Phil is a legend. Period. ❤
Gorgeous, sweet and kind, helping everyone feel important, very rare
Great reaction. Always loved his singing and drumming. This song became famous because of the drumming. Bought it immediately when it came out. Am i that old already? Listened a lot to it. Thank you for tis reaction.
You young lady have a special appreciation of music!
Gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it. Fantastic song and performance!!
Favourite vocal coach analysing an outstanding song. ❤️🙏🏼
A masterpiece.
I love Phil Collins
Loved your analysis here Beth, thank you! I've seen this video like a hundred times, and it never gets old! Seeing Mr. Collins live is a dream of mine. Genesis is on tour late this year, and they're coming to the states. But no where near my state! Argh! Lol
Glad you enjoyed it!
The funny thing is that I have seen several interviews with Phil Collins, and he has said that he never wanted to be a front man. He would have been happy to live out his musical career perfecting his art drumming.
For sure one of the best artist all times!
Collins has said that he drums like a singer and sings like a drummer, so you got it absolutely right.
I saw this same performance live in Florida on his "First Final Farewell Tour"...simply AMAZING in person...the whole show was fantastic!!!! He ran around stage without seeming to get tired at all...and actually SANG (not synced like many current stars) and he sounds exactly like his albums in person....this is a legend for sure :) *if you aren't doing the drums/singing with him by the end, there's something wrong with you hahaha
Really enjoy the informative intelligent comments, thank you Beth!
Brilliant Beth!
Love Phil Collins and Genesis with him as lead. REALLY loved watching a very happy girl react. 73, Mike
Would love to hear you analyze Genesis VIDEO of 'Mama'. Phil's voice covers more ground yet holds that emotion and he also uses those percussive sounds in the lyrics. The video captures the 'heat of the city' and the mood incredibly well.
to me its crazy how the guitar in this song really tells the emotion behind what hes singing, it really gives off these dirty yet melancholic vibes that the song is about
Awesome choice!!!!!!
In The Air Tonight has to be paired with the Miami Vice driving scene
I actually think it fits better in GTA5
I really enjoy watching these. Your joy for the music is infectious. :)
Phil Collins is Genesis he is amazing music is a personal choice yes taking it to another level
Love your authenticity! Thanks so much.
Such a simple fill yet...pure genius. You don't need to do fancy stuff to create a legendary sound.
Fun to see you get down to this, Beth. 😄 Great it appeals to all generations!
What a brilliant reaction! You are enlightened. That was a very cool reaction
I miss that voice on MTV. When I was a very young boy he was the voice on radio and TV. I especially love the Invisible Touch record.
Loved your reaction thanks
Glad you enjoyed
it is a pleasure to watch your honest and heart felt joy of music. The drum rift shows this quite well. Thank you lady!
I Hear this and think of the TV program Miami Vice ,, enjoyed your reactions
The best drum fill of all time.
It’s super interesting to see how he’s reproducing production techniques from the record in a live setting. They used a vocal limiter with settings that emphasised those hard consonants at start of the words, and how you talk about the ways that he’s reproducing that attack with glottal stops and the like is very cool. He also seems to be making some interesting decorative choices on words in the song that had echo/delay/reverb or other effects on them. Thanks for the great video!
In 500 years, if we haven't been destroyed, by ourselves, or by... someone else... This song will still be heard on whatever will pass as the "airwaves!"
I liked and appreciated your insights into his voice, technique, and timing. But I really enjoyed your exuberance in the music. Keep on keeping on!
MB
I enjoy Mr. Collins abilities both as a drummer and as a singer. I agree with you that most everyone in the world is familiar with this song. Take care...
I have it on good authority that (before his physical issues) that if you were to meet Phil in person, and didn't recognize him, he would just tell you that he's a drummer.
Also the reason why that simple, yet iconic fill hits you so hard, is because you have to wait foe nearly the entire song for it to come in. It's a flawless example of how to build tension to a critical mass before releasing it!
Spot on, which is why it was a crime that the record company demanded drums all the way through on the single version.
I know people made a lot of comments about Leland Sklar but let's not forget about Phil's drummer Chester Thompson. He played with Phil and Genesis for over 30 years. If you ever get a chance watch him drum he is awesome.
Also their dueling together is awesome to see!!
I genuinely enjoy the way you enjoy and appreciate the music like I do ☺️
One of the unfortunately forgotten greats
Forget Phil Collins.... (and I love Phil Collins) *YOU'RE A REAL CUTIE !*

😂😂😂😂
i love phil collins, everything from his time in genesis, his solo stuff and his movie soundtracks. he went hard on the tarzan soundtrack for us all
This song was therapy
I for one love it. I love your reaction. Stay well!!!!
He is like a preacher.
yes... yes.... YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
If you don't squeal like a maniac at the drum fill, really take a moment to consider yourself, who you are, what you value. Please, it's very important.
Oh, Beth, you are amazing. I could listen to your analyses all night. (and have) You bring something extra to these reaction videos which i absolutely love.
