  • A video analysis of what makes the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and Lord of the Rings in general) brilliant, and why almost no media since has matched up to it. From its story, to its characters, to its soundtrack, to its core themes and inspiration - what makes the Lord of the Rings a masterpiece?
    With the new Amazon Rings of Power series coming out later this year, now's a better time than ever to look back and answer this question.

Between the line (straight from Tolkien), the acting of both Miranda Otto and the late, great Bernard Hill, the vision of Peter Jackson, and the amazing score by Howard Shore, it’s almost too much to take without eliciting some raw emotion. Tolkien was a huge admirer and great friend to CS Lewis. Lewis famously wrote that technology and “progress” were terms devoid of any real understanding. “Progress” is always used as a drumbeat for marching toward an unspecified and ultimately undefinable end. Technology promised to give man “power over nature,” but all it did was give some men power over other men. I think Tolkien took these themes to heart and, undoubtedly with his supremely Catholic belief, manifested these ideas into his story telling.

    Great video. I've seen quite a bit of fairly well-argued criticism of the LotR movies for giving Tolkien's story the "Hollywood" treatment (lots of focus on the big battles, Gimli being effectively turned into a comic relief character, Arwen's role being expanded for the sake of "female representation", Faramir having his character altered for added drama, some parts of the story being cut entirely etc), but that does lose sight of the bigger picture, namely the sheer amount of passion and love for the source material that's clearly still present, and how its core values and message is still largely preserved. Realistically, I don't think we could have hoped for a better movie adaptation of the LotR.

    • @PaxTubeChannel
      @PaxTubeChannel  Před 2 lety +56

      Yeah, Christopher Tolkien famously did not like the films because he thought they lost some of the magic of the story to focus on action scenes & things like that. I definitely get where he was coming from, but at the same time I think the films were the best you're going to get from a film adaption and delivered the story to new generations. Without the films, I probably wouldn't have heard much about LOTR.

    • @hailthevictoriousdead
      @hailthevictoriousdead Před 9 měsíci +8

      I think it is unfair to say that Gimli was reduced entirely to comic relief. While he does display a sense of humor, much of the comedy is based on his resolute pride durning "embarrassing" moments such as falling off the horse and needing to be thrown. While somewhat funny, it also exemplifies the pride of the dwarves. These little bits set up character development (he goes from not wanting to be thrown and taking offense at being told to recover his strength, to being thrown at Helms Deep and fully accepting Legolas as a friend) of Gimli overcoming his pride. I also consider much of the "comic relief" moments to be fairly realistic. As a dwarf, it is fair to assume he had little to no previous experience riding horses and running cross country, and would bristle at any prospective ridicule from the rest of the Fellowship.

    I think there's one reason as to why they will never be matched, and that's because absolutely everyone who worked on LotR, actually CARED.
    Sean Bean hiked up a mountain in full costume and make up, Orlando Bloom had a broken rib and Viggo a broken toe but they kept filming, Helms Deep took a month on night shoots in the freezing cold, and all the extras were so happy and excited to be there, and gave it there all.
    Everyone from the dudes holding the mics, and doing the lighting, to the prop department, music, visual effects, cinematography, absolutely everyone wanted to make something special, and they all poured their hearts into it.
    Modern productions now are just to pay the bills, nobody really cares about the work they're doing, they're just following the formula laid out by the studio as they jump from sound stage to sound stage surrounded by green screen environments, there's no passion, no desire, and no creativity, the studios seem to actively restrain good creators and artists, whilst giving free reign to people who are incapable of even having something resembling a unique idea or thought.
    And that's not even mentioning the story, themes, morals, meanings, depth, history, mythology, symbolism, ideology and more that is contain in LotR, both in the films and books.
    Also crazy fun fact, Peter Jackson's Grand-dad fought at the Battle of The Somme, alongside Tolkien and C.S Lewis and many others, during the War he'd meet some soldiers from Australia and New Zealand, which inspired him to emigrate there, which would then bring middle-earth to life.

    I really do like Tolkien's clashing contrasts of Industrialization/Urbanization and Traditionalism/Ruralization.
    It just really resonates with me,
    While I know that Tolkien absolutely hated allegories; But I think due to the intense passionate hatred he had for Industrialization alongside modernization. (Which he was quite fervent in his disdain for; I once again think, that no one here can deny that) and him constantly experiencing it first hand during his whole, entire lifetime. he somewhat-intentionally (Or at the very least maybe not being fully consciously aware that he did make one here about it) made a symbolic allegory towards it in his writing.
    Also a Question for you, Pax: Personally, Who do you think the Dundlendings and Endewaithians are based off of or are influenced by?

      Harad is obviously the Arab-Muslim world. The Easterlings I’m not sure of. The Númenoreans and their descendants imo are the most interesting. They take inspiration from the Atlantis myth and have a lot of parallels with Rome, however they almost strike me as English, especially Aragorn. Aragorn is described not only like an Englishman, but he’s the archetypal “good king” that England is known for. So would it be safe to say the Númenoreans are a blend of the English in the High Medieval period, and the Romans? I always interpreted the "accidental" destruction of the one ring as a commentary on how tyrannical evil is ultimately self defeating. Remember that it was lust for the ring that caused Gollum and Frodo to disregard their surroundings and accidentally drop it into the fire. A corrupting influence or tyrannical overlord can dominate everyone and gain insurmountable power, but it is also forced to rely on broken, damaged people that will eventually cause the system to implode.

    One thing I really like about LotR is how Tolkien always said Middle-earth is our world, just with a made up history and you can notice that as time goes on, the more fantastical elements of Middle-earth start to fade. In the First Age there were enormous large scale battles that included multiple dragons and balrogs and all sorts of other fantastical creatures and elf magic was incredibly common, and heroes of elves and men were achieving incredible feats. In the second age, most of the dragons and balrogs are gone, the werewolves and vampires are completely extinct, the greatest cities and realms of the first age are all gone, and elves are starting to dwindle. In the third age, elves are starting to leave middle-earth and their magic over it is continuting to decline. And when the fourth age starts, all the elves are gone, the orcs are basically extinct, and all that's left are realms of men and dwarves, and the Hobbits, which is all much closer to what our world is like. And with a few inferences and theories, we can even connect it all the way. From the beginning of The Hobbit, we can infer that Hobbits have since been hiding from Men and are all but forgotten, and today there are people with something Men call dwarfism, which could infer that the dwarf kingdoms were abandoned and the dwarves integrated into the society of Men.

    I absolutely adore the Lord of the Rings movies.....I've just seen them a couple of months ago, and really wish I've seen them sooner (I guess it's because when they first came out I was very little I could get easily afraid). Now I'm currently reading the books and they are easily some of my favorites works in all fiction, I've already finished The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, I plan to read both The Two Towers and The Return of the King as the Silmarillion. Since I also love C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, I also plan to read his other works like The Space Trilogy (I've heard of them and I think that those are very important to the present we live in). Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain is another series I'm very interested upon on.
    As a Christian, I found both Tolkien and Lewis's works very inspiring; and it even makes me wanna write a story of my own (I don't make any promises), about spirituality and the decaying situation of society as a whole, with a very christian point of view.

    I watched a couple of interviews of Tolkien recently. The British journalists were much better educated back then. They attacked him fairly viciously for writing a story with moral absolutes even though there is no outward mention of any “god” in his stories. No one prays in either the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings but just the idea of good against evil seemed to be quite outrageous to them. One journalist was particularly incensed that there was a mention of evil.
    By the 1950’s atheistic ideology was fully in control of the more prestigious colleges and universities in Europe and the USA. A moral absolute is absolutely against their ideology and quite insulting to their elite sensibilities! According to the atheistic elites ideology everyone is supposed to do as they please unless they do something other than what the elites want, like pray to the Christian God or suggest that some activity might be “evil.”
    Although Tolkien was an academic he was also a Roman Catholic, which is not a popular position among British elites. That made him a target. If he had been a Protestant he probably would still have been attacked but maybe not so strenuously. The atheists began taking over the most prestigious higher learning institutions of of the west during the mid 19th century. After WWII Europe was rebuilt as a supposedly secular society. Go to Europe today and you see the old churches rotting. Europeans tend to be amazed that so many Americans still attend churches.
    Tolkien does promote the theme of good against evil but it is a stretch to see any actual Christian content except for that very fact. To see Gandalf the wizard as Christ is a real stretch.
    Today there are not supposed to have any moral absolutes so the people who made this new takeoff of Tolkien’s work are now showing us how Tolkien should have written. Of course, he is considered to be a racist, as most white people are considered to be by elites, but they point to the fact that Tolkien did not include anything about skin color in his writings but he did not put black people as the enemy either. He is nonetheless the enemy.
    If we did not have the Jackson movies Amazon’s propaganda tool may have worked because there would have been nothing to compare it to but since those movies are still quite popular this mess that Amazon created is laughable. There are still millions of indoctrinated people that may find the series of interest and as the dumbing down and propaganda pieces continue it will effect more and more people who do not know any better.

    Like the book, it managed to forge a path for the genre of quality and mature fantasy; this time in film. If you watch any of the fantasy films from before the LotR they are all b grade, that or they are made for kids.
    The score was a master piece, the props were like real, the cast was fantastic, there was no wokeness or director agenda. It managed do all this and at the same time adapt one of the greatest pieces of fictional literature to film while somehow managing to capture the very soul of the original work (an extremely rare thing of book to film adaptions).

Or if they made a move about northern Africa in the 1800s and half the population was white? It wouldn't make sense. This is the best way I can put it if Token was a black man living in Africa then I'm pretty sure they would have made the movie with all black characters and that would be right to do it would fit the writer's culture. But let's be honest prime is trying to catch the biggest audience with rings of power so they're interest isn't making a good show its making the biggest profits.

Listen, I’m not a big fan of the new show either but if having people of color is the most unbelievable thing about a fantasy world to you then uhhhhhh. You’ve got some other issues I think. You should be mad about the fact that they’re adding in characters that don’t exist in the books and the fact that they’re condensing thousands of years of storyline, not that they have a few black actors.

      Dumping a random black person into an entirely unbelievable role is not representative, fair on the character or benefits the movie. Yeah sure just cast one black elf into an entire demographic of white elves, likewise with the dwarf, and it makes it look like colourblindness. Wtf?
      And yet they had an opportunity to cast an entire town of brown people that worked with the source material, the world geography, that made sense within what little there is of a story... and they were all white. So who's the rac!st?
      No-one cares if the one dwarf is black if you can write a story to explain why that is. But it's just blatant laziness, diversity hiring and lack of storytelling.

    I think what I love about this series is the fact that Gollum is generally a story about never giving up pity or compassion. If Bilbo had killed Gollum during the Hobbit as Frodo suggested in the Fellowship of the Ring and Gandalf replies "Do not be so eager to deal out death and judgement"... the ring would have never been destroyed because nobody had the will to destroy it, nobody could, that's the point of the story. So in the end Bilbo's pity and mercy on this horrible murderer saved the world. That is so unique as a story element that you never see, especially today where the world is so intent on punishing, hating and wanting vengeance on people for the smallest mistakes.
    Its a story against much of the apathy that western society has fallen into, where the problems of our society have gotten so large, many people have given up or forgotten how to care.
