    Such an adorable couple.
It feels good seeing you guys achieving your dreams and living your lives as you love.
The first period of owning a sailboat is the most expensive because you have to refit and add your personal signature to your floating home.
In the future, you will realise that many expenses are unnecessary and you can have the same results by spending less.
I suggest you invest the maximum on things that reduce costs, for example, more photovoltaics and large-capacity lithium batteries.
Those upgrades can help you to save money on fuel and gas.
You already have a satellite communication device (Starling) so the satellite phone can not do anything better.
Watermakers can reduce your visits to marinas and also can provide 100% drinkable water so not need to buy water.
Try to understand the procedures on how to maintain and service the equipment, engine and other peripheral systems. The sailing community has published lots of books on DIY works on the boat, and I am sure you can find them useful.
In the end, you need to realise that the most elegant and delicatessen supermarket is located exactly underneath the sailboat and it is free 😉
So you can invest in a fishing gear box and I am 100% sure that this investment will pay off at the same time you get your first tuna.
Wish you all the best, many kisses from Greece and I hope to meet you out there one day ❤

Hi! Thank you for your lovely words! It means a lot to us that you took the time to comment and share your thoughts! ☺️
We are getting there that we figure out how to optimize our costs and are soooo looking forward to saving on marinas and investing in some new lures to catch some fish 😉
We definitely believe like you say that some investments will pay off in the future!
Sounds like you habe a lot of first hand knowledge - are you living on a boat too?
All the best to you from La Palma on the Canaries 🤗

@@patandfrankie Thank you for your kind reply. After 25 years of living on a sailboat, I've noticed what are the upgrades that save money and matter to everyday life in the sea. I am a scientist and engineer, and in old times was not easy to work from the boat. Today Starling technology solves this problem and I can enjoy long time passages and extraordinary destinations.
New sailors, are often overdue with the equipment and sacrifice tons of money in the name of safety. I am a gadget guy and I love to have the latest equipment. (some of them are still in the box after two years 😅)
I have changed 3 sailboats until I find the one that meets my needs, and this is my biggest mistake of losing money. I rushed to get sailboats that were not suitable for my type of sailing. On sailboats world size matters so today I own a 2012 Bavaria 50 and I am happy with the capabilities, performance and layout of this particular sailboat.
The only thing that can drive you away from this lovely lifestyle is the boat running costs. I choose to invest in equipment that reduces running costs.
My No. 1 investment was energy production and storage. (I paid twice for this task until realised that quality equipment "Lithium Batteries" are much better when they last longer).
The No. 2 investment was about food storage and a capable water maker. More fridges longer time to isolated places, fewer visits to expensive tourist destination supermarkets.
The No. 3 investment was to replace all the inlets and outlets below the water with high-quality plastic ones. This saves me a ton of money because I need to replace them every 6 years not every 2 years.
I stop paying for all those cleaning products. White cleaning vinegar and a soft brush are the best for maintaining and cleaning almost everything in the boat.
I can see you invest in parts. You can not imagine how much money you save with this investment. By sailing the South Hemisphere and seeking Volvo engine parts is an expensive sport. Boats have several electric motors, so try to keep some brushes for the alternator and other motors around the boat. A second water pressure pump in the box must be on board too.
Enjoy te ride, and thank you for your reply :)

Very interesting article, I hadn't imagined it would be like that... you'd think it would be much cheaper... but you could be wrong!! Thank you for the insight!

Thanks - we thought maybe a bit cheaper but we work on it to reduce the costs. And we a pretty sure that we can reduce the cost after some time and in the new sailing area. 😊

As you live on your boat overtime, you will find cost saving alternatives according to your lifestyle and budget. I recommend as you continue your journey, to talk with other cruisers over a glass of wine, what they budget and spend. the Rigging Doctor channel dives into some of these cost issues, as well, things they wasted money on. My friends, a couple, are cruising the coast of Mexico on a Morgan- Catalina 44, said they spend 1/2 the costs compared to living on land. Every day is an adventure, is what they tell me. Enjoy your channel Mahalo.

Hi! Thanks for those tips and interesting thoughts! 😊
We are interested in how our expenses will change now that we have a solid „setup“ and soon we’ll be anchoring more and hopefully also catching a fish or two 😉 and get to reduce some costs..
Nice to have you on board!

How did you get your fixed costs so low? Starlink marine package is 270/month alone, satellite service plans vary, but aren't cheap.

    • @patandfrankie
      @patandfrankie  Před dnem

We try to optimize where we can. We use just the Priority GB for Starlink and for our Sat Phone we have a one year contract. That worked well.

Thanks for the input! We think that it is clear that we are talking about our costs and also give a range of possible costs as boatlife expenses are very individual

Good start for the video...not telling the boat price which would have given away an idea how much you have in the bank. If you do these videos please get to the point and don't beat around the bushes.

Thanks for the feedback. So you mean that you would prefer just the facts without any information around it? We tried to do it also for people without boat experience - based on our situation 1,5 years ago.
