    Many years ago, shortly after moving from Paris to a small village near Reims, I understood at least one reason why the FN was successful. The election leaflet from the left was a small black & white photo + two A4 sides crammed with small print. The right sent out a small colour photo + info on one side of an A4. Then there was an A5 brochure: several pages, lots of colour photos, simple headings, large print....easy on the eye, easy to read, easy to understand. And on the back the NF logo.

      Most of Europe has not undergone the degree of land consolidation that happened in Britain and as a result there remains a continuity of a small farm system, with it a small farmers’ culture and therefore the continued presence of peasants as a social, cultural and political class. Mostly culturally conservative and economically left leaning, they have their own political parties and are largely doing their own thing, very often in opposition to the city folk. Frankly I believe Britain would greatly benefit, culturally and socially, had something similar been preserved. But it wasn’t. (Edit- the word peasant carries negative connotations in English, not necessarily in other languages. In other languages there is often significant pride attached to it. This say something about the English attitude towards social class and about the attitudes of other countries, but it doesn’t necessarily say what you thought it did.)

    • @jamesanthony9316
      @jamesanthony9316 Před dnem

      @nosuchthingasshould4175 it just hasn't existed in Britain for such a long time there was nothing to preserve. There is no "folk" in the UK like on the continent. Alan Macfarlane's great work the origins of English individualism goes a long way to explaining why this is

    This is what happens when large part of the population lose hope. Politicians need to start looking after their people or this is going to keep happening in countries everywhere. They can't just keep letting things get worse with policies that are all show and don't actually solve things.

      Yeah, they won't.
      I don't think you fully understand how the Far Right works.
      They thrive off finding an 'other' to hate and blame for all the problems people face in society. Can't get a job? It's clearly not because employers are minimising both the number of people they have to employ but also the amount they have to pay them; it's because of Martha down the road.
      If that 'other isn't immigrants, it's LGBT people, or non-white people, or the Jews. Or women who don't want to be just wives and mothers.
      Or a combination of everything, really.

    33 minutes in….. very worrying that my sons friends….intelligent young men (20-21) from a rural area, with University degrees, jobs, and apprenticeships, and no local visible effects from immigration, are planning to vote for Reform UK. Something has appealed to them and it’s a real worry for the future of UK politics. There is also no party for naturally inclined, left wing young people.
