SRAM Doubletap to dropper lever Mod

  • In this video, I demonstrate the process I used to install a dropper post to my gravel/rainy day commuter bike. I recently converted the bike to a 1x system, leaving the left/front SRAM Force 22 shifter unused. I show how to convert a SRAM Doubletap shifter into a dropper lever with a simple modification.
    I also wanted to incorporate my existing cable stop and under BB cable guide into the mix. The only part not shown in the video you'll need is a second inner shift cable. Follow along as I show how I made it work.

    I just done mod today, It worked no problems and was really easy. This has saved me big time. I had a left lever that was actually the dropper post version which I got local from Australia, then I order right shifter from US and didn't read it and it was another left shifter for front mech. Ended up returning dropper level shifter back and kept the front mech shifter from USA and modified

    Great video, I'm attempting to do a similar process on my Gravel bike with Sram Rival HRD shifters. I have internal cable routering so I planned on using the cable splitter in the front near the entrance to the frame routing. Fingers crossed!

    If you remove your crankset, you can use a Dremel to cut a slot in the bottom bracket between the down tube and seat tube.
    It keeps the routing looking really clean from the outside.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  Před 4 lety +1

      The only issue with that is that the cable runs externally. I considered adding a hole to route the cable like a normal dropper, but I didn't want to go that far until I was convinced a dropper post was a viable option on this bike.
      Thanks for your feedback!

      @@JoeyMesa I ran everything internally.
      Edit: I see what you mean, your frame wasn't meant for internal cabling.

    Anybody knows if this hack can be done with the left shifter from Apex 2x10 line? Apex is also this DoubleTap technology, but as shown in the video there were some differences between Rival and Force, so I wonder if Apex internals will also allow for that. I don't own the shifter from 2x10 line (I am currently on Apex 1x11) so I cannot check that myself.

    Great video! Have there been any longer-term issues with the cable and the teflon cable housing? I could see there being friction where the cable enters the seat tube through the hole you created. I am wondering whether it would be worth the trouble to install a rubber grommet/port or some other solution.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks! I used the dropper post on this bike for about a year, then put the normal seat post back in. I never had any issues with friction with the cable/hole in the frame interface, but when riding in snowy/icy weather, the cable would freeze up under the cable guide causing the seat post to stay in the compressed position.
      That was really the only issue I had long term with it. Ultimately, I just didn't think I used it enough to justify it on this bike.
      Thanks for your question!

      @@JoeyMesa Right right right. Cable freeze up. I'm in Minnesota, so I've had/would have that problem too. I'm thinking an external dropper post might be the better option for me even though I prefer the clean look of the internal version.

    You sold me on the dropper for road cycling, I always felt the seat was too high for stop lights. I'm doing this to my bike. I run shimano ultegra 6800, just need to figure out how to convert the shifter.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah, I'm really liking it so far! I've got 6800 components on my road bike, so I'll investigate what's involved in converting one of these levers and make a video of the process.

    Hi Joey, I was wondering if you think it would be possible to 3d print a different diameter cable piece for a different pull length. I don't know what that little piece is called. But I'm curious to see if one could be made to run an 11 speed mountain bike derailleur without the need for the jtek shiftmate which I have.

    • @chrissmith2729
      @chrissmith2729 Před 4 lety

      My guess is this is the main contributor to the amount of pull a shifter has. Would I be wrong on that?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  Před 4 lety

      Your logic is correct, the diameter of the grooved cable guide/ratchet ring (not sure if that's what it's called) would control the cable pull ratio at the shifter. There are two problems to overcome though. The first problem is that the metal ratchet portion and the plastic part that holds the cable (the part you're looking to make) are molded together. I've never tried to separate the two, so I don't know what would be involved with replacing the plastic portion. Could be as easy as bonding it on with 2 part epoxy?
      The second problem would be size. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the cable guide piece would need to be a larger diameter circle and the available space in the shifter body is pretty tight, so I would think you may have some clearance issues.
      It would definitely be a fun experiment to try though!
      Thanks for the question!

    • @chrissmith2729
      @chrissmith2729 Před 4 lety

      @@JoeyMesa ok thanks, ya, that was my next question, how much room is in the body. Was also thinking if the 10speed cable guide is slightly smaller and could be used glued to the 11 speed ratchet then it might work with 10 speed rear mountain derailleur. The pulls are slightly different even though they both say exact actuation

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, both 10 and 11 speed are Sram Exact Actuation, so the actual pull ratio is the same (plastic cable guide), but the 10 speed has 1 less tooth on the ratchet wheel, so that is why the actual cable pull is more. A 10-speed road shifter and 10-speed MTB rear derailleur will work together, but 11 speed Sram MTB derailleurs are X Actuation which is not comparable with the 11-speed road as you already know.
      The Sram road shifter pulls the cable 3.1mm per shift, where a Sram MTB shifters pull the cable 3.48mm per shift (I just looked that up), so I'm not sure how much, but the cable guide pulley would need to be a bigger diameter. You could experiment with gluing a small shim over the existing cable guide pulley to see if 1 - you can get the correct ration and 2 - if it will fit in the shifter housing.

    • @chrissmith2729
      @chrissmith2729 Před 4 lety +1

      @@JoeyMesa the pull ratio is the same but the pull distance is different. According to sram. My LBS contacted them and they said the two are different. Couldn't get the two to work together so I tried a shop to adjust.

      Make sure the dropper cable isn't kinked anywhere and moves freely. Also the coil return spring on the wheel that holds the cable head must be in place as well.
