  • In an earlier video we installed a dropper post on a mountain bike ( • How to install a dropp... ). That was a Fox Transfer post where the cable starts at the post and ends in the lever. In this video we're installing a Pro Discover post (which starts at the lever and ends in the post) on a gravel bike. There are a number of important differences and we show you all the tricks we've learned for installing this kind of post.

      My trials bike doesn't need one (it doesn't even have a seat;-). My classic steel road bike that's arguably a little too big for me doesn't have enough post showing to make it worth it. Most other mountain bikes and gravel bikes in the family have droppers (or are longing for one).

    • @MTB_Rider_96
      @MTB_Rider_96 Před 3 lety

      Obviously not "Every" bike. That's not even close to being a logical statement. I love my dropper post - on the bikes where I need a dropper post. Otherwise, on a bike that is only ridden where no dropper post is required, it's just unnecessary dead weight.

      I added a dropper post to our family cargo bike, Bullit, so both my wife and I can use it easily. The quick release was an issue because they steel the seat-post and saddle, and having a screw was too complicated in everyday use. In the end I also added a Pitlock anti-theft screw.
      Btw, I had to buy the looongest dropper post I could find, to bridge the difference in height between the two of us. I chose an external routing option, as internal routing would have needed like 2m of cabling because of the shape of the frame.
      I plan to add a dropper post to our other e-bike, so we can both use it comfortable. At the moment the seatpost is set for my wife, which is too low for me.

    Damn! I installed that exact dropper on my Topstone lefty...... last week! This would have been super helpful. I used the included lever because I run a 1X so the left GRX lever doesn't move. I love mine. I did it because I ride some fairly aggressive terrain on the bike. Thanks for another excellent DIY tutorial😊 PS I installed the bushing and slid the cable into it on the post.

    • @DFroelich
      @DFroelich Před 3 lety +1

      There are 2 versions of the GRX 1X left lever in each tier. Check it out on page 14/15 here: bike.shimano.com/content/dam/productsite/shimano-northamerica/pdf/GRX%20DOC%20CONSUMER.pdf It sounds like cannandale used the first one (BL-RX810/BL-RX600) and niner uses the second (ST-RX810-LA/ST-RX600-LA). So, if you wanted to clean it up a bit, you could get the ST-RX810-LA and ditch the included lever.
      I'm a little bummer to read your post, since I have that lefty 3 on order and was thinking about adding a dropper as well. I was hoping for a clean install.

    • @sydfixesbikes
      @sydfixesbikes  Před 3 lety +1

      We did a custom build, so just ordered the left dropper lever, so not sure what Niner specs on the bike. But yeah, it's easy to swap the lever to the dropper post one if you want the integrated one (which is pretty fun 😉).

  • @i11horse
    @i11horse Před 3 lety +3

    Most posts with the cable head at the lever come with a little plastic guide to set the length of the exposed cable to the knarp. (Or bushing as you called it) KS suspension specifically has one. Also, when tightening the knarp, always do a 3mm Allen on one side and the 2.5mm on the other to make sure it’s fully tight. #1 problem we see in shops with that style of post.

    • @sebastianjost
      @sebastianjost Před 3 lety

      So can also just use a lever where you can clamp the cable. Then you can basically just install the cable and housing at the dropper post end and do all necessary adjustments at the lever.
      This is definitely the easiest way I know and pretty much idiot proof.
      This method also doesn't need the special end of the cable, so you really can't mess up.

    • @marcel6405
      @marcel6405 Před 2 lety

      Thanks, just saved my life! Had exactly this problem: everything was installed and ready to go (which was more difficult than expected 🙈) but after hitting the lever three times the cable slipped out of the knarp / bushing! Nexttime I will use a hex key on both sides!
      And yes, it would be much easier using a lever where the cable end is just clamped, but I like the clean look and comfortable acces, which the use of the GRX Lever provides (I have a 1x setup on my Gravel bike)… : -)

    @sebastianjost Před 3 lety +1

    I recommend making the housing a bit longer than you actually need. That way if you ever have new shoes or pedals and have to adjust you seat height, you can do so.
    I also highly recommend getting a lever which clamps the cable rather than one which accepts the small cylinder at one cable end.
    These levers work with both cable directions and make installation and adjustments much easier. If you only have the clamped end at the dropper post, you really can't do any adjustments later on without getting a new cable because the cable has to be cut the the exact right length.

      When we've run GRX Di2, we've just put a normal post in because we wanted the left side for the front shifter, but I guess you could do only the right-side shifter and have that control front and rear derailleur (which is how we set it up anyway) and keep your left side for the dropper...

    I just bought and installed a dropper post in my Fuse. I think it's important to note that not all droppers come with remotes. The TransX Skyline that I bought for my Fuse (it's a budget dropper, but it's also a really good one) did not come with a remote (probably part of what makes it budget). So I had to buy a remote separately. The dropper also does not come with a cable and housing, but the dropper remote did. Here's where my confusion hit. So I had misremembered that the remote I purchased was NOT a TransX, and I made the silly assumption that the bushing that came with the remote that hooks to the dropper would automatically just fit. It didn't. I came close to ruining my dropper because of that. The dropper DID come with a properly sized bushing, so I eventually got it installed properly. The cool thing is that the parts allowed for me to run the cable either from the remote to the dropper, or from the dropper to the remote. I think going from the dropper to the remote is easier, because it's easier to determine how much cable and housing you need.
    Question, at 7:32 you're worrying about that little tail sticking out of the bushing. Couldn't you just use a pair of straight wire cutters to trim that to (nearly) flush with the bushing?
    I hope that made sense and wasn't rambling.

    • @sydfixesbikes
      @sydfixesbikes  Před 3 lety +1

      We're the opposite, mountain bikers who think "why not put suspension on a road bike 🤔".
      Honestly though, it's an awesome bike! Makes gravel a lot more enjoyable (better than riding a full sus MTB on gravel to, because the suspension is specifically tuned for gravel)! Obviously doesn't make sense if you only ride pavement or care about weight, but if you want a bike that makes long gravel adventures more fun...

    I'm still not understanding why you have a suspension fork on a road bike let alone a dropper post. Just use an ultra-light hardtail for any race where you might have a drop where a suspension and a dropper post might be needed.

    • @sydfixesbikes
      @sydfixesbikes  Před 3 lety +1

      The suspension (front and rear) is specifically designed for washboard and small, repeating bumps and works much better on that stuff than a normal mountain bike. The dropper post we just wanted to try. Definitely not necessary, but fun on any kind of descent because it allows you to move the bike around more easily.
