What were they thinking of at that time? This truly is a time machine. I loved the music, the presentation, just amazing! Thank you for this.

Lot of comments on the shiny hair -- before the advent of hair care products like gel or mousse, the Japanese had used camelia japonica flower oil called "tsubaki" to keep their hair very neat and kempt (with the added benefit of being a natural moisturizer). Some print art and actors in period dramas would be seen dipping their fingers into a small pot of the oil and an errant strand of hair would be preened back into the original style to keep it off the silk kimonos and other garments. Nowadays you can still find jars of _tsubaki_ being sold in grocery stores and pharmacies throughout Japan and even here in the US at select retailers.

Not true at all. My mother and all of the women in our village used hot wax and this traditional way of hair care goes back 600 years. What you mentioned is very modern. Not traditional, so women in the early 19th century didn't use what you mentioned. If you lived here all your life you would know that.

Wonderful pictures of old Japan. And may modern times have conquered this country, there is still this pride of their own culture and identity,
