After receiving such a good feedback on two of our earlier videos on Victorian portraits, we wanted to bring you something even more unique today. We've gathered a collection of 19th-century portraits that appear to come to life as they glide across your screen. The portraits were given a quick restoration, colorization and some facial motion, using some of the latest tools in AI technology. I hope you find this presentation enjoyable, since it was a labour of love to create. As always, we value your opinions and comments, so please don't hold back. Let's get started!

I cannot explain the emotions that this brought over me. I began to tear up immediately. Knowing that these people are long gone...yet brought to life by someone years after their passing. They're being remembered in such a beautiful way. Seeing them fade in and out of life was haunting. This was absolutely powerful. Maybe I'm just in that mood today due to the weather but...I really felt impacted by this.

Had exactly the same thoughts and feelings just before seeing your comment. Made me think of , hopefully, many years from now when I will, to quote Billy Connolly, go for a wander and forget to come back, what will my future relations or others see and think when they see pictures of me when time has passed the same as it has from these people to us.

I can't fully describe the feeling I consistently had upon seeing the portrait return from the colorized animation to the original black and white. It's as if the person in the portrait said goodbye in a gentle manner and permanently and returned to their time in the past.

The first woman is absolutely beautiful. It’s amazing what you have done here. People, long forgotten, brought back to life for just enough time for me to feel engaged by their presence as if I knew them somehow, but no, they are 173 year old photos. Photos of people who’s memory is forgotten because everybody who knew and loved them is also long gone. This will be you and me one day, forgotten because everybody who loves us will also be long gone and forgotten. This kinda makes me want to enjoy my time here that little bit more. Our lives are literally a blip. The people in these photos had feelings, emotions, good days, bad days, jobs, favourite meals, pet hates, friends and places they loved to visit. They probably thought about what the world would be like in the year 2000, yet here we are in 2023, looking at their forgotten faces. It’s breathtaking. I love portraits like these. Keep up the good work

I don't know why, but I was brought to tears while watching this as if for a moment we observed exactly what the photographer did as they looked through the viewport on that day so many decades ago. These were real people who meant something to someone at some time. Even if we don't know them, and we don't know what type of person they were, we briefly were given the honor of standing in on this moment in their lives, and just for a few seconds, they mattered again to somebody. I wonder how much their spirits rejoice in you showing how they once lived. This is one of the most beautiful and honorable creations I've ever seen. Thank you and God bless!

That is why genealogy is so important. It brings us together, connects us to the past. Finding out stories that match the pictures are even better!
Imagine all the people through time, looking at you the way they were at the height of their youth and beauty.
It's such a touching thing to watch. As you witness the essence of life entering and then quickly exiting the beautiful faces of these long since departed fellow humans, it's kind of a bittersweet metaphor (and reminder) of just how fleeting life is for us here on earth.

All of those lovely people, who once existed with their hopes, dreams and lives to be lived. Long gone. How I would love to be able to talk to them. Many thanks for this, it is beautiful.
yea ... makes u feel like ur apart of something Universally large ... yet so small too... imagine us all long gone for hundreds of thousands of years... and an advanced race comes upon us ... how these seemingly innocent people chose to destroy themselves in the most violent means unimaginable and each one of us is apart of that and will someday soon join these images and be just a long lost mysterious face.... adding the blinks and subtle facial changes just makes it all that much more real and alive but again
Once these portraits are colorized and brought to life it shows how much more attractive they really were.
Especially the men
I was completely surprised by how emotional this made me. It brought the mortality of humankind into stark focus. One moment we are living a full, vibrant life and in the blink of an eye we're a faded photograph that may one day be labeled "unidentified woman." So much life captured in so brief a moment. Thank for the work this must have taken and for the deep mindfulness this has no doubt created in many besides myself.

Seeing these people move, blink, and even give a little smile really touched my heart. They were more than just photos, they were real people, with families and friends. At least for a moment here, we can see that and remember them.

So Beautiful and heart breaking. To see them in color and brought to life, it made them real. As soon as the pictures went back to black and white it was so sad because they seem to fade away like no one cared.
I just wonder what it could be the future of these persons and some other millions of humans from past times that already sleep on death. We will meet again? John 5:28,29.

You just want to reach out to them to tell them they are remembered and loved still. So beautiful.
I'm an extremely empathetic person and facial/body expression plays an important part on how a perceive others and the truths their lives hold. This video was so over powering with emotions I began sobbing. It was as someone had woken each person for just a small fraction of time to reveal the life they lived with just one expression. I saw happiness, hurt , pain, lies, determination, disappointment, joy every face showed for a moment the truth of each life. It was almost too much for me to witness but I could not stop watching and I could not stop crying. It was actually the beautiful pain of living of our truths even for just a moment.
I was a costume designer for a costume shop in Chico, CA and one day a young man walked in to see if I could make a Confederate uniform for him. He said he had collected the buttons and medals at re-enactment events and online. When he pulled out the photo to show me, I was speechless. The young man in the old photo looked like he could be this man’s twin! I worked with a tailor researching fabrics and techniques to create the most exact replica for him. I still remember him to this day.
Maybe he was a time traveler.
Such handsome people, beautifully brought back to life, as though their souls returned to this world for a fleeting moment. So well done.

It was quite moving, looking at all these faces from long ago. These were real people, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles. It was quite moving to see them come alive for a few seconds and then freeze back into the past, that one moment in time that is captured for us to view.
@@catsnpeacocks I do, too. And when they come into view, I talk to them (in my mind). I tell them I think they were beautiful in these photos. and hope they had a good and happy life during that time. Then I tell them I hope they are also finding a good life now. I am always so touched by them.
When I was a little kid, I met my great-grandmother. She was born just before 1900 and thus still in the Victorian era. I find it absolutely mind-boggling how much technology, culture, and even political maps have changed since she was a little kid herself... It goes to show that these portraits are not that far back in the grander scheme of things. Just imagine she met as a little girl a fossil of a relative and he would have still been of the Napoleonic era. Thus, she could have relayed things from the Napoleonic era directly to me. That's really crazy to think about.
When I see those photos, I wonder what they would have told me, if I could have spoken to them. Even the life of my grandfather (WWII-veteran) was so far removed from my own life that he might have come from a different continent.

This video is so melancholy. You see the photos become clear and lifelike, reminding us how alive they were. And then the photos fade back to still and weathered, reminding us that they are from time gone by and long dead.
My favorite was Johannes Brahms, who was a major influence on my composing and orchestrating style. It was like I was actually seeing this past master alive, and looking into his eyes! Now if only I could have shared conversation with him, and a few cold beers....sigh.... Peace! 🎼❤☮

This is incredibly powerful. As they fade back to the original you are hit by a deep sense of who they are being frozen back in time. Like for a moment they came back to life and you got to meet them. Then a sadness as you watch them return to death. Powerful and sad.

This was very moving and poignant. I realized I said a little greeting to each and every person that appeared, silently in my head. I can only hope and pray that they all had happy lives and it was a privilege to meet them, despite it being only a fleeting moment. For just a few brief seconds, it was possible to feel their presence and a sense of communication with a generation who were our great, great grandparents, but who we never knew. I found the experience quite moving and thought provoking. Thank you so much for sharing your labour of love!

Hauntingly, yes it is and in fact a bit to much for me as I found it to be more than a bit "creepy"! That however is just me and my perception but I would be interested to know if others find it the same, I would bet the number of us in such a group would be small. This is in no way meant to be disparaging or derogatory and in fact I applaud the effort and thank the creators for bringing this out for everyone to see. Still I would be less than honest if I said I didn't find it to be "creepy" almost to the point of chills!

I've watched this several times. Weird to say this, but when they go back to their original image it feels like you watch them pass on again. You are so happy to see them gain life that losing it again hurts.
there's something genuinely wrong with you.
the animation is the soulless part. check the skin tone... it's always too flat, and in several instances color wasn't even added, or with the last guy everything was just washed out in blue. then there's the constant blinking and disturbing attempts at simulating head movement. and every single one of them has blue eyes... even the black people.
seeing them fade back to the original should be a relief, because the animations are disturbing if you look closely.

I'm fascinated by the incredible talent and creativity evident in the fashion of that era, especially on the women.
What a beautiful haunting collection. Everything from the looks on their faces to the richness of the fabric of some of the clothing. Just an amazing job! I have a lump in my throat from just seeing into these peoples lives for just a moment. And just like that, I too will be here and then gone.
My mother just recently passed away at the age of 90 and one of these portraits looked so much like her when she was a young girl. I had to watch it a few times as it was almost like she was alive again. This touched my heart, thank you for this video.

This brought tears to my eyes. One I’ve never seen this done before, and two knowing they’re all long dead made me wonder who they are, but it also brought tears to my eyes thinking of their children, grandchildren and what good lives they had. And it also brought tears to my eyes because my late paternal grandfather was born in 1899 the last year of the 19th century and my maternal grandparents was born in 1900 and 1904 with my parents and uncle living through a lot of history born in 1921, 1927, 1931 that are now in history books taught in school. The Flapper era, gangsters people have heard about in their heyday, radio shows, the invention of sound in movies, the Great Depression, the first fireside chats etc. Makes one feel kind of antique.
I don't think I have ever seen a video on CZcams which has made me feel so many emotions. At first, the images coming to life piqued my curiosity and then quality of the restorations had me in awe. Then I began to wonder how you decided to portray the details of the portraits (i.e. hair color, skin tone, eye color, ect.). After a few few minutes of these musings, it hit me like a ton of bricks that I was missing the whole point of what you have done. As each portrait "came to life", I felt as though each PERSON in the photographs was reaching out 170 years into the future and saying "I was here...the same as you". As each of them faded back into their still image , I couldn't help but feel extremely sad about the lives that have passed before us and my own mortality.

This was exactly my emotion. The realization that they’ve been dead for 100 years hits hard. It’s almost like looking at a live person who got sent back in time. I feel like I fell in love with some of these people
This is one of the reasons why we have to take care of our planet and the future of humanity. The individual passes for the whole to continue. We are them and basically we felt what they felt. See that many of us felt exactly what you described, including me. So in a way I am one with you and you are one with me, as we are one with all of us, uniting the past, the present and, if any, the future.
My friend, the fear of death is something we all have, do you know what death actually is? Its wages, wages for our sins, you see we've all sinned against a rightoues God, and deserve punishment, but because God loved us so much He sent His Son to die instead and if you will believe in who Jesus is and what He did for you, and turn your heart away from sin and towards God (repent) you will be saved

I've read many reviews on this video comes closest to what I feel. It's profound. I can't make up my mind if it's beautiful in its demonstration that these were actually living humans, or if it's sad that their no longer with us, or if it's troubling, bordering on creepy. But it certainly has impact! The music, I think, is very appropriate. Amazing work.

No. They are indeed frozen, distant and lifeless...well unless they are in Heaven but that would only be their souls, for now, since their bodies (or what is left of 'em) are still, well, COLD as ice! All these folks did was to play with their pictures using modern technology and imagination and for I can see they're also playing with the emotions of most of you here. Boooohooo! If it's any consolation, we will also be cold, distant and DEAD in a few years as well, if not earlier, so...what's the big deal??!! Just make sure your relationship with God is in good shape. The rest is useless but if you folks want to cry...you're on your own pals!!!!! 😅

All these people lived their lives, died, and were long forgotten until now, given one last fleeting breath of life a century & a half later. This will be us one day, all of us. I don’t spook easily, but this was absolutely chilling, in a bittersweet way. What an unexpectedly powerful creation!
These are the most breathtaking portraits I've ever seen. These people transformed from a b&w image to a person one could speak to. I've never seen such a transition. I felt I wanted to touch their hands or cheeks. Thank you for taking the time to transform these images. It is magnificent!

I was not expecting to be brought to tears by a random click on a CZcams video. Seeing these folks 'brought back to life' for a moment was breathtaking. And to think, none of these people had even the slightest idea that such a thing would be happening to them so very far into the future as they were sitting there posing for their portraits. We tend to think of people from the distant past almost like a different species when in reality, they were the same as us; they worried about money, got butterflies over love and cried over loss. As a middle aged man with no children or family left, I figure that my many photos albums will probably just wind up in a landfill some day. But I hope that at least some images of me survive and are perhaps able to be 'brought back to life' for a brief moment in centuries to come, should humanity even survive that long.
*And may I add that the little dog at 6:00 really overwhelmed me with emotion. I know a very special small dog who could very well be that dog's great x12 grandson. The way people live and the technology they use may change over time but even in ancient times, dogs have always just been dogs - pure, innocent and loving. If you have the means in your life, then please adopt (don't shop) a dog from a shelter. In doing so, you will instantly become the best human being on Earth in someone's eyes. 🐕

Fun fact: the picture at 7:50 is historically significant. Robert Cornelius took the picture himself in 1839 - thereby creating what is widely regarded as the world's first-ever selfie.
I assume he used some kind of timer, since his arms were folded.
@@TheNoiseySpectator Due to the technology of the time, I believe he did it by starting off the exposure, running round to the front of the camera and posing for it, then he ran back round again to stop it. This was back when photographic plates took a few minutes to expose.
I see that the video description lists the names of the subjects, but this particular picture just had that extra interesting fact about it. I only learned it recently when I saw something about it on TV.

@Bullseye Not according to Wikipedia, but there are a lot of firsts here (earliest known photographic portrait of a human taken in the United States, for example). I didn't realise until now that the photographic plate was his invention.

The spark of life comes into their eyes. Some of them seem to look right at me. The ones who smile, even a little, seem to be saying; "I'm glad I got to see you, even this brief glimpse, through the veil of time!" I can't help but smile back and hope that I get to meet them again someday.

It’s amazing how familiar they look when colorised and animated.
This gives me a totally different picture of history. It helps me see that the biggest visible difference between the people of the past and the people I see today are the style of dress. It allows me to imagine people I know dressing exactly like this, as if they lived in that time, and that bridged the sea of difference I perceived between the people of the past and the present.

Absolutely, I felt exactly the same whilst I was watching it, history can feel like a fantasy some times but this really hits home that they were just us.

I think we tend to romanticise period pieces whether the early infancy of photography or some obscure, grainy video shot somewhere in a city. I think we tend to not realise people basically had one or two outfits, sanitary habits and clearly medical advances weren’t prevalent as today. Horse drawn carriages and streetcars for transportation and no air travel, telephones, or cell phones, and pre-automobile age.
Heart warming and bittersweet. I collect 1800s Union Cases, tintypes, daregotypes, as these show moments preserved that were special to someone at certain time. The beauty of bringing them back to life, lovely portraits that are over 100 years old, so they can be seen again in color is beyond what words can describe, the brief moment that they are in vibrant color and alive until they slowly go back to their silent sleep.

I haven't been a fan of most modern colorization, they end up looking like modern people in period costumes. However the way they are presented here is brilliant, they way they fade in and then back out of color as they scroll by is a masterpiece. It adds the emotion back in just before they fade away back into history.
A family photo album done in this way would be amazing! Thank you.

so what are people from the past supposed to look like? It's not like they would be grainy in real life just because they were born in the 1800s.
you're overselling it quite a bit. the transitions are often clumsy, the coloring is quite bizarre in multiple cases, and the motion of the faces is never matched in the hair despite the fact that since the hair is further from the point of rotation that any part of the face the hair should move more than the face does. also... everyone has blue eyes. even the last guy, but he's just washed out in a blue tone to hide it. wtf?
it's nice, but absolutely not a masterpiece.

This was surprisingly powerful. To realize that these people lived their lives so long ago and are now gone is troubling yet beautiful at the same time.
Even more amazing is that one day they will really return to life
My favourite is the man and his dog! How they could get the dog to sit still in that position for at least 15 minutes is admirable...
Never ceases to amaze me. Bring history to life, instead of lifeless black and white images, now just look like a present-day person.

Already as 6-years-old girl I did browse in the attic of my grandma. Old leather suitcases tempted me intensive. Photos, really old clothes, Hats, veils, gloves, handbags.. I couldn’t resist. With your video you made me feel like all the stuff is actually worn by those people on the pics. Magical!
It’s amazing when these faces come to life they look like the faces of the people we know and love today but they simply existed at a different time and are a distant memory. They were lucky enough to have been amongst the first generations to be immortalized in photographs.
Robert Cornelius at 7:49 was the first known selfie, he took a photo of himself in Philadelphia and had to stay perfectly still for some time to do it! This video is amazing, to see the subjects seem to come to life for just a few seconds then fade back to being frozen in time is nothing short of haunting.

I just randomly came across this and found it to be incredibly moving. I go into antique stores and vintage shops and I often see photos like these. I can’t help wondering about who these people were and think it's a shame they’re colorless, flat and often stern. What you’ve done is AMAZING and beautiful. Thank you.
Yes I always feel sad when I see those pictures in antique shops. Abandoned memories.
I think this is a common misconception due to the way they pose.
In fact, most of these people were very happy. The aristocracy was known for having lots of parties.
Those massive stately homes they all owned were party venues.
I'm sure their world was full of entertainment. They had money afterall.
My dad had gone to photography school, he was very artistic. He brought color to black and whites of my family and like all of you ,he did an amazing job on these pictures. Thak you for sharing.
My main thought - I wonder if they, like we so often do, felt as if they'd live forever when they were young. Great work!

There is something so magical and fascinating about seeing these natural beauties/faces. No filters or fake eyelashes or Botox. So interesting.
Just a touching reminder that these people lived out their lives, had experiences, families, loves, heartbreaks, and hopefully some happiness as well. It is nice that we had a brief moment to see how they really might have been as living, breathing humans.

This really touched me and found myself crying through most of it which surprised me. Lovely to see their humanity come to life and the realization that they were fully inhabited and full of their human experience when this moment in time was captured.

When they go color like they live once more for a few second like they once were at the time they tooke these pictures .
When they slowly go back to steel and black and white there is somthing peaceful and sad ...
I wished when i was younger if i could go back for one day to my childhood just for one day and i could be with my grandpatrents and how happy that would make me i thought ..
But from midday on i would cry my eyes out becouse that day will end .
What we have is memories and will keep them in the safest place whre they still a live or they just rest in eternal peace .

For those precious few seconds the colourised pictures come to life and they interact with us, it's incredibly moving.
What a stunningly beautiful video. This is going to sound weird but found myself saying hello and goodbye as each person came to life then returned to just their black and white image. How beautiful it would be if we could have a few fleeting seconds with our lost loved ones again. Bless them all.
Watching each of these photographs have a little bit of life in them was very interesting but more so looking at each one of these portraits invoked so many thoughts as to who these people might have been and what their lives were like and the fact that when these photos were taken they had no idea that so many years later in life millions of people would have the ability to look at their photos and watch them come to life, what they would think if they could have seen this.
This is the coolest thing I've seen on CZcams in a while....they look like modern day people playing dressup at the local themepark...kudos to the person/ppl who helped bring the photos to life.
I rather like this presentation format. The fade-in/fade-out gives the impression of a memory coming into focus, then fading away again.

I found this experience to be extremely moving for me it was as if this was the closest thing to Bringing someone back to life knowing they've been long gone it was very moving.

Beautiful, wondrous, mysterious and sad. I wonder who they were, what made them happy, what their lives were like. Looking at Victorian era photos I've always felt quite removed from the people; they seem so different. But watching the light and life flicker into their faces here I feel much closer. Thank you for this gift.

This film is a true work of art. Like so many others I found this to be incredibly moving. All these people have passed out of living memory and are brought to life again for a moment and then to see that life disappear from the photographs is incredibly haunting.
You sense something of their personality and intelligence and some are quite stunningly beautiful in full colour.
It is also very hard not to consider that we too will one day be just a forgotten image in a photograph.
