Fantastic episode Josh, I was always trying to figure out how to memorize tab and I noticed that I was learning a tune faster doing your live sessions with no tab than when I have just have tab and I'm reading it. It makes sense though it feels more natural when you are doing it by ear. All these principles make sense but never occurred to me as a system so I will be applying this tonight as I work on "Down on The Corner" I think the memorizing in chunks is a key tip here!
I used this same process to learn a song on guitar for a performance today and it worked like a charm no music or lyric sheets needed wish I would have known this 20 years ago !
This is gripping stuff thanks Josh. I love experimenting on myself with learning modalities. Interesting to me how much a mild sense of fear (of change, failure even during practice) strongly influence how we go about learning. I've learned enough things during my life to enjoy a few insights. All power to you!
i am new to clawhammer, only since Nov.2022. i have been learning songs through standard notation and or tabs, but i just memorize it. once i do, i do not need the tab. I fear this is not the best practice either as i learn it as written and i fear i will not be able to add embellishments on my own? maybe that comes with time? i do have an ear for the melody and i know when i hit the wrong note. I did subscribe to brainjo a short time but i quit as it seems like too much massive information. i watched a lot of the videos for beginners which helped. i am struggling to find one process to learning and stick with it. I am currently watching Brad Kolodner's videos and learning tunes and playing along with him which is helping as far as timing and rhythm. i do plan to go back to brainjo at some point as it is very well thought out. it has been pretty much impossible in my area to find a face to face banjo teacher. i am determined to learn and i do love playing the banjo.
Thanks Josh, excellent stuff. I have been using some of these processes, but you have just added some more possibilities to my learning process! 👍 Just an aside...is it harder for an "old dog to learn new tricks"? I know I get frustrated because I "should" be able to do stuff! 🤣🤣
