The story of the Pieta orchestra is impressive. But do we know for certain that ALL the orphans played in it? I'd expect at least some to be so hopeless they were quietly left out - like some monastic orders where the most unmusical monks refrain from singing (NB I don't remember where I heard this, not 100% certain it's true.) Bach said anyone who worked as hard as he did could do the same as he did. But nobody has - not even his sons.

Amazing. I am learning piano, guitar, bass and voice all this summer. It is helping with the cross over info. Also is good to learn piano as mother instrument while learning another one and then moving to another one along with piano next semester.

GREAT EXPLANATION /ADVICE I have been playing B-jo for almost 75 years. Currently, I play mostly a clawhammier-ish 'melodic' note-for-note', highly ornamented celtic type music. I almost exclusively use DOUBLE-C (Capo @+2 = for A or D ... aDADE). Double-C HAS to be the MOST versatile tuning overall .... especially if one plays a lot of 'up the neck' chordal forms, and with the SECOND STRING as the LEAD string .... as wasteful finger stretch in making chords is minimized. For the past ~25 years, I play mostly from the 5th or 7th positions/fret ...'on up', rarely fretting below the 5th or 7th fret ... and all the (unfretted/'opem') 4 strings below the 5th/7th fret will simply resonate automatically in perfect 'dynamic' harmony for that all-important celtic 'full house sound'.

I have been (melodic - 'blitzing' @ ~120 bpm) 'clawhammering' of celtic music for well over 70 years; and I'm still 'learning', especially the all-important INSTINCTIVE playing. For me, 1/2 to 'sometimes' ~1 hours ~per day is sufficient, so that that I maintain my instinctive MUSCLE MEMORY. Any amount over that amount results in accumulated 'bursitis'. FWIW - a severely worn-through fingernail takes about 4+ months to fully 'regrow'; so, I now use a soft brass, 4 winged, PRO-PIK on my strike finger, and regularly 'sand down' the built-up finger tip callouses on my 'up-the-neck' hand. Dont over-do; all things in moderation !!!!

I’m struggling to understand the 7th and 8th measure plucking. There are no indications that you use your thumb on the tab, nor use a hammer on. How do you play those measures? Particularly in the 8th measure the 5 of the D string.

I increased my clawhammer-ish speed by employing controlled arpeggioed triplets/doublets, etc. (~2-3X 'faster'); various types of pull offs; plus, abandoning the bumpity strum (too mechanically TIME consuming) and substituting with strictly 'melodic' technique. But, I prefer celtic (usually in A or D; thus, using the 'faster' 'double C tuning for less finger 'stretch') music which is played 'mostly' above the 5th position (fret) for economy of left hand movement. .... all accumulated over the past 70 years; and STILL learning, I now play 3 finger and 'tenor banjo' sounds etc., just as fast with a melodic clawhammer-ish technique (actually a downpicking two-finger technique) ... that includes ALL 'voices' - 1. lead, 2. second fiddle and 3. base ... imitating BANDS ... simultaneously and across all 5 strings for that celtic 'full house sound effect' at up to 120+ bpm. (let your EAR be the controlling factor). In my personal "above the 5th position (5th fret) technique", the SECOND string becomes the typical LEAD string!!!! Indeed, learning 'patterns' - so they become **'instinctive'** is 'key' for 'ear - hand' coordination across THE CHORD patterns; and then, varying 'the 3 voices' of the tune.

I know this is an old video, but maybe the comments are still being read. I'm having trouble with the "knocking" part. Keeping my had relaxed, it just goes "thump" or sometimes my nails just scratch the drump head. I can't seem to get much noise from the string when my finger actually hits the string. Which is another problem, I can't seem to hit a specific string with the knocking motion.

When stricking one string, how do you keep the thumb from sounding the 5th string? I’m not plucking down on it but I still touch it and it rings (quietly) but when playing faster you can definitely hear it. Should the thumb not really touch the 5th string when playing single notes?
