I am 75 years and trying to hold on to my cognitive skills. When I practice the banjo, and things magically turn from hard to easy, it is very reassuring. My brain still knows how to grow. So I often think of my banjo as a “fountain of youth”. Thanks to Brainjo for contributing to my healthspan.

Thanks so much for this comment. And you’re absolutely right about the brain brain being our fountain of youth. The fact that we can keep adding skills as long as we live is such a gift.

Well, I can only give the same advice as my old favorite Aunt gave me many, many years ago. At 76 I can assure you that the brain is the biggest muscle that must be exercised constantly and music learning with an instrument is one of the best exercises!!! Lifting that bar and practicing those chords! Works for me. I hope others realize it also!!!

You talk a lot of sense and make me realise that maybe, not only could I play the banjo but I could play it well 👍🏻

Absolutely!!. I am a bagpiper of 25+ years and I can generally sight read and get a pipe tune with little effort, even something fairly complex. In my banjo learning journey, not so much, but it has been much less time than my bagpiping. Thanks Josh for an informative session.

So you could say that "talent" is skills we didn't know we had developed until we needed them, enabling you to skip over the introductory steps.

It's no harder than computer programming. It just takes concentration and practice.
