Slide-out Truck Storage Box - How to Make a Vehicle Storage System
Vložit
- čas přidán 13. 02. 2021
- Today I'm building a slide-out truck storage box for the area under the rear seat of my truck (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500). In the video I'll show how I built the framework to fit in the under seat space, installed drawer slides, added handles and locking hardware, trimmed with aluminum, and tour what I will be storing in the box for general and emergency vehicle use.
And while I built this storage system for a truck, the general techniques can be applied to any vehicle. A little organization will not only keep your vehicle more tidy, but also enable you to keep some road side emergency supplies available in the event that you need them!
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!
-Joe

Ha! I have an ever growing collection of Homesteadonomics pants. 😆
One thing I appreciate about your channel is not just the quality of the builds, but also the dedication to organization. It's a constant struggle, but something I'm working toward.
I’d imagine after manually moving literally tons and tons and tons of earth by hand you’ve got more than your fair share of these kinda pants😂
You sir, are a paragon of helpfulness. Thank you for all your help inspiring projects throughout the year. My mental health has been the better for it.
So true. Joe is a good dude.
Thank you very much Tristan🙏. If these projects and videos inspire and help in any way that is just awesome to hear! Thank you👍😀🙏
@@homesteadonomics
This is actually the first time a creator has gotten back to me. Thanks good sir! Hope you have a wonderful day.
I used to attend several conferences each year for work and at each one I would get a soft-sided 'briefcase'. I had about 10 or so of these and used some of them to store 'necessaries' for all our cars. Basic first aid, fuses for each car, multi-screwdriver, pliers, adjustable wrench, small knife, paracord, jumper cables, zip ties, small can WD40, gorilla tape, old bathroom rug for putting on ground and a few other things. Nothing really cost that much except I did get higher grade jumper cables. The bags fit nicely in the trunk and because they were soft-sided, they didn't roll or slide at all and were very portable. There were some other small things but I always felt that no matter what might happen, there was something that could help.
I know those type of cases you’re talking about. I think you used them perfectly too! And out of all of your list...which is awesome... the bath mat is soo genius! I hadn’t even thought about it but sure makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the idea Michael!
Such a sick build! That extra step of cutting off the corners was well worth it, looks and I imagine will be function even better!
Yeah! I’m really happy that i made those into 45’s. Much better thank that 90 that just crept out a bit too much😀👍
I have a feeling you made this because, like myself, you found it expensive to buy under seat storage. It seems whenever we can build something it’s cheaper, far more heavy duty, and meets our needs with little to no wasted space. Great build! You’ve successfully inspired me to build one myself
Last video...you were walking around looking at rocks, cant compete with that 😀
There will be more of those types to come! Planning my AZT hike soon🤞😀
Nice. I enjoy it when you trim your projects with aluminum.
It’s gotta be an addiction at this point 😂
Nice job. Glad there are OCD friends like you out here to inspire perfection in projects like this. Thanks!!👍
Nice Work! I think Trucks like this should have come with storage like this from the factory!
Little Improvement idea: line the inside with some vehicle carpet and since the rest of the truck floor is a rubber, maybe put a coat of bedliner or something on the outside! It would make it look more stealth and with the carpet you wouldn't have to worry about something rattling around.
Yeah I think the liner would be a nice touch. Or maybe a gray paint...haha.... I love my gray. As for the carpet... I do plan to put some of the foam liners in the bottom to help with rattling. 😀👍
I love how clean your work turns out. Great job!
9:20 always love it when the Chewbacca tool comes out
Haha... I haven’t heard it called that before... but it does have that same kinda sound for sure!
Oh man! This is awesome!!!
Awesome build idea. I don't have a truck with 4 door but when I do this will be a great addition that's fun to build. The metal trim makes it look bough not built.
Thank you!
especially liked the space saving alluminum sides on the drawers.
Well done. I'm going to use that aluminum drawer side idea. It saves space and weight. Thanks for posting.
As always great! God bless thanks for taking the time for the rest of us, From my wife and I from Las Vegas
Very nicely implemented storage solution. I've thought about adding storage like this to our travel trailer passthrough compartment.
Thanks Tim! I think something like this would be great in a compartment like that😀👍
What a timely video. I've been thinking of doing the same for my pickup. Too many tools and no matter what I try, they're always disorganized. Thanks for posting this!
Thanks for checking it out! It’s a very rewarding project... fun to design and sure does tidy up the stuff under the seat😀👍
Outstanding craftsmanship!!! The ideas pretty awesome too!!
I was just thinking this morning I hadn’t seen a video from ya. Good timing. I also just bought an 8 year old crew cab, but mines and F250. Mine came with a plastic insert that locks, but I much prefer the idea of a slide out drawer. Might have to make something like this!
Well congrats on your new truck as well! Ours are about the same age then!
Fine craftsmanship as usual👍👊🇺🇸
Thank you Jim!
Excellent idea! Love it !
Thanks!
Impressive! Love the clean craftsmanship!
Too cool the pickup! Great!
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing.
As always good to see your blog, all the creative work you do, I feel like I have not seen much of your blogs for sometime, or I may have missed them, as I work log hours now. Keep up the good work and see you on the next one, be safe and bye for now.
Thank you! Yes, I have not been able to put out as many videos recently because of my day job. But I should have some smaller projects coming up soon😀👍
LOVED the fashion show!
Haha... thank you Lois!
That’s Awesome!!!!!!! Great idea
Thanks for checking it out Dennis!
This was a really innovative project. Loved the presentation of the build. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Nice truck and a cool build. I really like how your builds are always so pragmatic; things that are so useful, this makes great sense to me.
Thanks Raynola! You know I like functional!! Well, except for my aluminum trim ‘bling’ may not be all that functional😂. But it does look good!
Very nice. I Ryobi battery charging system on an AC Inverter would be a nice addition.
Most brands offer a 12v charger!
Outstanding concept!
Thank you!
Vinyl floors = MY KIND OF TRUCK!!
Yep! We were looking for a ‘work truck’ with vinyl seats and floors. Only thing I kinda wanted that didn’t get was crank windows...haha...I like simple😀👍
@@homesteadonomics I had a '97 Chevy W/T years ago. It had crank windows and a huge manual shifter on the vinyl floor.
Very practical and good use of space . And always this successful mixture of wood and aluminum 👍
Maybe you should add a little aluminum to your pants 😁
Haha.... Aluminum pants patch😂
wow fantastic! 🆗✅🏆 nice truck!
Thanks!
I finally got my 2012 Silverado, gonna make one like I said I would hahaha thanks for the video!
This is a great video, thank you!
Thank you Melissa!
Nice tool box that gave me some ideas for my 07 2500HD Duramax 👍👊
Clever idea. I might have trimmed it in a matching carpet it dark colour just to make it blend in instead of stand out. But each to their own.
Yes a darker paint or covering would definitely finish it up a bit more. Thanks for watching 🙏😀
More truck content, please!!!
Well I can say that there will be at least 2-3 more vids I can think of regarding mods on this truck. Stay tuned😀👍
Nice build Joe! Any time I complete a project here on the farm, I fret over the imperfections. My wife tells me it's fine. Your work always carries the look of professionalism.
Haha.... yep we see those little imperfections and nobody else even notices them for the most part😂
That was amazing. Great job
Nice 👍
Thanks for some ideas. Perfect for straps and emergency gear.
Time for a brake, vise or bench top. 👍
I have been wanting to make a brake for sometime😀👍
Nice Job
Looks great
Thanks John!
You are a wisard with anything you put your hands to Awesome ☺👍👊
I don’t even own a truck and I like it. 🫡
Nice build!
Nicely made.
Thank you John!
I love it, this is an awesome build.
Thank you!
Very nice design! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Don!
Beautiful build!
Thank you Mike!
Nice project.
Thanks!
Nice job as always! 👍
Thanks Rick!
Hello from Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Thanks for sharing your great video’s please keep them coming.
Sweet .
Man Joe, you always come up with some good ideas. I hope this idea doesn't get stolen by some company and makes millions...lol As always, love your aluminum finishing touches... Keep them coming! 👍👍
Tks man, nice project,i have to do the same type of storage for my truck,👍🏻
Great video. I look forward to more truck videos and videos on your homestead.
Thank you!
Again, a very nice, practical and thoughtful build, in the typical homesteadaluminics style :-)
Unfortunately, i have no vehicle, that can use such a thing :-(
Thanks for sharing and cheers from Bulgaria
Homsteadaluminomics style!!!! I love it!!😂👍
Another insightful build. Was surprised that you added wood to the 45° corners; when you were cutting the aluminum sheet I expected you to wrap the side to front with a curve. Wishing you and your family a blessed new year filled with peace, prosperity, health and happiness. Peace brother.
Well, you’re thinking was right! I actually did think that at first.... but then I just kinda liked doing the angle thing.... for aesthetics, I think🤔😂.... haha.... I’m not even sure half the time🤪
And wishing you and your family all the best as well!!
Clean work , nice truck ,
Thank you!
Cool build and video. My Chevy had a du-ha storage system I bought used. I need this for my Ford.
Another awesome build, you are so inspiring to us! It is nice to see you approaching half a million subscribers! Well deserved. I hope you and your family are safe and well!
Thanks Andy! I really appreciate that! We are doing well and I hope you and your family are as well!
nice work Joe, like the new truck. just waiting to see the new aluminum trim around the side steps
Nice!
Thanks John!
Nice build
Thank you!
Thanks to you for upload!
I like this, I really like this!!! 😁👍
Thank you!
Congrats on the new ride!
Thanks Jake! If our budget was a bit bigger I woulda tried to snatch up your truck when you sold it! It was super clean and I know your the type of guy that treats his stuff well!
Nice concept.
Thanks!
That’s great, I have an older Silverado (2000) I’m gonna try to create something similar, beautiful truck btw
Excellent video! As usual, but great project.
Glad you liked it Mark! 😀👍
Great idea! Thanks for sharing! I thought i subscribed long ago, but took care of that right now! Good to see what you are up to! Best to the family! :)
Thanks for checking it out and subbing! 😀🙏
Awesome work! I’ve been looking forward to this build, and was not disappointed. You may consider making a spot for your lug-specific socket next to your impact wrench for quick access. I will definitely consider some of these ideas for my F150! Cheers!
You know what.... I think that’s an even better option. Especially since there is unused space around it too😀👍
you cracked me up with the get yours today and you'll have pants just like it after so many work hours 😂 I think leather patching would work well myself 👍
Haha.... I kept thinking.... this video is gonna be really boring🤔. So I figured a ‘infomercial’ ad would be helpful😂
It was EXtremely interesting!!👏 You are so skilled!! Do you ever sell your building skills or do you confine your talents to you and your family’s needs? Love to watch whatever you’re building!
Great ideas like always. I'm local, SV area...been watching for 5 years or more. Glad to see your channel grow continuously with more great valuable content. No end to the possibilities to improve our life/environment. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Bruce, I am just 2 miles outside of Tombstone off of Charleston road.
Thanks Bruce! I was just in your neck of the woods about 3 weeks ago when I bought that truck. Love the Sierra Vista area! Almost the perfect mix of climate too!
Great video I loved it Thank you
Best regards
Samir from Oman
Thank you! Great to hear from Oman 🇴🇲😀👍
Well played. Let’s get outside more .
Thank you!
Cool build. Hope you and the family are doing well.
Hey Wayne! Yes, we are doing well as can be. Hope you guys are doing well out there as well!
@@homesteadonomics ya except we are expected to go below 0 for the first time since 1899. It is cold and snowing right now. May not be cold for people used to this but when the average temperature for this time of year is 60 degrees-3 sucks.
Looks good,nggank you
Thanks for checking it out!
Wow...this is an awesome build Joe!
Doing the 45 degree front corners really works well.
Well...we know that Joe wasn't replaced with a pod person during his long absence...he used aluminium to trim it all out :)
@5:40 & 14:32 Just remember to leave access to the jack when you do make more boxes in the back.
Pod person😂. That made me laugh out loud Gregory!!! And yes, I will definitively make sure the Jack is accessible😀👍
Nice
I have some custom air conditioned pants like that and I love 'em!
Ha, ha! 300 hours of hard work!! I love it. I'm also inspired to maybe make something storage-wise for Subi.
Bring Subi down and we’ll build something custom for her! We could even paint it or add some vinyl to it so it blends in a bit better!
We could make her a Subaru version of Tristan’s RAV4 on @SUVRVing
@@homesteadonomics Ok, let's do it, but I'm not ready to do a buildout like Tristan's...yet.
You've inspired me to build a custom storage container under the back seat of my 2020 super cab F150. My doors are suicide and open all the way against the bed pf the truck so I'll be able to incorporate complete drawers on each side.
I really like the thin aluminum sides and edging. I think I'll paint mine storage black so that it blends in. But the wood look is cool to.
Awesome! I think those fully opening doors will make for a way more convenient system with full slideouts😀👍
Nice build. Although I'd line each compartment and drawer with some kind of carpet or matting to prevent alot of rattling noise when driving on rough terrain
This has got to be the best video you have ever made (in the last 30 days)! Great use of space. I was wondering if you considered pop rivets on the slide out drawers or would they not have been strong enough. Looking forward to what ever you do to the “new” truck. Let you wife know that your You Tube family would love to see a truck bed camper. Thanks for sharing!
Haha.... I agree! Without a doubt the best in the last 30 days... and maybe worst too😂
As for pop rivets, I think they’d be plenty strong and lower profile too. But I don’t have the rivet setter... but perhaps it might be worth getting one soon. Wouldn’t be too hard to switch em out either.
And the truck camper.... that one excites me a lot!!! But my wife says I’ve got a lot of things that need to get checked off the TO DO list😬😂
With the draw slides, you might like to think about changing out the nuts for the slide to what are known as nutserts or rivnuts, you can then cut your machine screws down so they don't protrude from the nut giving you a minor amount more room and less chance of taking skin off when you reach in
Those rivnuts are really cool! My neighbor has used them for his RV rebuild. But I am also thinking of rivets too👍😀
Good video. I'm going to do the same thing.
Great video I got the over priced du-ha under seat box, I wish I had you're box.
Thanks Daniel! Those du-ha systems look pretty cool. I checked out some pics.... but I can see they aren’t cheap by any means
Great video Joe, as always! You should check out the DiamondBack truck cover. I know it's expensive, but it's sooo dang versatile and useful! It's like having a weather tight truck bed with a flat bed on top!
Thanks Bob! I’m gonna check out that cover right now😀👍
Consider a front square receiver as well. Good for bikes, platform, or removable winch. 👍
That’s a great idea! Especially for the removable winch option too!
The pants 👖 LOL good one
😉👍
Very well done!
Looks like that space behind/underneath could accommodate a tow rope or strap as well.
Ya' never know... ;^)
Yep, tow strap will be added😀👍
Really nice and really like the idea for the rest of the space between the seat brackets that you plan on using and then that going to leave you a skinny slot between the two and that looks to me like the perfect size slot to put a hunting rifle and maybe even a shotgun for smaller game ..... just a thought for you though
I am amazed at how talented you are! In all my youtube viewings, you are the first , that I remember, to mention a right angle drill. You KNOW I must have one (or two, because often I buy in pairs)!! haha I enjoy your presentations!!
Thank you so much Jimmy! 😀🙏 But you gotta remember that I just get to cut out all of the mistakes I make in the editing process 😂. And yes, right angle drills aren’t something we think of until we need them!!
Fantastic job. Now you need to install charging cords/plugins.
also install covers on your boxes for increased security!
Thanks! Not sure if I will add a charging plug but it’s not a bad idea😀👍
We always enjoy watching your video's. I found your channel when looking to set up a sea container workshop when you first got them. You enspired me so much that not long after I purchased a welder, plasma cutter more wood tools... well let's just say the 40 feet sea container is preaty well set up.
Finally with a help of our freind we just started our Expedition Overland Flatbed Truck Camper build. The tools are begining to get a workout. Next up learning out to use my Aluminum spool gun on the welder. Can't wait, love learning!
Keep up the great content. As you always say "It's GOOD!"
PS How do we get the Designer addition workman's? Thank you for your content!
YES BUILD THE TRUCK CAMPER..Mark (& Teresa)
That sounds awesome! Just checked out your channel and subbed. Will check out some this weekend😀👍
@@homesteadonomics Thank you so much for your reply and subscribing to our channel. What an honor! We have been working to build good content in last 4 months with this channel (our other channels are listed on the "about".ie RockinWalls. One last note, I've always enjoyed your filming format.. starting with the finished project first...Mark (& Teresa)
Very cool storage , I have been looking for an idea for my F-150 , it looks like my 2010 F-150 has more leg room but not the area behind ware your storage box is at . Thanks for the ideas
Thanks! Yep, the leg room isn’t all that huge in this seat area.... kinda odd that it has all that weird space behind the seat area😂
