- Recently got a silverado crew cab pickup and needed a simple way to organize the items under the back bench. This quick build uses a few strips of kerf bent plywood to make a elegant and streamlined storage solution.

It's great to show the process and what you do when come up against an issue that you have to fix. I built one like that but I put a bottom on mine .. Thinking might have been better without a bottom
Awesome project, Tyler, nice job. This is going on my list of things to build (once kids are out of car-seats preventing seats from folding up). Thanks for the video!
Very well done! I never knew you could bend wood that way, it was magic! Thank you.
Kerfing is a super awesome process, I used it on some end tables recently and love the look. Nice work man!
Those turned out great and were a good reminder for this project!
I dig it. Going out to see if I have room to do this for my Tundra.
Looks great Ty, as well as your new ride. Have a great weekend
Thanks Roy!!
I used to make a ton of subwoofer enclosures in a similar manner for under the rear seats of trucks similar to that. Looks great man, high five!
Great job Tyler! Looks like it was from the factory.
Thanks for sharing
I did a similar box for subs in my Ram but I used fiberglass resin in the curved corners for strength. My backseat is a true bench not separated and I built top and bottom. I have a toolbox in the bed so storage wasn't as necessary. I like theater sound when we go to the drive in lol
Great setup you got there!! Thanks for another great video! 👍
Great idea for some quick storage! Thanks.
Outstanding! Really nice looking addition to your pickup!
Turned out awesome; great job Tyler!
That was supper slick! Love the use of multiple kerfs for bending, and the black color makes it look almost factory installed.
It did set in there real nice! Thanks for watching Michael!
Pretty cool. The bend was awesome.
Nice! I might try this for my Tundra.
This weekend I will do one for my F-150 super crew cab, nice worktable
looks great Tyler. consider covering it with indoor/outdoor carpet and spray adhesive. also you may want to fasten it with some type of quick release latch so it doesn't shift forward.
Came out great. Love the bowtie too!!
Love the sound of excitement when you fit it in there for the first time!
Usually doesn't work out so well! Thanks for watching!
I loved my Silverado.......when it was not in the shop. No knock on GM, I just got a lemon. Now I love my Rubicon every day :)
Man...nice job. Some carpet rap would make that look like a factory install.
Thats a great idea. My truck , like many, serves dual purpose, work and pleasure. I'm selling my dedicated work truck so my main truck will do both. I'm looking for ways to make it more functional and easy to unload my tools for weekend excursions. Thanks for the idea.
Awesome video, I have an extra cab Sierra with stuff rolling around on the floor, perfect fix - next weekends project !!!! Loving the new shop ??
Much respect to your skill, smarts and craftsmanship. If it needs built, improved, altered or fabricated, I'm all in!! Thanks for the vid -and nice work, my fellow maker!
Great Video Tyler !
Nicely done!!!👍👍👍
You used radius to find outside arc length so you knew the total distance to kerf. If you substitute material thickness for radius in those calculations and then divide by blade kerf, you'll know how many cuts to make so that they close up on the inside. You just evenly space that number of cuts over the original distance to get a smooth radius. Once you find how many cuts you need, it will be a constant for any material of that thickness. The only variable is spacing, which determines radius of the bend.
Wasn't knocking what you did. Just wanted to share something from my past experiences.

Good food for thought!
Pretty inspiring work man, great job
great job (again)!!
Dude, sweet 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cool project, just a couple of thoughts for you on it, instead of spackle I would used thickened epoxy to fill the kerfs, this will actually be structural and will give the plywood the same strength it had before being cut. The other is I would get some rubber mat and cut it to fit in the bottom of the box so all of your gear doesn't wear holes in the carpet, or make it dirty. If a guy really wanted to go above and beyond you could make a solid bottom for the box by covering your floor in visqueen and masking tape, waxing it and coating it with mold release, then laying up a couple of layers of fiberglass, then build the box off of that.
JUST MAKE SURE YOU MASK EVERYTHING!!!
Good job i love it
nice job Tyler always rewarding to complete a project that we started and didn't know how it was going to turn out....
This one worked out great on the first try! Thanks for watching Mike.
Nice job!!!
Loved my 06 expedition, but the cam phase style that is in all double valve ford truck motors got worse and at 75000 mmile it lost 2 cylinders and valves. Choked and died on our cross country trip pulling our casita trailer. So in oregon i bought a silverado, nicest truck ive had.
Nice one Tyler.
Nice, Tyler! Nice ride!
Joshua Luther I
Amazing!!
Nice job and awesome project idea. I need that.
It's pretty nice!!
I agree with Rogue. But along with a parge of bondo, I'd apply over some fiberglass mesh and resin/epoxy. Could the rear of the box extend farther to the back?
I like truck build videos.
2 other ways to do this would be soaking 1/8 mdf and dry clamping then gluing or finding bending poplar plywood. I asked my local wood dealer for bending plywood and the look he gave me was priceless, so you just use what ya got.
That was a smart build Tyler, just one point to suggest on fixing that unit/box at floor - that shall help to avoid sliding and bothering with seated passenger ;)
Really impressed Whit how made the bend
Only things I would change would be: 1.) Epoxy instead of spackle. 2.) Cover it with some carpet to match the interior.
All in all, it's a great project, Tyler. Well figured out and well executed.
I got a $10 plastic rifle case at Walmart and it has two pieces of foam in it , no rattling !
So my question would be how do you calculate where to start and finish the cuts for the bend?
HEY TYLER WHAT YEAR IS YOUR TRUCK. I JUST GOT A 2018 I GUESS THESES MEASUREMENTS WOULD WORK.
looks good! do you think if you hit the brakes the weight will shift and push the whole thing forward? I wonder if you could attach it to the floor somehow
Great idea love the rounded corners going to use that in an up coming project. Not have a bottom is was very clever. 👍👍👍
Just picked up a newer F-150 for myself recently and the prices that they want for these under-seat boxes is absolutely ridiculous. Love the kerf cut method to create a much cleaner finish to the project. I'll definitely be running with this idea for a box of my own!
PS: How has the spackle held up with all of the vibrations over the last couple years?
Great project Tyler. Do you need to anchor the whole assembly? Do you get any shifting on a hard brake?
now is thare more storge space behind the back rests ? for odd stuff ? like tools ,first add kit ,kids stuff, ex bedding ,over night bag,drinks- foods-snacks junk foods, flash lites and more?
Good place to add some subs and an amp
Better believe it!
LOL
I built a sub box like that for my brothers truck and had it come in to account for the center seat being slightly in from the outside two. Looks good though.
Great idea, you could set up a business just building and selling these!
What year? I've been thinking of doing the same to my Silverado.
Tyler very fantastic From sardinya Italy.
Great job. Looks great and super functional.
Awesome build. Only suggestion I would make is possibly adding a few strips of Velcro to the bottom edge of the box. Just adds extra security preventing the whole assembly from sliding forward.
The friction between the rough edge of the plywood and the carpet will probably be just fine but I like the Velcro idea. Thanks!
I think a stronger solution for the rounded corner would be to soak the wood for a week and bend it. I didn't want to wait so I just did 2 joints of roughly 135 degrees and it contours with the seat nicely. I reinforced the joints with brackets so its plenty strong. Additionally, because mine is an F150, I didn't have to d any contour cuts. Either way, nice job, it looks great.
Looks awesome, but now everything will slide forward all together. Lol Great video!
2:03...Man that miter station is looking sweet.
Tony bp.
Ty, Looks greats. Question - did you add glue to the kerfs to give it some strength? Do you if that is a standard practice. Just wondering how to deal with something like that so it doesn't break.
I originally had bondo in my hand to fill them and that would be the ideal option.....went with spackle so I wouldn't be as high as a kite in the shop.
Body filler, rather than spackle, would add a little strength back to those radiused corners.
My Dodge came with under the back seat storage
you should sell your design in amazon for different cars
So did you attach it in any way or does it just use the seat to hold it in place?
What's stopping the whole box from sliding forward when you apply the breaks?
G.M. sells one that has a bracket that connects to the seat bolts.
would be ease to make a bracket that does the same thing if not already done.
JCassidy3383 I'd be more concerned about forward movement under action of the brakes.
@@brabhamfreaman166 & take out someones ankles :-0
Do you have the measurements/dimensions for underneath the seat?
How much is it for you to build one for me on 2013 Chevy Silverado slt 1500
Hey Tyler, I'm considering building your flip top tool wall workstation. I noticed even though you built it over 15 months ago, you have not added any more tools to it. Is there something not as functional about as you thought it would be? Does the flip top need to be longer? If not, it seems like a huge waste of space for something that was supposed to save you space. Just wanted to make sure it's not something you regretted before I make it.
No regrets, simply have not needed the tools that I plan to put on there yet. One day....definitely not going to get rid of it!
awesome idea you have why did gm did that in the first place
forgot they do not make mistakes and when you dealing on a gm that what they do think and no way they will change how think think and treat you its what they have it them it over cost over expense what they sell
Great idea Tyler, looks good. On thing I noticed at the end though -- that portion that sticks out past the center seat looks like it could scrape or cut tiny legs. It may not be a bad idea to give a 1/4" round over on that part.
8:20 Did you lose your hat? Great project. Keep being awesome
Pickup some 25 pound Velcro to hold down storage box to carpet so the whole box doesn't slide forward.
You should have moved the middle section in, it is OK for you but a little one sitting on the middle seat will catch their legs on the extended part. any build to tidy areas under seats and in boots is great.
you need to show that to Chevrolet ....... and chevrolet need to thank you and give you Award
Wouldn't that be nice! Thanks for watching.
What year truck is that?
What year is your truck?
Chevy Truck = - 50 points
Ridgid Tools = + 51 points. :D
Cheers! Chris
+CrossWood Oh common! At least I am up one!
Why would you take some glue and some fabric and reinforce the area where you cut out so you can bend it seems to me that be a good way to beef up that section which has to be very weak right now call it Hillbilly fiberglass
Good idea, but a cardboard template transferred to plywood would eliminate the calculations and recutting. I am pretty good with math and appreciate the planning process you did, but a template would have been far simpler. I also agree with other comments on the use of spackling, because that radius is gonna see some abuse and vibration.
You forgot to put your hat on at the end of the video. I didn't know you had hair. Lol
Bench is to Tyler as crotch is to Matt.
Do you have the dimensions for this ?
I've got close to the same truck, can you make me one? Let me know when it's done, and i'll come fetch it.
+GuysWoodshop Of you're coming up I'll make you one!!
Same technique can be used for subwoofer box...... mixing wood glue and saw dust is better to fill kerf area and have stronger tho. Truckbed liner will make painting turn out a little more even also. But it is a chevy so who cares🤪
Bench! :-)
Those rounded corners are now only one ply thick and could get damaged from feet or tools banging them from the inside. Spackle will not add any strength. I'm thinking something like bondo would have been a better filler.
Rogue Cthulhu or liquid nails I agree at some point those corners may fail but nice job anyway
Rogue Cthulhu I thought the same thing, like body filler of some sort. Not sparkle, just the vibrations alone will crack it in time.
Rogue Cthulhu I agree Bondo with the fiberglass would be better than spackle.
Make a filler out of screened sawdust and wood glue. Fill kerfs before bending.
You need a track saw
But Tyler that's where your bass speakers go.....lol
Inventive stuff Tyler. Love it.
The idea is great but in my opinion it lacks safety when braking, perhaps you should think about how to lock it to the bottom of the truck so you can not move.
buy a truck tool box. works great
Nice job, Tyler! Even if it is for a Chevy:)
You mean you got a Silveraydo! lol
show
I like what you do but a professional opinion fill them kerfs with glue not sparkle glue is stronger then wood
What is with the subtitle 1) Bench 2) Bench thing? Up to about 11 ?!
