  • Organized modular tool and hardware storage in the back of my work vehicle.
    Trying to find something in a unorganized environment is always a pain, so i had to come up with a better solution.
    This modular solution fits my needs perfectly, because each tool box can be removed and these box's are stack-able so you can always add more box's on top as you would need more storage.
    Future upgrade possibilities include building the frame up so you can have a big flat drawer on top or even another set of these slides with tool box's.

    The BEST DIY sliding truck bed on CZcams hands down. I've been looking for a commercial product that integrates modular tool boxes with a sliding bed and they don't exist. As far as I know, you are the only person to have successfully produced one. Also many of the commercial bed slides are about 4" tall thereby wasting a lot of space. That is their biggest drawback aside from price with many products > $1000 usd. Your 'split bed' idea is also unique, though having a larger slide out floor would allow me to store my collapsable table saw and mitre box. Adding a handle that allows the unit to lock in position might be cool. Overall, very well done indeed.

    • @cooksy2705
      @cooksy2705 Před 3 lety

      For more context, Dewalt (and others) make a stackable tool box/organizer whereby all the boxes can 'click' together on a standup, roll-away unit with large wheels and a handle. It would be great, for instance, if there were such a device that allowed you to, say, remove the tool boxes from the sliding bed and stack them together on a roller. Sooooo truck bed to roll-away kinda thingie. LOL.

    This is crazy man!!! I bought my truck last spring and went on the hunt to find a decent way to build a slide but only found ones that would fall apart in short order the way I use my truck so for the past 6 months I’ve been planning and gathering materials because I’m doing it on a limited budget but I started building it a month ago and worked on it again yesterday trying to finish cutting the last couple pieces and welding them up today.
    Our designs are very, very similar buddy. I’ve been worried about how it was gonna work cause a couple guys said it won’t work like that but I knew better. Yours looks like it’s working well so mine should also. I did see the other comment bout adding a few more bearings so I may try that and will let you know if it works.
    I appreciate your videos and hope you put more out, take care!!

    • @thewoodenfactor9941
      @thewoodenfactor9941  Před 5 lety

      Hi Don.
      Thanks for the awesome comment. Nice to hear from someone else also building the same thing. Would love to see how yours turns out!
      Mine is still working perfectly. Haven’t gotten to adding a few extra bearings yet, but my load doesn’t change much so it hasn’t really been an issue yet.
      Maybe just consider the amount of weight you’ll have on the front of the drawer when fully pulled out. You might start feeling a bit of flex in the frame, this will mainly depend on the stock you’re using for the drawer runner. Mine was fairly thin to try and save on weight. This doesn’t affect me at all though because in my specific setup it rests on the tailgate if I ever need to bring it out that far.
      I realized the best part this past weekend when I needed to take it out and it was only 2 screws, that’s it.
      Hope you have an awesome time building yours!
      Cheers

    BTW: I don't know if it's a generic name or the name of a specific brand, but I've always known those threaded inserts as a "nut-sert". (Not sure how that would actually be spelled, but ya, a nutsert. (Because you're basically inserting a nut into the metal panel.)

    Hey guy.First thing, great job u did. I really like the simplicity and tightness of the ladder rack as well. Questions - did i miss how you secured it so it doesnt pull all the way out? What about that flex factor when extending it past that certain point, where it looks like it might be dragging on the tailgate? How does that affect it? Enough that u did something about it? Did u make a platform on top of these? If so, did u post a video on it? As time went on, what have you found that worked out very well, and in opposition, what might u have done differently? Thanks for sharing. Aloha ;)

    Maybe use cam followers. Top eccentric and bottom fixed. That way you can adjust eccentric followers down on sliding frame. Tack nut on back side of plate for threaded potion of followers and drill large enough hole for nut to go through. Then weld plate on on frame.

      Hi Jay. Thanks very for the feedback. I found that there is now force on the rivnuts where the are inserted as the really just keep it from sliding forwards and backwards. No force pulling up on them. The reason for them was purely for me to be able to remove the whole frame easily when I need the space.

I ask because I'm from Cape Town :) One wouldn't say you new to this lol you doing an epic job can't wait to see your new videos. couple of quick questions if you don't mind its about your build. What size Bearings and bolts did you use and the rivet thread things you used, that just mind blowing lol what are they called? Can I source them from BMG bearing man? Thanks again Best wishes for 2019

    • @thewoodenfactor9941
      @thewoodenfactor9941  Před 5 lety

      Thank you very much Jawaad. Well spotted, I am also from Cape Town!
      Ok so for the hardware details...
      I used 608zz bearings that I got at Midas, Bearing Man will definitely have some just, couldn't drive all the way out to them. Inside diameter is 8mm and outside is 22mm.
      Bolts for the middle is 8mm x 50mm long and the sides are 8mm x 40mm.
      The one thing I would do differently is adding even more bearings especially towards the front. It is plenty strong at the moment, but a few more in the front would just help for a smoother slide when the back reaches the front.
      Thanks again for the compliments and best wishes for 2019 to you and your family!
      Now go build something! :)
