In the culture, pointing with index finger is considered a bit rude. Unless if you want to accuse someone or point to person who has done wrong. Not sure awpecific reason why but maybe because it sort of has a gesture/connotation of poking.
So either with thumb or all fingers usually.

    Hi Amanda. I'm Malaysian...
Hand gesture is sign to communicate at distant or in silent. we use 4 fingers to point out means that we respect the person who asked for direction.
For shoe-off in office is damnly true, because we do pray and need to keep the place clean.
Thats true to wear proper in public. I do appreciate that.
We do call non - Halal section ( u may find alchol, porks and etc) there.

Hey Amanda just want to let you know about couple things you couldnt understand in the reaction video☺ 1) Handshaking is allowed if it is between a non-muslim man and muslim man, but if a non- muslim man wants to handshake with a muslim women or a non-muslim woman wants to handshake with a muslim man its not allowed. Its part of Islamic religion beliefs. Im a Muslim too. 2) Regarding about the finger pointing style, we Malaysian were actually being teached by our teachers when we were in school to do that way as it is more respectful and looked more professional without pointing fingers. And Im impressed that you still carried the 'shoe not allowed in house' tradition from Malaysia to Canada😜😂. Btw cant wait to see the video you going to do with your Dad at the Malaysian restaurant in Canada. Love from your Malaysian viewers keep up the good work

    • @RaeMcJ
      @RaeMcJ Před 4 lety +4

Just adding to his first point, in Islamic beliefs, we pray 5 times a day so there will be ablutions involved before the prayers, so the act of touching in skin contact between women and men can make the ablutions to be 'impure' because sometimes Muslims would try to keep their ablutions intact before the next prayer :)

    1. Handshake - It's good to wait for the other person to offer their handshake instead of offering to the person. During this Covid-19 pandemic, we just put our hand on our chest as a replacement of handshake.
    2. Alcohol - Love when you said "I don't think that every place needs to be westernised"
    3. Pork / Beef - One can get pork at most Chinese restaurants as well as some Western restaurants. Most restaurants have beef except if the owners are Hindus, Sikh, Buddhist or vegetarians (very minimal - maybe 10% only).
    4. Pointing fingers - I don't think the locals will feel offended if it's done by foreigners. It just we have been taught since school that it is proper to point by using thumb or "whole hand open-palm" instead of pointing using forefinger

Lol in addition to the hand gestures, come to Sabah (east Malaysia) and we have another indicator of how far is the places that you’re asking for. If the person said that the places you wanted to go is just go “straight” and the place is there than that’s mean the place is nearby. But the person said that go “straaaaaaight” then that’s mean the place is a bit far away. The longer the “straight” is the farthest the places is, so you better call a taxi 🤣

As you mentioned, if you’ve lived there for a period of time you’ll be familiar, especially if you mingle with the local folks - you know how to go about, you see things happening. As the country is multicultural, the experience itself is so complex yet unifying. I suppose it’s more apparent when you’re a foreigner in any foreign country. I recently discovered two Malaysian podcast and I think you may enjoy or at least get some insights : mamak session (they’re also on CZcams) and The take away table (CZcams)

They need to be able to adapt in new and unfamiliar environment quickly and with an open mind. Just like when Muslim people travel to non-muslim country, we cannot expect every restaurant to serve halal food. All you have to do is find alternative way such as go for vegetarian restaurant, find halal restaurant or cooking by yourself.

just want explain a bit about the 'no-shaking hand or touching' thingy.. in Islam before we do our prayers we need to 'clean or cleanse ourselves' or called 'wudhu' and touching a female person who is not your 'mahram' will violate & remove the wudhu.. mahram includes your mother, grandmother, daughter & sister.. or in other words someone you cannot marry.. even a wife is excluded.. thus most muslims probably still have their wudhu till the next prayer.. thus the reason for not shaking hands..

If you are traveling and somehow staying in someone house and if he/she is older, not friendly and said "do no touch anything", you should do what they said. Do. Not. Touch. ANYTHING. Especially it was some kind of bottle. Trust me. It's not about being rude. So, don't worry, if you didn't touch anything, you will be just fine. No furniture will move on it's own when you go back to your home.

the prohibition of PDA is mostly common is Asia. Not only in Malaysia and not only because of islamic values. We Asian regardless our religion, will keep PDA at home and in bedroom. Its not something to show off..

I have a foreigner who became my friend because he wanted to learn Malay but Malaysians are mostly very... Idk, fixed..? Like if you speak in english with us, we unconsciously speak english back and when you tell us to speak in malay, it's like we forget all the malay vocabulary lmao it's different from when we speak to another native speaker.
I commented about Malaysians with babies in your latest video on Al Jazeera lol i didnt notice you mentioned it here.
About the negotiations, I'm not sure about appearances, but i know most Malaysian sellers tend to be lenient when the customers are friendly. I get discounts easier when i approach the sellers with "makciikkkk~~~" (auntie) with almost singing voice, and they'd immediately smile when they attend to me. You're less likely to get discounts if you appear angry or intimidating. The seller would just give you up like nah, go to another seller, idc.

One of the best thing in Malaysia is, we watch movies in the original language. Not translated dubbed. Hong Kong movies show in Cantonese. China movies in Mandarin, English movies always in English.

Right, that's so true! Even watching Japanese anime, I find the dubbed ones are so weird. I preferred the original voice with subtitles. Because that's how we feel it all.
