0:44 - Is Mr. Pirate a Unit? Conspiracy debunked. (10:00 - Mr. Pirate is a 6/7 out of 9 on the Condition Score)
1:14 - Mr. Pirate loses his whisker.
1:33 - Why is feline obesity bad? (Diabetes, Orthopedic problems, Hypertension, Infections, Surgical risks, hepatic Lipidosis)
5:22 - Is being a tiny bit fat actually good for a cat? (Yes, for cats with kidney disease, but a lot of cats might develop kidney disease)
6:33 - Is there a "perfect weight" for every cat? (No, it's individual and mostly depends on their size)
7:05 - "Body Condition Score" explained.
8:10 - Main principles of Body Condition Score. (1. How easy is it to feel the ribs? 2. How easy is it to feel their spine?)
10:58 - Flat Mr. Pirate. (Adorable. 10 out of 10. Very good cat blob)
    12:07 - Mr. Pirate gets a smooch.
12:13 - Flappy belly tissue in cats (Is normal).
13:22 - Clawdia (5 out of 9 Body Condition Score. 14:17 - Slightly smaller cat blob.)
    14:23 - Clawdia gets a smooch.

TRUTH! My 6 yr old spayed black tabby, Lady Molly Hadfield-Renfield, Dutchess of Fuzzbutt, looks like a *MASSIVE* puddle of fur when she's sleeping soundly in full flat-cat mode. She is a bit overweight for the same reasons that Mr. Pirate is a bit of chub (but not a full Unit) - she's got IBS and is on prednisolone, and has put on some weight, as well as being a bit less active than she was in her kitteny days. But hell, I've been on prednisone for my asthma, and I remember the dreaded prednisone pounds, as well as how it just makes you want to sleep! She still passes the condition test at around a 7, and her tummy's nothing to worry about, so we're happy!

Jen F If your cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure, I recommend www.felinecrf.org
My cat was stage 4 for 3 years. It was hard work: he needed fluid &/or meds every 4-6 hours, but his condition was exacerbated by him having a heart condition so normal CKD treatment (fluids a couple of times a week) was too severe. The vet hospital said it was a miracle he lasted so long. I just think he was too busy enjoying life & loving his mums to leave us.
Tanya's website (the link I gave above) was invaluable. If your cat has just been diagnosed, please don't despair. It's not an instant death sentence. Many cats at stage 1-3 last years. We were incredibly lucky our boy lasted so long but we fought all the way. We're both at home 24/7 & that helped. Good luck! 😀

Thank goodness so much more is now known about treatment, and about diet to keep them healthy.

A respectable gentleman - haha, that's the best euphemism ever! Interesting about the flappy pouch. My cat was like that. I thought that was a result of spaying.

THANK YOU. I adopted a sad old 14 year old cat. Neutered male, I don't want to make him miserable by with-holding food. He is between "normal" and chubby. Now I understand what that means for him.

Awwww.... don't ever throw away a cat's whiskers! They are a wonderful memento, and are rather lucky (if you believe in luck). This is really important if a cat is elderly. I've kept my late cat's fallen whiskers, and am so glad I did.

Such a huge thank you for this. I'm totally reassured about my cat's weight. He's a rescue cat, and likely a Norwegian Forest (read: BIG BOI), and at our two-week check in, he had gone from 5.3 kg to 6.5 kg! But he's now maintained that weight, a few months in, and I can feel his spine and ribs perfectly (checking was its own challenge, since he was a street cat before and doesn't love being touched). Without these guidelines, it was just so hard to tell on a naturally large and ultra-fluffy guy whether he was healthy or not. Thank you to you, Mr. Pirate, and Clawdia for your help!

oooh, that's mammary tissue?? That was really useful, thanks.
I always wondered why it appeared on my cat after neutering. Especially since at the vet clinics they always have these posters that explain body weight, but that fat pad is only present in the overweight cat diagrams, so it got me confused. Because apart from the floppy tummy my cat was pretty thin.

      @chezmoi42 Před 5 lety +31

It's also called the 'primordial pouch', extra skin to allow for expansion when a cat eats a large prey (like a gazelle!), and to allow for full extension of the back legs as they run (like a cheetah). On a sedentary house cat, it's pretty much vestigial.
