Fascinating. Thank you providing the insight on the challenges of Pinehurst No2 at The US Open. More of this please, as we don't always see this level of analysis and the challenge facing the players. Such a fine line between... genius and being made to look foolish.
The greens design at Pinehursrt number 2 are like the emperor's new clothes. A well crafted shot to the green with the ball landing a few feet from the pin ends with the ball rolling off the green. Brilliant design! A genius must have thought of that!
I am a member of a Donald Ross course. We see this every day.
A measurement of a good golf shot is not necessarily how close to the pin it lands.
Peter and Gary are legendary IMO. I really enjoy their insight. I hope this US Open is challenging.

#2 will test the bomb and gouge gang. Almost always the very toughest test or examination is the US Open, hopefully it will again this year. Love to see pros earn their pars and birdies and even bogies.
Great show and insights as always. I’m a big Bryson fan and agree he has a chance next week, flop shot or no flop shot lol.
I just can't trust his chipping or putting here after watching Augusta. He struggled badly at times. He just played so well it wasn't as noticeable
Bryson is super golf talent, but Harvey Penick's old saying may come into play next week for B.A.D. "the woods are full of long hitters" At the PGA hitting that tree and getting the ball in the fairway and making birdie kind of luck will not work at #2.
@@Crawdad1975 Pinehurst isn't Augusta, and I could say that Bry58n holed putts from off the green on Sunday at Valhalla - similar to what he'll need to do at Pinehurst. But I believe that Cam Smith on form has a great chance, he ticks all of the boxes required.
This comment aged about as well as a gallon of milk left out in the hot sun here in Pinehurst. Going to triple digits this week and next. I like cold 🥶 milk.

I wouldn't call the No.2 greens "igloos." In Pinehurst, we prefer the term "upsidedown saucer." 😁

In 2012 a vendor took us on a golf trip to the east coast and we played Pinehurst but it wasn’t #2 . Still immensely enjoyable and challenging especially hitting off those pine needles.
Ross never intended the greens to be so unfair and saucer like. The greens were raised over the years by excess top dressing usage. Pete Dye confirmed this.

Based on what the guys said, I like Morikawa. The only thing about Morikawa that goes against him based on what Peter said the winner needs is his decision making. That was his demise at Augusta. Poor excursion at PGA. Hopefully he learned about dealing with pressure in the last two majors being he was in the last group on Sunday on both.

It’s hard not to pick Scheffler in every tournament right now. But if not Scheffler, my next two picks for this course setup are Shane Lowry and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Bry58n has a good chance, he was holing putts off the green at Valhalla on the final day, but to me Cam Smith on form ticks all of the boxes to win here at Pinehurst - and he is wild off the tee like the previous winners you mentioned who won at Pinehurst. I thought Cam would be a great fit last year at LACC and he finished top 4, I believe he will do the same again here. Morikawa surprisingly has done well at majors and big tournaments this year, I see him finishing top 4 as well. Scheffler's putting will be exposed at this course so I don't think he will win. Brooks & Hovland haven't been stellar on greens this year either. Reed isn't playing but with his short game he could have done well. Smith & Morikawa are my bets.
Excellent commentary and insights. But come on guys, if you want to do this CZcams thing, get better cameras, camera work and some audio. This could be a great one if you commit.
Excellent discussion of D Ross and #2. Played #2 at least 20 times over the years and was a member of a D. Ross golf course for three decades.. As an ordained minister I can confirm that Ross was not only a believer in God but also in the Devil. Play most of his courses, especially number 2 and you will be calling God's name out regularly trying to execute around his devilish greens!

@@mikebaker7940 Raleigh Country Club. Final course Ross designed. Another DR gem. Held Korn Ferry event there two weeks ago. Course held up with winning score of -8. Highest winning score by far for year on Korn Ferry tour. Small greens. Classically slopped in DR style. As always course placed a premium on approach play and getting up and down. Few players visiting the course played to their handicap. Many walked away moaning about how "unfair" the course was. Music to Donald Ross's ears.
@@jackradford2704 Camden Country Club. Walter Travis built the first 9 holes in 1902, then when the membership wanted to add 9 more, Travis went to see Ross when he was the owner of Pinecrest, to come to Camden and basically start over. It still baffles the best and of course, we just had the 50th Carolinas Four Ball a few weeks ago. If you have not played Camden in the last few years, you should come. The course is amazing.
Could you clarify a golf rule? Nasa Hataoka got DQ’d this week at LPGA tournament where she took over 3 minutes to play her next shot after not finding her ball she hit in the tall grass area. Is the player responsible to time herself to accurately track the 3 minutes? It seems no one ever starts a stopwatch or use their watch to keep accurate time where someone can maybe say hey 3 minutes and 4 seconds elapse so she should pe penalized. There had to many times on tv where more than 3 minutes have elapse without anyone getting penalized. Please clarify

Final qualify results for LIV golfers…. 2 players qualified in 36 hole Final Qualifying events out of 17 players attempting to qualify. This does not count LIV players who were exempt from qualifying due to past winners of a major in the last 5 years, being in the Top 50 in OWGR and other exempt criteria.
Love you guys! Makes me wonder why you feel you need a third-wheel host. The guy is so phony is hurts. I could say the same thing about most golf shows though, particularly the non-entities on Golf Channel. Good Lord! Golf is in such a great place globally, but if you listen to most of the talking heads out there, the sport is in crisis!! That's why you two fellows are so necessary and important right now. Anyway, my long-winded way of saying you should ditch the extra baggage and just do it yourselves.

I believe you mean Harry Colt. Of course the discussion in this video is insular to US golf course architects / architecture, as the topic is specifically Pinehurst GC, which is located in the US and site of the US Open, and to a lesser extent mentioning other US Open venues. The vast majority of Colt’s body of work is located in the UK and to a lesser extent continental Europe. There isn’t a Colt designed course among the US Open venues past & future, so there is no reason to talk about Colt’s body of work in the context of golf course architecture in the US.
I’m sorry, but what you guys are describing is defensive golf. Boring. Ok, for 2 or 3 holes, ok, but people like offensive play. It sounds as though this is a torture test for the pros. I don’t know if I like that. The old tournaments were not like this. Recall, Palmer is talked about for winning at cherry hills because he drove the first hole.
Playing for a modest score on a very hard test IS and has been US Open golf for long time. Even par should be and is a great score at a US Open on most holes. There will be no 62's or 63's at this event. Thank goodness! Birdie fest golf is for people that do not understand the complexity of the game golf. Sorry if you think so? The players are not tortured, they are tested! Trying respecting something challenging and difficult, think Hogan not Palmer.
@@TerlinguaTalkeetna agreed to most of what you said. But what Gary and Peter were describing at 16 was a no win situation. If you don’t hit the ball in the exact spot then you make bogey or double? I think golf is where you can make a mistake and with a good shot or putt make a save. What they describe is different. I guess you hate Millers 63, yet the rest of the field was around par, then the USGA fixed winged foot in 74 and it was a debacle. So much for the real golf gods knowing golf. Listen to the described in 99, USGA saying to plant grass then coming back later and reversing it. Really, a 563 yd par 4? The cool thing about golf is to compare to old times. The game today is way different than 1970. But, I guess the 1970 game was way different to 1920. Accept the progress. But I could enjoy in 1970, even from back tees, couldn’t do it today
@@wayneriley7367 No win situation? Na, you only have to play smarter and better than the others in the field that week regardless of the setup and playing conditions. That has not changed since 1895. Ya I kinda like that. Why the need to change that for people that really want to watch American Gladiators or Amazing Race kind of entertainment. I accepted change long ago in life, but marketing progress meaning it's always good or great is just foolish You may better understand the difference in yrs to come ?
563 par 4? In 1930 there was a 260 yd par 3. Half the field couldn't reach it. Still the same for everyone.
