Greatest Golf Collapses and Chokes of All Time (Part 2)

- Golf entails an extreme level of mental challenges that must be overcome in order to succeed at the highest level. Unlike team sports, golfers do not have teammates to bail them out if they don't perform; it's all on them. One mistake can lead to a compound of errors that can be difficult to defeat, and even just one miscue can cost a player a championship.
However, some of the players in this video found redemption. I.K. Kim won the Women’s British Open in 2017. Kyle Stanley staged an 8 shot comeback the following week to win his first PGA Tour event at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Retief Goosen won the 2001 U.S. Open the following day in an 18 hole Monday playoff over Mark Brooks. Even with Mark Calcavecchia's collapse, the U.S. was able to hold on to win the Ryder Cup 14.5 to 13.5. Tom Watson would go on to win 8 major championships after his collapse. Ben Hogan would go on to win 9 majors after his choke at The Masters. Patty Sheehan won 4 majors after her 1990 collapse, including two U.S. Open victories. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1993. Lorena Ochoa won two majors after her collapse, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the video.
Jean van de Velde, Greg Norman, and other collapses are in Part 1.

I can relate to how tough this is, I've been there ! I was playing in a close one years ago, leading by one stroke, going into the par 3, 18th. Off the tee, I hit the dinosaur's foot, then the windmill blade on the second shot. It would take five putts, before that blue ball finally dropped in the cup. My wife won by a stroke and it would be months, before I could muster the courage to play Adventure Golf again. I never fully recovered.
Lol
You know, there are so many different phrases in golf, that when I read 'dinosaurs foot' I immediately thought 'That probably means a bad drive or something... yeah...' before reading on.

I never miss a 1 foot putt, I always wait for my buddies to say “pick it up!” Lol
HAHAHAHA Good one!
Captain G Lol I shoot between my legs or with the opposite side of the putter. That way if it goes in it looks cool and if it misses I can laugh it off and pick it up.
My friends do that too. If it is within 4 feet of the hole, they just pick it up... what is that lol
😂

This is too depressing... reminds me of when I'm playing.

All of these moments make the things that Tiger does down the stretch in tournaments to win over his career even more impressive. People just really don't understand the kind of pressure that is associated with those short putts on the last hole of tournaments and majors. Tiger poured them in like they were tap ins. The 12 ft. putt Tiger made to get into that playoff with Rocco in the 2008 US Open is one of the best putts ever made. Unreal...

Facts
I nearly collapse under the pressure of making a single birdie in a round, let alone winning one of the biggest tournaments in golf
The Tiger slurping didn't take long.
10:15 that’s me after every round
The biggest I can remember was Jean van de Velde at the open. That was 20 plus years ago and I still remember it like it happened yesterday. Now that was a meltdown
I was hoping someone would mention this in the comments! That was the most incredible round of golf i have ever seen. His choices were absolutely inexplicable. I grabbed the nearest VHS tape, popped in and hit REC as soon as I realized what was happening. Watched it dozens of times since.
i've been watching golf for 30+ yrs and that was the worst one that I can remember also
It was in 1999 to be exact.
This certainly was a big choke, although I personally think Greg Norman's Masters choke three years earlier was even worse!
Lawrie with biggest comeback in major history
Just goes to show that this game came be very humbling, even for the pros. My philosophy is just have a few good shots, do the best I can.
This shows the real battle is with the monster inside
Did anyone else rock and sway in their seat or couch watching this. So heartbreaking, than again so humbling, because no one is invisible or above the game itself.
Edit: every golfer has that moment, even in casual golf.
The laugh at 2:45 was priceless lol.
Nothing in sports will humble you more quickly and with more ferocity than golf.
Fun fact: After Kyle Stanley’s collapse at Torrey Pines, he bounced back and won the [Phoenix Open] at TPC Scottsdale the following week.
Yes he did!! Quite a bounce back, and for his first PGA Tour victory as well!
Shows you how good he was playing at the time.
"I tried to overcome it with my mind... but I couldn't" She got me teared up.
@TIGERWOODSBOYFRIEND i think the music made all these seem more tragic than they really were
Felt like I owed some people a hug after that one.
Well, thats basically me playin golf.
A camera crew should just follow me for a round and they’d have a video like this

The laughs just piercing thru all of the aws 😂
IzzyFizzy wth are you talking about 😂😂😂😂
I remember that 2012 Ryder Cup, it was epic!
This interstellar backtrack just amplifies the sadness.
This is one of the best golf videos on CZcams... Finally, a professionally produced video that is compelling, spell-binding; you can't take your eyes off of the action as it unfolds.
After the stuff Sergio said about Tiger, I loved every bit of that meltdown.
Was it when Sergio said Stevie Wonder was a much safer driver than Tiger Woods?
- or -
Was it when Sergio said to Tiger, “break a leg” just before the start of the Masters?
🤗🤗🤗
Sergio kept saying Tiger "distracted" him in round 3 and he's always been jealous of Tiger or something 😂
To be honest though, he said some racist stuff about Tiger at a dinner AFTER the tourney. I wrote the comment thinking those comments happened before, either way he was an ass at the Players.
Sergio was, and still is, a punk.
I have loved every one of Tigers meltdowns 😂
@@peterhammer6915 not to many of them.
It's amazing how many memories I've collected watching golf over the years. I remember watching Kyle Stanley's collapse in 2012 and how impressive he played. I picked him as an outright winner the next week and we won big. He has 2 career victories.
I know Tom Watson was wondering where that Stuart Cink was in his last Open run.
Arnold Palmer was wondering why Player was shaking his hand like that, thinking "show some class son."
Mahan was a great player and doesn't seem like he ever recovered from that chip.
yes amazing he won the next week
What happen to hunter mahan
Id rather never play golf than be 1 put away from winning the masters and miss it
Remember Mahan was leading the Canadian Open early on day 3, when his wife went into labor? I think that was the last time he was in contention on the tour. Crazy.
@@btrav667wasn't that like 20 years ago?
This video taught me that golf apparel reached its pinnacle in the 1970’s
Lot of people thinking this depressing. This is beautiful. No, we arent laughing at these players, or hold them in our minds as talentless hacks, we still revere them as greats, but recognize the humanity in triumph and failure. These may be some of their darkest moments as individuals, but there is beauty and light in uniting us as humans with compassion and empathy.
“It’s not possible.”-Case
“No, it’s necessary.” -Cooper
Great film but that is one incredibly lame line.
1:50 *"Hey Butthole!"*
Did he really just say that??! Lmfaoo
I think it was "tight buttholes" lol
The music makes these human failures even more heartbreaking
That was excruciatingly painful to watch. There's not a golfer out there who hasn't suffered the same failures ... even if not on the grand scale shown here, it's equally painful. So why the hell do we continue to play this game that causes us so much grief? That could be the subject of a large book!
Thanks for posting.
The music in this video is literally a mood.
It just goes to show. Even the greats miss them!
When I was 18 in 1972, and about a 7-handicap, I started a round of golf having birdied 3 of the first 4 holes. Had a 6-footer on #6 to go to 4 under. Rammed it by and missed the 4-footer coming back. I started thinking about my score and everything fell apart. I had 5 birdies that day and shot 9 over par for 18.
I returned to the same course some 30 years later, playing a round with my brother-in-law, and told him about my collapse in 1972 as we were walking down the 1st fairway.
Crazy thing was I again birdied 3 of the first 4 holes. This time however I ended up shooting 1-over for 18 holes, so I wasn't too disappointed.
If you play golf long enough, you're going to choke sometimes just playing casual golf with nothing on the line. I have a lot of compassion for the pros who collapse and miss out on wins that could be life changing.
Sergio's quad bogey remains my favorite PGA moment of all time. Priceless.
Would have rather seen him win than tiger.

I laughed, so sue me, do you want/win your medal for morals? Of course you don't. Continue being a keyboard warrior.....
@@larrytonge4104 Actually, I've caddied at an exclusive club on and off for nearly 20years. You'd NEVER hear somebody laugh at a missed putt like that. At least where I learned the game. So, i'm not being a "keyboard warrior", it's called class.
Continue with the phrases you've heard from others that justify your abrasiveness and angry replies. I don't need a medal. I just know i'll never play golf with somebody like you twice. *tips hat*
Goalby's reaction says it all. A true athlete: he wanted to win with his clubs, not by some pencil mistake. It was a stupid rule to enforce under the circumstances since countless people had actually seen him make the 3. What puzzles me about the rule and the decision is this: what if he'd actually scored a 4 on the hole, but Aaron had written 3, and De Vicenczo had signed for that. Surely THAT score wouldn't stand. No, they'd intervene and disqualify him because he'd actually scored 4. But that contradicts the idea that you can't retroactively adjust the scorecard to comport with the actual facts. Stupid, stupid rule.
Good point, this inconsistency in the rules makes no sense.
Them’s the rules. Always have been. Bitch about it if you want, but if you want to be a professional, you have to accept ALL the rules, whether you disagree with them or dislike them. One thing is for sure, Di Vincenza never submitted an incorrect scorecard again in his life. It’s an important lesson for kids. One you’ve obviously never learned.
@@bilinguru Pity any kid of yours
@@bilinguru yikes you must be an Army kid.
the idea is to emphasize the truth in scorekeeping for the game. No matter what happens, you will be penalized if you do not keep score properly. It is a shame but the spokesperson put it very well. When we say we are going to play under the rules of golf, we have no choice.
Man these were brutal, i could see how one might never recover mentally from coming so close and choking it away on the last hole.

Loved seeing Garcia hit the water🤣🤣
The man who has won more majors than anyone, Jack Nicklaus, actually failed to win more (19 second place) times than he won (18). Golf is the hardest sport there is.
I wouldn't say he choked in any of those. He beat 154 other golfers. The number of runner-up finishes he had plus top five finishes in majors blows Tiger away. Plus he has 18 and Tiger has 15.

2019 British Open, JB Holmes final round 87
2005 Women’s U.S. Open: Michelle Wie final round 82
Thomas McCarrick JB Holmes really didnt have a great chance going into. It was a terrible round though and i remember him shooting something in the 80s in 2017 Players when he started the day with the lead
Frills 31 What about Rocco Mediate 2006 Masters. He was tied for the lead after 11 and then made a 10 on the twelfth.
Hey Thomas, yeah both Holmes and Wie are in the discussion, but I didn’t include them for a few reasons. Though JB was in 3rd to start the day, he was 6 shots back. Barring an incredible round, it would have been very difficult for him to win, which is why I did not include him. You are right though, an 87 is certainly a terrible round. I didn’t include Michelle Wie because she was just a 15 year-old amateur at the time. You’re right, both are bad collapses, I just chose not to include them in this video because of the circumstances and because I didn’t want to make the video too long, so I had to make some cuts. Rocco is an interesting one. He was tied for the lead at -4 after he made the turn, but if I’m not mistaken, by the time he got to the 12th tee he was 3 back of the lead thanks to a bogey on 11 and back-to-back birdies from Mickelson on 7 and 8. However, you could definitely make a case for this one given he was tied for the lead with just 9 holes to play.
All these players dared to be great. Keep your head up and never look back. Champions at heart.
I can relate, oh boy can I relate....but it just makes your good shots feel even better...

The music with these shots are the funniest 😂😂😂😂
The biggest collapse must be Greg Norman in the 1996 Masters. He started the final day with a six shot lead over Faldo and Norman shot a 78 to finish second to Faldo. I have never forgot that shocker
I'm usually glued to Masters coverage on Sunday, year after year. That 96 collapse by Norman was the only time I can remember that I ever turned it off early. I just couldn't watch it
Jean Van De Velde leading by three shots going onto the 18th at the 1999 Open and taking a triple bogey 7 has to be the biggest choke in a major championship.

I had so much fun watching this, it kind of made up for my (predominant) failures on the course. I finished golf in the nick of time, just before a sign with "Asylum" became visible on the horizon.
In any sport the mind is one's most important organ yet few players know how to work on strengthening it, let alone try. I trained and became a clinical hypnotherapist when I seriously competed and such was only the start of getting tough and reliable.
Fair play to ik kim for going on and winning the British open a lot of golfers wouldn't get over that miss putt

Golf truly is the hardest sport. The mental fortitude it takes just to get through a round at that level is imaginable, but to come down to only a few shots at a major and a million dollar or more pay difference and sometimes down to a simple 3 foot putt. Talk about nerves
22 years old watching the Calcevecchia match. I will always remember the "are you kidding me?!" quote. I was actually laughing at his meltdown, but as years pass I really felt for him. He was found on the beach, in tears, after this. The thing about the Ryder Cup is that you are not just letting yourself down, but your fellow teammates and it hurts. It hurts bad. Competitive sports can be the greatest elation in your life or the worst.

First attempt at passing my PAT for the PGA I had six shots to give with nine holes to play. Missed a birdie putt on 18 for a 43 and missed by one. 4 hr drive back home after that collapse really gets to you. 2 months later on my second attempt I took a 9 on the third hole of the day and reflected on my first failed attempt. I thought I was going fail again but knew there was a lot of golf left. Said not this time. and played even par the rest of the day. Golf is a mental game. If you think about failing you will. What the mind can conceive in and believe in it can achieve in
Cool story. I have choked in my pat every time but never really was that close. Missed by 8 shots two times, and shot 89-84 last time as a 3 handicap... like 8 ob/hazard balls or something....will keep trying tho

the intersteller soundtrack had me dead haha
That poor guy who wrote down the wrong score on his card. I hate to see a player lose like that
Especially when he had a birdie 3, and signed for a par 4.
Tommy Aaron wrote it down. He was Roberto's playing partner. De Vincenzo signed for it, which under the rules means it stands. (If he had signed for a lower score than he deserved, the penalty is disqualification). The decision to let the rule stand was made by none other than Bobby Jones, the great '20s legend and the father of the Masters tournament. He was an invalid at the time and the officials brought the situation to him and he said they had to play by the rules.
Colin Montgomery with such an intelligent statement for someone who’s never won a Major.......
I love watching an ad after 15 seconds of content.
Heartbreaking losses. You have to feel for these people. These are collapses that they will never forget.
Ben Hogan obsessed about his miss at the 17th at Cherry Hills in 1960 for the remainder of his life. He never stopped talking about it. With all his great accomplishments, that was the thing that always returned to the top of his thoughts.
Every story behind each clip includes an incredible comeback. Keep that in your mind when you’re down.
