WEIGHT LOSS AFTER BREAST CANCER PART 1 - WHAT IS A HEALTHY METABOLIC STATE?

  • A common side effect of going through Breast Cancer is weight gain.
    There are many reasons people gain weight during their Breast Cancer experience, but it is yet another topic that is under addressed for Breast Cancer Survivors.
    Maybe that is why the word Survivor is used so often....rather than Thriver. It's not that great just to "survive" something. You want to THRIVE off the back of a bad experience and become a better version of yourself.
    With the right help, Weight Loss is definitely something that you can take control of after Breast Cancer treatment to empower yourself and move forward again.
    In this video I sit down with my brother Andrew McKenzie (Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist, Masters of Nutrition) to first discuss - What is a healthy Metabolic State, and what is in our diet that is keeping us overweight?

    This is so excellent. You’re right oncologist’s typically do not discuss nutrition. That is amazing considering what a central piece of a persons health. I let emotional eating & depression take over my life. Everything changed after the breast cancer diagnosis. I never want to go through that again. But making the habit changes is very overwhelming. Andrew really simplified it

    Hi Jen, I can't wait to see more videos on this topic. I was so happy when your guest said to eat salmon and eggs for breakfast. I've been doing that since my surgery. I have so much more energy during the first part of my day. I love to have salmon for lunch. I've been making it with steamed rice, with or without a salad. I'm ready to skip the rice and just have the salad or veggies with it. The old saying of you are what you eat is so true. Thanks for all the helpful information in this and future videos. Can't wait for the next one on nutrition.

    I think the explanation of how you become over weight while you have or are recovering from cancer was great and I found the 16.8 fasting the easiest thing for me as I needed to switch from using sugar to using fat for energy and then slowly but surely (even though was told I could eat anything I wanted in the 8 hours off) as soon as I started making healthier choices I lost 9kg in 2 months. And no longer have a fatty liver...my drs very pleased.
    I look forward to another video with you both.
    It took a while to get used to it and I cant lie 😁 I fall off the wagon every now and then but its so easy to start again at 6pm that evening.... and have brunch at 10am... do yourself a favour ladies and go and see Jennys wonderful brother as he'll find you the right diet for you..which is the key to losing weight successfully forever.......for everyone.

      I began the Mayo Clinic Diet Plan, really NOT a diet, but a way of eating and revising my relationship with food 2 weeks after my lymphectomy. It's whole food, animal protein, no sugars, limited fats, etc. In 3 months I lost 30 lbs. I also doubled my time working out to 150 min/week, half of it being resistance exercises. I am religious, and I believe that was very important, as it allowed me to trust in God and work VERY hard to do EVERYTHING I could do. Ended 6 weeks of radiation radiation the end of March and I feel great. Your exercises are terrific. I plan to do them forever. BTW, I'm 76 y.o.

    Hi Jen. Your videos are really helpful so thanks so much as I'm suffering with stubborn cording at present and trying to do exercises and seeing physiotherapist too. The cupping sounds like a good thing too. Main question really. I'm 3 months past last chemo and almost 2 months past mastectomy and having real problems putting on weight. I'm cutting out dairy which can help with weight gain but any other alternatives? I feel ok but look quite sick still due to not gaining weight. Could you please possibly do a video in the future for us at the other end of having problems with putting on weight. Thanks again.

    I enjoyed this very much. It sounds like Andrew is describing a Keto diet. Is that correct? I went Keto after a friend showed me studies and articles about the benefits for preventing recurrence of Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I easily lost 15 lbs. and am at my goal weight. I wonder if fruit, other than berries, can be part of my diet again. I sure miss all the fruit I used to eat-apples, watermelon, plums, cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruit, grapes, dragon fruit, and more! Can you ask Andrew his thoughts on that please?

    Using an aromatase inhibitor makes it very hard to deal with metabolic disorders. I was in a great place before my diagnosis and I was using HRT. Once my estrogen went away my weight jumped up. Even while doing keto, intermittent fasting and 48 hour fasts. That combined with 45 min walks every day.

      @@dn-cp6sh Hello, I was started on Letrozole and within 6 months I had a lot of pain overall in my body muscles and joints with the worst of it being my hands and lower back. My hands were fairly crippled in the mornings and I developed trigger finger in my middle finger and thumbs on both hands. A moderate workout with weights would help but by evening it was difficult again. My oncologist gave me a 2 month break and then started me on exempastane. I am doing much better even 7 months in with overall pain gone. Much less trigger finger and moderate lower back pain when sleeping (I have preexisting back issues, so I think the medication just agravates it.) I do still experience a lot of stiffness after immobility such as prolonged sitting, especially in a vehicle or during the night. It is much more tolerable. I have gained 12 pounds since starting the AI that I am disappointed about; it is worth the possibility of keeping the cancer from returning.

    Hello, do you think the stress contribute to get more weight?

    • @TheBreastCancerPhysio
      @TheBreastCancerPhysio  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Nubis, absolutely. There is research to show high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can impact your ability to lose weight. But stress also leads to a poor diet because of things like emotional eating. Hence why Mental Health Professionals are so important during and following Breast Cancer. Ask your Doctor for a referral if stress is impacting you. Jen
