- Hori Split Pad Pro - Is It Still Worth Buying?
The Hori Split Pad Pro released back in 2020 as the only real "pro" Joy-Con alternative. The official Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons are small, uncomfortable, have small joysticks and Nintendo never released any alternatives. Since Hori released the Split Pad Pro they've became a success and many other companies have copied their designs, many of them including better features like rumble and Gyro. So, is the Hori Split Pad Pro still worth buying? Let's find out in my review!

“The quality control must be a high standard because they’re officially licensed” looks at my joy cons..
Bahhaha
Made my day!
tried to look at my joycons but my view went off to the left
@@MaXxOwnagesMel made my day fr
everything you touch.. breaks
after buying several different joy con alternatives, i can tell you that these are the best. something people DONT mention when they talk about the split pad pro's. is that these things do NOT drain power from your switch. everyone complains that they dont have rumble or motion and have no internal batteries but thats A GOOD THING because that means they will not need to be charged and constantly draw power from your switch. many people dont understand this and assume less features means worse quality. its actually opposite. these are meant for specific games like skyrim, Dying Light, red dead, doom. etc. these are for people who dont need those features and honestly you dont actually NEED those features for most the games anyway. i noticed with regular joy cons my switch would die so quickly in portable mode because the joy cons would constantly charge themselves from my switch battery. the difference when using the split pad pro was insane. switch lasts wayyyyyy longer
Can i use it for motion aiming my bow on Zelda totk? Thank you
brother, the joycon have internal batterys inside apart from the switch and is charging when u charge the switch so, yeas, the hori pad consume energy from the switch, and joycons not.
You actually play the games you talk about! I bought a split pad just for the turbo function when playing Animal Crossing. You’re the only person on YT who mentioned whhat game benefits from the function (the rest justa mention the turbo feature and that’s it)
You just earned a subscriber
Had mine since December 2020 no drifts, no problems, very comfortable, it made me play my Switch in handheld mode a lot more.
Awesome stuff
Do they wiggle much when attached to the nintendo switch?
@@openheartedwarrior2971 Yeah recently back in January of this year the left one that I had since December of 2020 made the side of my Switch wiggle to the point where the left Split Pad Pro snapped in half while I was playing Mario Strikers Battle League. But at least I still have my back up Split Pad Pro and I mostly use the Split Pad Compact that I bought around November or December last year anyway. R.I.P the left Pikachu themed Split Pad Pro that I had for so long.
@@SolarFarle
With that being said does the split pad compact wiggle as much as the regular hori split pad pro?
@@openheartedwarrior2971 Not as much for me thankfully. But it still wobbles after heavy usage.
They were around 3500 yen in a Nintendo store in Akihabara for just the joycon parts. Great price for what it is. My joycons started drifting like crazy a while ago and wasn't willing to shell out $70 for new ones since I think the switch 2 is somewhere close.
Wow, in the last couple of days I've been searching reviews for these joycons because I want to convince myself if I need it or not, I open CZcams today and I see this new video 🔥. Hey man, love your channel, regards from Mexico ✌🏻
Haha that's awesome! Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for the support!
Same thing happened to me an hour ago lol!
@@jayzcoverz1809 Haha awesome :D
Buy it. You won't regret it.
@@liqix3544 actually I did, and Im very happy with them. It’s funny I borrowed ones from a friend (he bought those 3 years ago) then I got mine a couple of days ago and they feel more precise and with less internal dead zone.
Thank you for this. I am getting these after work today! I'm mostly into shooters and such and feel this will be an upgrade to the stock joycons. Appreciate the informative video! Ggs
i have small hands so im hoping i’ll love this controller! i looked at lots of reviews. im excited because i play more handheld. the drift was so bad on my old joycons. im excited for it to hopefully be more comfortable
Yay remember when I said I needed a vid about this, you actually did it! Thx
I didn't forget :D glad you saw the video! No problem at all :) always happy to hear video suggestions!
Looking for something that'll be comfortable for handheld when prime 4 comes out. This is the perfect review for the perfect (essentially) joy cons!
I can't WAIT for Prime 4!! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I keep the Hori Split Pad Pro on my Switch at all times. It's such a great controller for portable mode play. It would be nice if it had rumble, but so much else about it works that I can easily do without it. The size is nice for my large hands, the joysticks are fantastic to use, and the d-pad (while not as good as 8BitDo's offerings) is solid. But my favorite thing about the Split Pad Pro is the trigger buttons. I love how big and wide they are. They're honestly the best-feeling triggers I've ever used.
Yeah they're awesome but lack of rumble and gyro is sad :( glad you love them though!
Try Dobe Grip Controller? The one for OLED (it also works with OG switches). That thing has me numb from the strength of the rumble. The vibration is like 3x stronger than the pro controller and joycons.
@@louvella-sama Yeah I definitely want to try the Dobe grip just need to try and contact them somehow to see if we can test one!
@@128KB Looking forward to the video! 🤗
@@128KB I thank you guys just answered my question I've been looking at these and I found a set at Walmart on clearance for $25 but wanted to look at a review first
If nothing else I'm looking forward to playing Street fighter with it he's going to make the game so much more playable

I have to compact version and I absolutely love it. it is right in between the normal joycon form factor and the split pad pro
i’ve had mine for about a year and a half and just now the left stick started drifting. but from the first year and 4 months, they were great and i’d heavily recommend them for that
Ah sorry to hear that! No issues on mine after a couple years or so, whenever they launched at least haha
Really good bit of info about only being able to assign the back buttons to buttons on the same side. I was all gee'd up to assign the back buttons to left and right on the d-pad for Xenoblade (selecting arts), but I wouldn't be able to do that. Bit disappointing...
Yeah that's very true, it would be great if you could assign it to either side but sadly not
I had the same thoughts thats ashame
@@HollowRick I also found it disappointing but I understood the technology limitation that prevents it: The pads are -Split- as the name says. Without wireless they can't communicate with each other. Since they aren't made by Nintendo there's no magic firmware in the switch to pass information like "He wants to set Dpad left to the rightpaddle" from the left to the right. Since it can't pass through the Switch and they have no wireless radios or wire connecting them it's impossible for them to know what you want from the other half. There's an idea for Hori; a simple wire to run behind or above the Switch linking the 2 halves so this would function 😁💡
Had the Split Pad Pro for about a year. Really liked it but bummed it didn't have rumble/motion control. Just swapped to the NYXI Joypad and in my opinion it's an upgrade in every way. It's just as comfortable, with turbo/autofire function, assignable button function, rumble (with adjustable intensity), gyro, wireless either individually or together with the INCLUDED frame. And it can wake the Switch. Love love love it.
Oh yeah, and of course the customisable thumbstick LED colours! 😂
We've got a video up of the NYXI :)
what about the dpad of nyxi? im thinking whether i should pick binbok/nyxi or hori.
@@user-fx4kc5cr7m hori for the dpad and dead zone
How is the deadline on nyxi
I got the Arceus ones, I use hori on only one side and keep the other side with joycon when I need gyro and rumble function. It is a pity that it cannot be used wirelessly.
That's a good idea! Yeah it's a shame there's no gyro or wireless features
Would you recommend these now still? I find the original switch joycons to small for me on handheld mode so was looking for an alternative for playing in handheld. Thanks so much for the videos!
Yes they're still excellent but maybe also check out the NYXI Hyperion Pros, videos on my channel they're only in green though 😅 but more features
much obliged mate! thank you@@128KB
I ended getting the eevee ones on eBay as an open box for $40 I do wish that it was wireless(I wonder if it’s because Nintendo doesn’t want them to directly compete with the joycons) but I have the binbok ones for that but the Hori are better for shooting games for sure & I play mostly in handheld mode so these were a hand saver
Ah nice, yeah maybe! Yeah the BinBok's are great but can't match the Hori's accuracy!
Question, why the hori are better for shooting than the binbok?
How long it take to come in?
Switch controllers and joy-cons is the reason I ended up just getting a Lite recently. I was geared up to buy an OLED and then realized I'd have to buy numerous accessories to get the most out of it and a comfortable controller experience since joy-cons absolutely suck. The Lite is awesome and has a nice D-pad. My only gripe is the position of the - button. Hard to reach and I often end up clicking the left stick which can be a problem depending on the game. Screen size and resolution is perfectly fine. I'm glad they make so many variations of the Switch. More options is a great thing.
i bought the lite first and was paranoid of joystick drift that i ended up grabbing the OLED as well....the screen was a little too small for games with a lot of text but the fear of the non user replaceable joy sticks made me cave.
Totally agree, so glad there's different options so people can find what's right for them
You got a lite because of controllers? So because there are many choices of controllers you said fuck that and bought a tiny lite switch that has no controller options? Seems smart.
@@randybobandy9828 no, I didn't. If you read better you could figure it out a bit but I'll explain it since your mind can't grasp this. I didn't want to be spending the money on extra controllers and accessories. I play a lot of old games with the D pad which is why the Lite or another controller was better. I didn't want to spend $350 plus controllers and accessories for a Switch when Nintendo is due for something new very soon. It is smart. I easily saved $200-$300 on something that I was only going to be playing in handheld mode anyway.
I had the lite and noticed small drift starting so I traded it in its alot nicer to be able to by new controllers instead of a new console
I only used Gyro because I sucked at switch joy-con aiming, but was flawless at PS4 gaming, so I got these and I play just as good on my switch now.
I've had my eyes on the Mega Man edition of this for a long time, but the lack of Wireless or even wired capability really is a downer. I prefer to play Mega Man on a TV screen, and I know that adapters for them exist, but as far as I know you have to buy a whole separate controller with it. I feel like these would sell much better if either every one of them came bundled with the wireless adapter, or if they just sold the wireless adapter individually.
These seem like it would be perfect for me bcuz I honestly don't care for gyro and I hate rumble on my controllers when im playing video games. Overall great review 🙂 👍🏾
I hate the clicking noise on joycons are these different
@@SimGTAandCOD doubt it lol. Depends on how hard you move the joycons around I guess
You'll love these then! They're less "clicky" than the joycons but they still make a noise
@@128KB is it a irritating noise?
I got the volcanic red ones and a cheap hard case to carry my OLED in when there attached my god there so much better for my big hands I don't think I could ever go back to regular joy cons anymore
They're so good aren't they!!
I use the turbo function to farm money in pokemon scarlet. It wasn't on the fastest mode but when I left it on over night it was still playing . When I went to work and came back . My switch was turned off . I left it on the charger so I know it is 100% . When I turned it on , it was in a match . Can you tell me why it turned off ? Any ideas ?
I should also mention that I had the joy con next to my switch over night. So when the pokemon terastilized , the joy cons was vibrating. And when I moved it away when I went to work , that's when my switch turned off . Could that be a reason ?
After two years of the Hori being released it is ridiculous not having a new version with Rumble HD and gyroscope included. At least the Rumble. Even more so if it is a licensed product
Yeah I definitely agree, would love to see a an actual split pad "PRO"
Big daddy Nintendo said nope lol
Your like beat em ups JR lol great review buddy!
Hahaha thanks, don't know about JR though I'm probably the same age or older than him! Glad you enjoyed the video :D
@@128KB lol
can you tell me what joycon is more like a PRO controller that has REPROGRAMMABLE buttons? because it's driving me nuts that Hori can NOT BE reprogrammed. I also don't like how "light" they are.
Your videos are really good, you deserve more subs!
Thank you so much, appreciate the support :D
@@128KB What country are you from?
@@FlashingDutch UK :) You?
@@128KB Netherlands
@@FlashingDutch Awesome! Never been but want to visit some day!
Im not much for handheld mode these days, mainly not enough time to play switch. If i do play in handheld mode i either use my binbok joycons or my Nexigo ergonomic handheld controller which basically you dock the switch into it. I like both but lean towards the nexigo, even if the nexigo drains the switch i dont play long enough to be an issue. I still debate if i want get the hori pad pro or not.
I want to test those nexigo some day! I'm enjoying the split pad compact currently!
@@128KB I know the nexigo make their own joycons but i have the one where you dock the controller. Using it reminds me of the old wii u gamepad and not help have slight nostalgic feels to it when i play it. I had no issues with it with only gripe about is wish they had their own better instead of draining it from switch. However i dont ever play on it for long and to me was worth the purchase. My brother prefers the binboks that he got, their okay but i prefer the nexigo.
Binbok joycons are very good too I have binbok and hori both are very good I recommend both
Awesome stuff, glad you love them
They do mark the back though top left and right over time in my experience
Bought these yesterday. I alrdy love em. When I swap back to my Pro Con, it's like night and day with comfort. Makes me appreciate the simplicity of the Pro Con more
As for the Hori Split Pad Pro, they should've made them bigger. Handles are almost non existent. They went full size with errything else, they should've went full size for the hand grip. It's too skinny. It's also very wide compared to the default Switch. It's very center-heavy and doesn't make it the most comfortable experience, but it's definitely better than the Joy Cons
I've missed playing in handheld. I haven't played handheld in years due to stick drift. So now, I'm exclusively playing in handheld lol. Unfortunately, battery lasts like 3 hours, so I'm very frequently interrupted
If there's a Splir Pad Pro grip I can buy for docked, I might grab it. I'm making use out of my Turbo and back buttons (Sticks are binded to back buttons) and would rather not use my Pro Con in this game
Glad you're loving them!
So like in pokemon scarlet I'm farming money from the academy and I only need to press a. Will this just do it for me if I press it down once?
Yeah
Split pad or just a zengrip pro? Just got an oled and the cramping isn't bad but I do get fatigue. I don't mind joycons, but I really use the switch in handheld 98% of the time so a pro controller is kinda a flop for me.
That's a very good question because I love the ZenGrip Pro! If you don't mind the smaller JoyCon joysticks then the ZenGrip Pro is awesome, very comfortable in my opinion but if you want larger more accurate joysticks and the benefit of turbo/back paddles then the Hori is the one to go for. Ultimately I'd probably just go for whatever is cheapest
It’s kinda hard to put them on and take off in my oled
So if it's connected onto the switch screen they're wireless? Or do you still have to have it corded
If they're on the Switch in handheld mode they don't need to be connected to the dock if that's what you mean.
@@128KB that is, I thank you sir
I tried these with my Switch, and found that they drained less battery, probably because the Switch wasn't constantly topping up the batteries in the joy-cons?
Possibly but the collective battery mAh is greater with Joy-Cons attached, is possible the Joy-Cons could use more battery though
I noticed something with this pad. The home button doesn’t seem to power on the system from sleep. Does this sound familiar to anyone that has the split pad pro? It will put the system to sleep. Just not wake it up
Great video bro it’s been awhile since I’ve watched a video from you sorry about that lol I get busy. But I think because of the binbok especially the bigger ones that the split pad are no longer needed in my opinion lol also the binbok is cheaper but I will say one thing the hori split pad have allot of nice versions with beautiful artwork especially the new Pokémon ones and they are officially licensed by Nintendo so they are easy to find in stores like target or Walmart or something
Thank you! Ah don't apologise, we've all got busy lives :) yeah the BinBok full sized ones are great alternatives! I really like some of those designs on the Hori though!
@@128KB I got the new binbok red and blue ones and they are amazing and they fixed allot of the problems especially the dpad. I was almost thinking of getting the hori split pad Pokémon version because it looks so good and just keep it as a collectors item lol but it’s so expensive
I can't imagine how big the switch would be with these, it's large enogh as it is
It's large! That's great for those that have higher hands or get cramp with playing with the Joy-Cons though
Does the hori split pad wiggle much when attached to the switch?
Mine do slightly on one side
Having a hard time deciding between the Hori and the other off brands like Doge and Nexigo.
Hori seems more portable and cases are made for them. Plus officially licensed.
The Hori have amazing joystick accuracy, I'm not familiar with those other ones having not tested them before so I'd suggest the Hori
i have it, it is very comfortable when playing
Glad you enjoy it!
All I wanted to know is if the joy cons are as accurate as ps5 or Xbox one joy cons , thank you ❤
Can that controller be played wireless like off the switch pad?
Can't be used wirelessly, either connected directly to the Switch or via the attachment as a wired controller
Buy them if you play a lot of 3rd party games on switch me I do have them but I mostly play 1st party switch games and the joy con's are enough but I recently started playing overwatch 2 on switch whenever I'm not able to on ps5 and it just doesn't work well with joy con's in hand held
Yeah these are great for stuff like that
I have a HORI Split Pad Pro. It's pretty good for SSBU or RE4 on the go. There's no way I'm gonna be able to complete a BOTW shrine requiring gyro controls on the Switch in portable mode anyway; I'd be flipping the Switch and losing sight of the gyro puzzles or mazes with the screen facing away.
Only thing that I could really complain any bit about concerning this product is that my ring and pinky fingers kind of overflow the joycons somewhat.
Yeah good points there!
I ended up getting this because my joycon are drifting
Very comfortable indeed
I got nine for Christmas four months later there kind of drifting down is anyone had this problem?
im not much to comment, but with the quality of your videos, hell ya im gonna interact with the algorithim
You have no idea how much I appreciate that. Thank you
Are these good to play and grind online mode on smash bros ultimate?
Maybe someone else can chime in here, sadly I don't play Smash!
I have had mine for about 2 months and I love them. Can't stand the joycons as I have large hands.
Glad you're enjoying them!
Can you dock the console with these attached?
Yeah, I have!
I just bought mine and with my oled system and dock, I actually cannot dock it with them attached! Even if I attempt to dock them on the older dock which is slightly more narrow. I guess only those with the og switch can dock them because of its ever so slightly snaller profile. A little disappointed but oh well. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
@@TheInfiniteNine I don’t know what your doing wrong but I have an oled switch and mine docks perfectly with the hori split pad pro attached to the switch! I’m thinking this may be more of a user issue than a product issue…
@mackclodfelter7220 I'm thinking it's a slight variation in tolerances between each product. I still try it every now and then and still doesn't fit. It's the front edge that jut upwards from the edge of the screen that rub against the edge of the front plate of the dock. Btw I have a split pad compact and that docks just fine.
Yeah and they drift just like official joycons sell that official stamp of approvals really really great feels so good feels so useful sarcasm so thick it's Bulletproof

Mine broke after just 3 months. Left stick doesn't work anymore.
Bah that's annoying, definitely contact Hori if that's the case

@@edwinawesome1374 oh awesome! You'll love both I'm sure, they both have pros and cons that I go over in the video :) it'll be up over the few days or next week no doubt
I actually suggest getting a Coiorvis which is the wireless version of Mobapad with fixed back buttons. Mobapad's back buttons trigger a turbo loop when you double-press them which is a problem.
I bought ones last November had to replace (GameStop warranty) in April because they kept disconnecting....I think they shot the actual rail pins...put an old joycon in whose pair died and it won't even read it....I

It's absolutely fine, they have standoffs on the back to support it. Sadly I don't remember what the stand is, it's fully metal and I got it when the switch released but never seen one since and has no branding on it anywhere

Thanks but we have no need to redesign our logo, cheers
oh dude no thats not how the battery works on the switch brother. the batteries in regular joy cons will actually drain the switch more. and even more if you are using the gyro motion or rumble. the joy cons constantly charge themselves while connected to the switch, the split pad pros do not. so they actually dont really drain any battery at all.
1:30 being licensed by Nintendo doesn't mean shit case and point: The Speedboard
Example 2: the Roll n Rocker (alright I don't know if this was licensed but the fucking speedboard was)
Was that officially licensed? I have no experience with that but I can say the Hori compared to random China joycons will be more consistent in quality
@@128KB it was, it was licensed by Nintendo. The horipad is actually good though. But licensed by Nintendo means basically nothing tbh
I'm on the fence. I see more reviews from third party options were alot better. Even cheapo amazon and Walmart online models got better reviews then these did. Kinda sad but they should be good. My biggest gripe is my hands are large and I can't even hold the switch longer then a few minutes before my hands cramp and hurt alot.
People only complain about these due to lack of wireless/rumble/gyro/NFC but the actual quality exceeds that of most 3rd party alternatives. Depends if you want extra features or not.

Precisely, that's why at the end I said just get the cheapest ones you can rather than waste money on the design haha they're good joycons though!
I have two pairs of split pad pros and I can confirm, the joysticks are in fact the biggest selling point. I'm very picky when it comes to joysticks. Call me crazy, but I also have two 8bitdo controllers (Pro 2 and SN30 pro plus) and they have TERRIBLE joysticks, they make this cracking sound when you do "circles", pretty noticable input lag, mushy and creaking back buttons (Pro 2) despite being hyped to death by people...

I just couldn´t stand the joycons because of the analog drifting. Since the Switch launched, lots of complaints about it everywhere. Mine were OK for 1 - 2 years. Then drifting started. Couldn´t relax in my games with left joystick drifting. That´s the only reason I´ll always buy Hiro or other products for the Switch. Their analogs works properly. Shame on Nintendo they clearly don´t give a **** about joycons drifting and I won´t spend good money on nintendo overpriced and clearly flawed Joycons over and over again. Long live Hori Split Pad Pro. Yes, I had to think of the new case for my Switch to protect it from the dust since it´s much bigger with Hori, but that was a small task.
Are there no ppl from America doing this all these dam accents this guy beatem ups wtf
I can do some horrendous American accents if that will make you feel better.
Not me reaserching this controllers to play animal crossing
Awesome 😁
Just bough a switch, and extremely frustrated with FPS in handlheld. Does this help with FPS aiming? Wasted much money on FPS games. I think it's because the joycon handles are so tiny, making it impossible to aim. Many games I want but are simply unplayable. Anybody else experience this? Thanks.
These are the best joycon alternatives for FPS games, these are super accurate joysticks with zero deadzone!
@@128KB truly appreciate the reply. Thank you.
These aren’t great for smash. They have a joystick delay when playing smash.
I never noticed such a thing.
Ah damn I've not spoken to anyone with that issue before
@@styromaniac6967 @128KB the control stick circumference is actually wider than the Pro Controllers by a tad bit. You have less of advantage with someone who’s playing with a GC controller or Pro Controller.
Can i play zelda botw with these badboy?
Not using motion controls sadly but it is playable
