    Movie Description:
"The NeverEnding Story" is a classic fantasy novel written by German author Michael Ende. First published in 1979, the book tells the tale of a young boy named Bastian Balthazar Bux who is struggling to find his place in the world. One day, he stumbles upon an old book called "The NeverEnding Story" and becomes entranced by its magical tale. The story within the story is set in the fantastical land of Fantasia and follows the journey of a young warrior named Atreyu as he sets out to save the land from being consumed by the Nothing, a mysterious force that threatens to destroy everything. Along the way, Atreyu encounters a variety of colorful creatures and experiences many adventures, ultimately leading to a showdown with the source of the Nothing. Throughout the book, the boundary between Bastian's reality and the fantastical world of the story becomes increasingly blurred, leading to a powerful message about the power of imagination and the importance of storytelling.

The film is not a metaphor. They are thousands. New metaphors are found to this day. It is the deepest movie ever. The protagonist of the story is not atreyu or bastian, it is you.
About the metaphors: the swamp is a metaphor for the death of depression, atreyu's mourning is a metaphor for bastian's mourning for his mother, atreyu finds murals of his story because the story has already happened, nothingness is the lack of imagination and you are the creator of nothingness, because while you watch the movie you imagine nothingness and thus it manages to exist, in your mind

"But I can't, I have to keep my feet on the ground!"
"Call my name. Bastian, please! Save us!"
"All right! I'll do it! I'll save you! I will do what I dream! ... MOONCHILD!"
Fun Fact: The original Auryn for this film now hangs in an enclosed glass display in Steven Spielberg's office.
Luck Dragon Fact: Falkor is actually a 43-foot long motorized creature with 6,000 plastic scales and pink feather-fur. His head is three feet tall and long and has a long tongue in the mouth. You can "ride" on Falcor's back on location at the Bavaria Filmpark in Munich, Germany.
Authentic Battle Scars Fact: Noah Hathaway was hurt three times during the making of the movie. While learning to ride a horse, his horse threw him off, then stepped on him. While shooting the Swamp Of Sadness drowning sequence, his leg got caught on the elevator and he was pulled under water. He was unconscious by the time he was brought to the surface. Noah Hathaway then almost lost an eye during the fight-scene versus Gmork. One of the claws on his giant paws poked him in the face. The robot was also so heavy that he lost his breath as well when he was hit to the ground by it. They only made one shot due to the risk that he would get seriously wounded. Noah Hathaway now owns and operates a tattoo parlor in Los Angeles, California (as far as I know) with his wife and he loves talking to fans of the movie.

Ask any 1980s kid what is a traumatizing movie scene and most of them will list this film and the scene with the dying horse. As someone who was a kid in the 1980s, I can definitely say that scene still is difficult to watch even as an adult rewatching this movie.
After I found out the movie was based on a book, I sought out the book at my local library. It took awhile to checkout because it was suddenly popular, but it’s definitely an……interesting read. It’s definitely the type of book that due to how it’s written is a….unique experience. I did watch the sequel films, but didn’t enjoy them as much as this one. The second partially strays from the book a bit, but basically completes the book. I was a big fan of actor Jonathan Brandis which is why I watched it to begin with. I was a teen by the time the third one came out. Its story has nothing to do with the book at all and I basically watched it because it starred the actor who was in the movie Free Willy which was popular. It’s my least favorite of the films.
It’s actually good you watched this since Disney announced they were remaking the film. That announcement has been met with mixed reviews. Folks like myself who’ve read the book are hopeful more from the book will be included while folks who’ve only seen the film worry that the remake might destroy a beloved film from their childhood. To be fair, those of us who’ve read the book also share that worry.
The actor who played Bastien also starred in a favorite family film of mine from the 1980s: D.A.R.Y.L. He was also in Cocoon films, but I don’t really remember those. I believe he won an award for his role in D.A.R.Y.L.
I think that your rating of the film is fair. You’re watching it as an adult and the film was specifically made and marketed to kids. Even as an adult rewatching it when showing my niece or with friends’ kids I’ll admit to the film not keeping my attention as it did when I was a kid. It’s a slower paced adventure film and I find myself usually watching and just waiting for my favorite scenes to come on (and dreading the one scene mentioned earlier in my comment). So I understand why you’d rate it the way you did. But now if the film comes up in conversation, you’ll know what people are talking about. Likewise if someone mentions the book, this film basically covers the major points in the first half of the book so you have some context to the conversation. Honestly there were so many films that were either based on books or got a book form in the 1980s that I feel like it was just a ploy to get kids to read (well that and Pizza Hut’s Book It program and the March of Dimes Reading Program…Pizza Hut you earned a personal pan pizza after reading so many books and March of Dimes awarded medals of gold, silver, and bronze for reading a certain number of books and raising money for them; you had family sponsor you and they basically donated a certain amount of money for each book you read).
Great video! I’ll admit whenever you started reference Star Wars locales a part of me was like: “see I’m not the only one who thinks like this” since as a kid when first watching it I had seem the Star Wars films and was obsessed with them and so made similar comparisons to Dagobah, Tattoine, etc. LOL Nice to see others continuing to do that many years later! As the old saying goes: great minds think alike. :-)

The movie was technically a German production (which is why some scenes have German words like the book cover) and the version you watched was the extended German version. It was also the most expensive German production at the time with a $27,000,000 budget. The International version snipped a few things to make the pacing faster, (thanks to Steven Spielberg who was involved with the re-edits) and some re-dubs too. In addition the iconic Limahl song (the pop song from Stranger Things) was in the American release but not the one you saw.
I would partly consider this a cult following because it actually was a flop in the US (partly because it was in competition with GHOSTBUSTERS, GREMLINS, MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN, and THE KARATE KID. So there was some competition.) But in Germany, it was a huge hit with a $100M. Critics at the time also pointed like what you mentioned that some of the effects looked iffy and ran too long. (But then again, critics are adults and this film was never meant for them and that was the point. Adults lose hope and dreams and their childhood does from adulthood. Much like The Nothing.) But the movie did get two sequels years later to mixed to negative results, but I think you should check out the sequel someday and see where it compares to your thoughts on the first film.

As this is the German cut of the movie with the English dub (evidenced by the fact the cover of the book is ‘Die unendliche Geschichte’ and not ‘The Neverending Story’, I wonder if you missed out on the awesome English soundtrack. The English soundtrack had a tonne more synth whereas the German instrumentation was more classically based. It is hard to tell as you had the audio a tad muted when the initial group of characters are approaching the ivory tower, but normally that scene is popping with a brilliant synth piece and so far I haven’t heard you comment that you were right / that you are loving the music. If that is the case, listen to the US release of the soundtrack on CZcams, because if you love 80’s synth, you’d love the Neverending Story’s US release OST.

I saw it when it came out, and it was one of my formative fantasy films, but I've seen it at a revival screening about 5 years ago... something about the scale of it just works better on the big screen with an audience... yes the FX are dated, but in some ways they're more convincing since it's all practical.

Interesting fact, I don't know how you got a hold of your version of Neverending Story, but the version you watched was the European one. It was a German production, and got Warner involved to make final touches, and the U.S.A. edit. The biggest changes is that a few scenes were cut down a bit, and the music, which was composed by two people. The European version used more of Klaus Doldinger's music, which was very orchestral, where as the U.S. version used more of Giorgio Moroder's music, which while keeping some part's of Klaus's orchestral notes, also pushed it sound a bit more "modern" which did inspire a lot of sound tracks for years to come.
Also rest of comments could correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there was ever a ride, but I feel like I could recall at least a life size model of Falkor that kids could sit on at one of the theme parks for photo ops for quite a while.

Neverending Story is very much a movie meant for kids. If you first watched it as a kid then it's great and nostalgic. If you first watched it as an adult then it's going to be hard to see past the cheese, not so great acting, and not exactly seamless VFX. As a kid those things don't really get in the way of enjoying the movie at all, but as an adult they're kind of jarring and take you out of the movie a bit. It's a cult classic for a reason, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as some other cult classic 80s movies aimed at kids, like The Goonies, which I think can be thoroughly enjoyed by adults even if they didn't watch them as kids.
I do really like the themes of imagination being important, how a good book may be able to help you process bad things that are going on in your life (like the swamp being a metaphor for grief and despair), and the meta aspect of Bastian observing Fantasia's story while we're observing Bastian's story (and the implications that we both change and are changed by the stories we read/hear/watch).

I know I'm late but I think you should read the book because this is only half of the story. and the second movie doesn't really follow the plot of the book. the second half of the book focuses on bastion rebuilding fantasia with his wishes and how that influences and changes him.

I definitely think this doesn't quite work if you're not a kid when you first watch it. Tbh I can't stand Bastion's acting. lol And it's pretty heavy handed on the Nothing metaphor of "kids these days don't have imaginations anymore!" which was a very common plot at the time. But I really loved it as a kid! It's a lot darker and mind bendy than anything I'd seen before.

Yeah people seem to have SUPER fond memories of this movie, and I think I'm definitely missing a piece of the puzzle. But I still enjoyed it!

This movie os based off of a German book. Most of the cast was German, hence why some words don't match what the lips say.
This was also my go to home from school sick movie in the 80's.

I tried so hard to figure out if it was dubbed or not but I couldn't really tell. I guess I was right about it being dubbed. I cut out a whole section of me questioning it lol

I enjoyed this video… but you must have watched a European version. The American version has all the synth you wanted and a great theme song. The music on the American version makes for a much different experience.
