- Night Train was produced in Nashville from TV station WLAC Channel 5 and aired from 1964 - 1967. The show was hosted by Noble Blackwell. On this edition we have the talents of Buddy and Stacey, Jimmy Church, The Avons, Spidels, Tony Clarke, Pamela Releford and several other acts. The picture & sound quality are a bit rough on this one but I know you'll enjoy the program.

I hope everyone is thankful to have this up on youtube. It won't go away now. How wonderful to have this archive!
The sign of things to come. Hendrix doing his thing on that old Fender and nobody noticed.
Hendrix's most commonly recognized (guitar) style that made him (to that time) wholly unique was explosively expressive, and for the most part, improvisationally inspired (and abstractly derived from the melody). That type of playing would not be allowed or encouraged as an accompanist. as an accompanist, one is required to support the main act, usually a vocalist. That job is to make the vocalist look/sound good. barney kessel, who was the best of all the wrecking crew's guitarists, was one of the greats on jazz guitar. He was legendary. but as a wrecking crew member, his job was totally different than his job when soloing on a jazz composition, or even as a jazz accompanist. here is an album in which Barney's incredibly restrained style of playing makes the entire album a classic: it certainly wasn't due to anything Julie London did. lol
Hendrix was a unique talent, much like an abstract expressionist (in painting). By and large, if abstract expressionists were required to paint figurative scenes, they were less than impressive (look up rothko's figurative art or jackson pollock's non abstract art. it's pedestrian stuff). But when their abstracted/expressionistic work is taken in, it's hard to deny their talent/genius. Hendrix was like that, not terribly impressive in traditional roles as a guitarist., eg., he couldn't play classical guitar, jazz, commercial jingles, etc., but he was extraordinarily original and athletic with regards to improvisational rock music being expressionistically and abstractly presented.
I don't think it's really a matter of being appreciated.

Jeez, that Noble Blackwell fella was butter smooth. And his suit game was impeccable, I must say.
RIP
Everybody's got their groovething on in Shotgun, even Jimi!

20:40 Loving this wonderful performance ... tried to find out more about the Hi Tones, but no luck.
Hello Doris. I agree it is a wonderful performance in my view the best piece in the entire show. I've listened to this many times. Beautiful. I'd love to get a hold of that track : 'Come Fly With Me' - can it be bought from anywhere? Thanks

@@zesty9815 Brilliant! I was searching for "The Hi-Tones" on Google which is why I couldn't find anything. I'm in the UK too and love a bit of Northern Soul (although I'm not hardcore). Really interesting biographical material about these guys. The harmonies on "Come Fly With Me" are beautiful. I'll definitely check out their other stuff. If you ever hear of a re-release of CFWM or the masters becoming available, please let me know! Thanks again
I couldn't wait for the show Night Train come on.R. I. P Mr Blackwell enjoy you hosting Night Train and its was live music.
These old clips from the older shows, especially from the 60's should be cherished for all time.
Holy macaroni, I cannot thank you enough for this TREASURE!! What an awesome lesson in great American music.
Seldom seen two guys having so much fun !!
I used to stay up late and watch this show as a youngster; always a good show
Night Train a talent show my mom would never miss they could never put anything on like this theses days
*..the Song “ Shot Gun” (1st song) would be banned by the Communist Democratic Left..*
THIS IS THE PART of CZcams I love!!!! Much RESPECT to the uploader & all the SINGERS & MUSICIANS featured! GOD BLESS YALL!
Noble Blackwell my uncle was the best blackhost in the 60's ever. Love you always rest in peace your niece Theresa Blackwell
Very charming man.
Was this the inspiration for Soul Train? I grew up with the Soul Train show. I loved funk and Motown. Not to mention all of the beautiful girls.
@@fukhue8226 Correct...
I remember him, he was teflon slick. The best at what he did obviously. Had the best name too. "Noble Blackwell", can't beat that one!
What’s a blackhost?
Dynamite...fine soulful saturated performances including the classy voice of Ray Pollard who sang lead for the Wanderers on " There Is No Greater Love " and so many fine recordings....basically this entire show is a treasure of pure natural talents .
One of the best shows i wish tv was like this now
Peggy Gaines does a wonderful version of " One Step " nice job by the band and singers.
Watched Night Train as a child every Saturday night in Clarksville Tn. Looked forward to it every week. Best music, nothing like now days.
So the king casuals and johnny Jones was the house band, I noticed only jimmy on one song, and what looks like Johnny on the guitar the rest of the show
seems i was late for the ride on the night train. came for jimi but stayed for some good music and entertainment!
Wow, Jackie Shane was a tremendous talent! Whoever's drumming for her was boss, too!
I remember watching this when I was 9. 1965 in Hopkinsville Ky
Sunday night we all 10 kids. Couldn't wait😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😊😊
Jimi was distinguished even as a backup act... A real star
Yeah. He was on a Journey. A pilgrimage.Putting in his dues. Soaking up the feel of the Scene. Working on a recipe like a young gun. A matter of time.
Looks like Jimmi broke a Guitar string after 1:30 can see him grab it and push it away.
@@lioncurlew Nope, that was one of his stage moves running the back of his arm up and down the neck. He does it again with the back of his hand around 2:33. You can also hear him deviating from the standard riff he was supposed to be playing during the sax solo. It was these kinds of things that drew attention to himself that got him fired from a lot of bands. Only the Isley Brothers and Curtis Knight encouraged him to be himself and highlighted his playing in their stage shows. He was fired by Little Richards brother who was the band manager for constantly being late, not because he was showing Little Richard up by wearing a fancy shirt as Richard liked to tell the story. Even when he had a good job like the Isley's or playing with King Curtis, he would just stop showing up for gigs and disappear without a word. It was around this time that he stopped playing R&B gigs and put together his own band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames and became the house band at the Cafe Wah where Linda Keith brought Chas Chandler to see him and by 1966 he was in England with a new name and a new band and new fame.
@@lioncurlew it was a fly on the sixth fret.
@@kkjhn41 And I love it that he still does it when he's on his own for all to see.
I sat in my bedroom in Huntsville, Alabama, and watched this show every Saturday night I was not out clubbing at the Holiday Inn. Little Richard appeared on this show many times. Of course...he was attending theological seminary just a few miles to the south. Thank you for sharing this!
What theological seminary was lil richard attemding? American baptist
This is a fabulous program. Agreed! Thank you for sharing.

GREAT! MORE! MORE!
you listen real close to the opening act you can hear jimi tearing it up with his licks during the horn stabs while still holding down the rhythm guitar
Good ear most people don't even notice what he was doing.
Classic. Now this is soul music at its finest. Jimmy!!!!
Good music! I enjoyed watching this, no gimmicks just talent.
This is local TV at it's best.
This is the first ever video of Jimi Hendri on the first song awesome
Wow, the smooth, beautiful voice of Ray Pollard (former lead of the Wanderers)...what a treat!
Tony Clarke had a fair size hit in 66 with "The Entertainer"..
Man, I caught Hendrix right off the bat. Look how he's running his hand along the guitar upside down! I knew of his background but didn't realize he was on this song.
Yeah itching to cut loose!
Hungry cat locking into the groove. Learning the craft. Can hear the tapestry in the jazzy fills. The showmanship like he was out to be a band leader. Guess it was meant to be.
My GOD man!,what have you done!? I'm only 37 and I love this...I mean walking the dog? that shit was sick! Real raw talent...
When musicians used their talents not auto tune.😁
Jackie Shane.. transgendered superstar!
That was Jackie Shane and was much more polished than he showed on this song.Listen on CZcams to some of his live stuff from Toronto days.An unreal act was Jackie Shane.
Look at he guitarist on the left...THAT'S JIMI HENDRIX!
I saw him immediately!
sound engineers turned him down, prevent him going off on 1, taking over the whole show, classic..
sure is
mamachip yes it is!YEAH!
@@simonbeckford3025 thats why Little Richard had to let Jimi go from his band: back up musicians had to stay in the background, not play guitar with their teeth upstaging the star! lol
I have weak, but memories of this show coming on Channel 5. I was about 2-3 years old, and my mother trying to rock me to sleep and this show was on (I think) about 11 PM on Saturday Nights. Nobel Blackwell was the General Manager for WVOL-AM 1470 back then as well.
I am a White Guy that ended up working at WVOL, and playing the "Soul Oldies", from 12 Midnight to 6 AM on the week-ends. I loved every minute of it. I will be 49, May 7th, 2013, and I miss WVOL, playing the Oldies live in the 80s.
I remember this...❤️
also one of the featured guitar players (backing musician) was Local favorite Johnny Jones. He was my favorite, and then we can't forget the great Ironing Board Sam, and the wonderful Soul Sisters :-)
You can tell Jimi Hendrix got alot of his trademark movements from playing with Sam and Dave
The Spidels were very smooth and cool, here showing how its done...
I am mindblown at the sheer amount of talent displayed here.
I can't say enough about how great this video is! WOW! James Crawford, Tony Clarke, The High-Tones, Jackie Shane(!!), etc….Everyone on here delivered gold! Thanks for posting this!!!!
Jimi Hendrix playing the Bass!!!!
bassbug62PB
Jimi's not playing bass. He's farthest to the left playing lead.
@@bassbug62PB jimi is lead. this is his earliest known recording
@@patricktoth322 Jimi's also hamming this up. Check 1:58 and 2:57. At the later one, the lyric is "Do the turn, yeah!" and then Jimi gives some sort of hand motion in the background.
Jackie Shane I remember her. One of the first transgender performers, she was a great singer. Died about a year ago. R.I.P.
2:34 Early Jimi Hendrix showmanship :)
Those Brothers had that hair done up, baby!
What a fascinating show! Kind of a mixed bag with some spectacular voices and some great music, mixed with some bizarre acts and moments. Love some of the pure soul voices, the fried, dried and laid on the side hair and other styling.
some sweet soul and rnb here, love it
The great Jimi Hendrix on Guitar. Left side of the band, in the back, on the end
Just see him on the first song I think?
This is new to me! This is before soul train! I never knew thanks for sharing and educating black history!
Jimmy Church, who started performing at 3:43, reminds one of the one and only Jackie Wilson.
Enjoyed this very much. Thanks for uploading. You can never lose with old school soul. :)
Lord I had forgotten all about the night train show! This is great!
This show was syndicated in other markets...I remember seeing it late Friday/early Saturday at 1 am on WAVE-TV, Louisville. I was only 10 when it started in '64 and sneaked up to see it on the big TV downstairs. Of course, by the end of the show the whole family was watching with me. Didn't get much Soul on TV then-had to watch it as you caught it!
Is it just me? Artists at those times looked so good looking.
Great footage thanks for sharing !
Wow. Just wow.
Thats Jimi at the back moving out of time with the other musicians . Listening to his own inner groove . Soon James soon they'll be listening to you
Looks like Jimi is TOTALLY in step with his band mates...maybe my eyes decive me...
This is how its done guys,,,this is called "A Show"
Sweet soul music
1st concert I've been to in years - & I enjoyed it immensely - thanks for this amazin post :)
The brothers are STEPPIN' on CC Rider! Tight performance all around.
Wow, this great music. Thanks for sharing. Love it.
Yep, that's Jimi Hendrix on rhythm guitar behind the first act, Junior Walker 'Shotgun'
Johnny Jones the big dude playing that Gibson Guitar
Supremes cover...pretty cool even so. so much talent that we on the west coast never even knew existed. Always pretty geographic-centric thinking that all there is was what was around me... Love this technology and all who share these posts...Ed
That's Jimi Hendrix on the left playing left handed guitar on the first song, "Shotgun" with the Little Richard band. Check him out!
Steve Riddle You're right, Steve! He must have left Little Richard's Upsetters Band in 1964 or early '65.
+Steve Riddle ISNT THAT BILLY COX ON BASS WITH ANOTHER GROUP ON THIS SHOW ALSO WITH LEED SINGER FRONTING BAND ITS CALLED IF YOU DONT WORK?
+stuart dinkes I'll have to check that video again Stuart. You know, I have a vast collection of R&B songs but have never heard of any of the artists on that Night Train video. Thanks so much for your interest in the History of Rock & Roll.
I co-DJ Oldies radio shows on KVMR-FM. You can get it on the Internet. It's all Oldies, R&B, Rock & Roll, Blues, Country, Jazz, Cajun, Etc.
Later Man, RoCk & RoLL SteVe
+Steve Riddle IM PRETTY SURE ITS BILLY COX ON BASS IF YOU LOOK CLOSLEY ON IF YOU DONT WORK YOU DONT EAT JAMES CROWFORD! ITS HIS STYLE OF BASS PLAYING TO THE WAY HES HOLDING IT!!
Steve Riddle
O M G !
never heard of jimmy church, he's good.
is it probably Wilson Pickett? using a stage name like Travis Johnson (Buddy and Stacey) singing in the first tune
John Brown nope,I know what Wilson looks like, this isn't him. but this guy was good.
yeah I get it he is good
I do not know if he made more impact in the biz but they are all spectacular perfornances
John Brown definitely.
the HTs seem to foreshadow Fifth Dimension's sound and vibe - fabulous harmonies!!
Great little piece of nostalgia !
i'm only one step, very nice song wouldn't mind redoing it nowaday
I have never heard of this show it's so good to see something on the internet that I didn't know exist. It's a great entertainment show.
Excellent stuff - Thank you
The Jackie Shane segment is a real standout as well!
23:39...You Don't Work, You Can't Eat, James Crawford....so cool, so good.
+Clipstone Films IF YOU LOOK CLOSLEY ON JAMES CROWFORD IF YOU DONT WORK YOU DONT EAT THATS BILLY COX ON BASS YOU PLAYED WITH JIMI. BILLY HUNG OUT THERE IN NASHVILLE AFTER HIS SERVICE DUTY IN THE ARMY.
+stuart dinkes Jimi and Billy were both in the house band on Night Train. What I really wanna see is Jimi's instrumental version of Bo Diddley's "Road Runner". Seriously badass surf-y version. That's the holy grail of Hendrix footage for me. Saw it one late night in '65 with my own two eyes. If anyone knows anything about this lemme know.
+Stephen Peterman THE ONLY THING I SAW JIMI ON WAS SHOTGUN HERE ON THIS SHOW. WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM DO ROAD RUNNER. BILLY COX IS ALSO ON THE BEAT SHOW IN TEXAS IN IN 1966 ALSO ON CZcams! BACKING FREDDIE KING, BARBARA LYNN AND OTHERS THAT WAS A GOOD SHOW ALSO, BUT DONT KNOW IF JIMI EVER PLAYED THERE OR WAS GONE TO ENGLAND BY THAT TIME.
That's Music!
XXX
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!
You can already see Jimmi chafing against those Motown constraints.
thanks so much for this treasure!
That's Jimi!
Check the manicure on the Spidels lead singer at 36:07.
Great performances though.
Thank you for uploading this!!
this the first soul train even down to dat host with the most big respect for mr.don cornelius
Hey! I used to watch this! But I had no memory of it at all
until I saw it here on youtube! It was on late at night, and had
black performers.
Very nice
oh my god it s very beautiful..........
The Spidels So In Love, my goodness! I love this classic doo wop sound!! Lead singer is silky smooth and the background singers are killing it. Those high notes they're hitting are on point! Where my baby at?!
What a fantastic show. I love everything about it; the title, the emcee, Jimi Hendrix in the background with the rest of the b-grade acts. I wonder what happened to all these people?
Buelligan88 These acts are, most definitely, NOT "b-grade." These acts are phenomenal artists making phenomenal music. Just a friendly reminder that there's more to music than riff/"classic" rock.
I like anchovies.
@@damonlevine Absolutely! Jackie was brilliant.
Yes we are!!! It's awesome!
❤ Beautiful! Memories of watching this!
I'm surprised The High Tones didn't get mentioned more. They sounded good singing "Come Fly With Me." Not much info online about them, though below it is mentioned that the guy in the middle passed away. I'd like to hear more about the group.
Wow!
I'm only here for 20:53. Always come back for this magic.
love "Back in my arms again" great song forever! loved their version!
shes a good singer
Wonderful music, much of this 'sound' was the basis of what became known as Northern Soul in the UK.
I see Jimmy Hendrix!!
Watched this in my youth...WLAC ..Nashville, Tennessee
Thanks for sharing 😊
That’s a young Jimi Hendrix on the Fender Stratocaster in Little Richard’s band playing “Shotgun”. This is classic R&B from the Golden Era!
Fender Jazzmaster.
Thank you for this!!!!
Thats JIMI on the opening song ...Shot Gun with Buddy and Stacy ...
No Autotune required.....this is heaven. And then some Jimi laying out the future on a borrowed guitar(and slaying Eric Clapton already)👍👍
what a drummer, fantastic house band, would be great even if there was no Jimi
The great Jimi Hendrix showing his talents in his early days, notice how he whips the bass strings @1:36 you didn't see the guitarist doing that in those days!
Es un lujo ver a Jimi Hendrix en sus inicios, acompañando a este par de excelentes cantantes y bailarines del Soul. se puede observar a Jimi haciendo movimientos en la guitarra que repetiría ya siendo estrella del Rock
Locura, ¿no?
Given that this clip began with color bars shown in black-and-white, I suspect this this program was originally shot on color videotape but that this is a black-and-white kinescope, possibly the only recording left of this program.
