why do you want people to deliberately burn their potaits, man... this is probably a good way of tasting burnt potato on your dry saltless egg... along with ash and smoke. i personally like my eggs sunny side up.

i would not consume a diet of potatoes... the night shade, although harmless, will build up within the body over time. try eating unbleached pasta and whole grain breads. Also nice, green leafy things. there are plenty in the wild.

But when times are hard potato on its own will keep you alive as there are many ways to make a meal from potatoes and little else. Potatoes rule. BuckGreywolfe Use one of those huge flat rocks as a griddle to cook the egg, or make a cup from leaves or a green reed cook the potato in just like the potato, or fill a hole/container of some kind with water and heat stones in the fire to put in the water to bring it to boiling and poach the egg in the boiling water, etc etc etc. In other words you are better off using the potato as FOOD rather than as a container. HOWEVER, at home in your kitchen using your oven this could be a base for some interesting recipes. Bacon n eggs in a baked potato maybe :D

So many things about this clip makes me rage. Settling on just one though: 'Have a potato, a spoon and three matches'. - Or, take the egg, set it on the spoon, and cook directly in the coals. Use matches to light three fires at some other point. Eat potato when bored.

As many comments as I see below questioning/stating how is this related to survival (and I understand the author already states it's not a survival video), I can actually see some survival benefits to it. With the addition of foil, you could cook up 3-6 of these, wrap them, and keep them close to your core for added warmth (every bit helps) and calories while traveling. No need to boil water, a days food in 20 min of prep, obviously going to munch the raw potato leftovers as well etc etc. Survival is all about thinking outside the box, and getting the most out of every asset you have or forage across....
Next, you could show us how to cook smoked salmon on a flattened piece of drainage pipe a truck ran over, using a pit fire in the rocks on the side of a bridge north of Whitehorse......

yeah,nice.. but in Italy when we want to cook an egg, we use a room in the house we call kitchen, and we use an object burns gas we call gas cooker, and we don't use a potato but we use a metal object we call pot... is much better and in 5 minutes you can eat...

I was thinking the same thing. its a waste of the potato. Wrap it in foil so you can eat a potato with an egg inside. But the way you did it the potato is covered in charcoal and is inedible. Plus I wouldn;t ahve throw out the insides you scooped out. why waste food?
Thanks for this video. You’ve inspired me, as I love Cooking in My Homemade Fire Pit. Steps… 1. scrub my potatoes 2. scoop the insides and shred them for hash-browns, which will fry up nicely in my covered cast-iron skillet. 3. coat potatoes with oil, sea salt and pepper drop in the eggs with a pinch of minced garlic 4. roast them in a skillet. The entire dish will be deliciously edible...SMILE!!!
I guess if you don't have a pan and you are really hungry for an egg then this works. It isn't much of a survival tip when you throw the potato parts away. If I was going out in the woods with a potato, an egg, and a box of matches, I'd bring a bit of foil and cook it all. Just saying. A little charcoal in the meal won't hurt you either plus it can aid in keeping a stomach from being upset later. That is not sarcasm. If you've ever eaten food cooked in coals you eat it as it turns out, especially if your hungry.
NorthSurvival I thought that this was meant as a two-use of the potato. During the first round, one bakes the potato just as and then eats away the cooked potato inside and leaves just the shell. In round two, one just uses the empty ashy shell just like he used carved out fresh potato in this one.
I can't believe you think you a survivalist. Why would you sacrifice a perfectly good potato to bake an egg? You could have just roasted the egg in its own shell and had an egg AND a potato for breakfast.
The way he made fire, the way he wasted the potato, the way he opened the shell and the crown were the 3 matches he put on the top which surprisingly didn't burn for some reason (maybe he replaced them lol). There were just too many things done wrong.
Silver T The matches didn't ignite because there were no flames in direct contact with the match nor enough heat conduction. Not sure how much heat conduction is required to light a match. It wouldn't surprise me if you could touch a match head to a hot metal heat register without it combusting. I would guess that the surface of the metal would have to be red hot, so touching a match to a red stove burner, regardless of being gas or electric, the match would combust. There just wasn't enough heat surrounding the match head. If it were in the coals, however, another story. Goes to show how stable matches are.

yeah,nice.. but in Italy when we want to cook an egg, we use a room in the house we call kitchen, and we use an object burns gas we call gas cooker, and we don't use a potato but we use a metal object we call pot... is much better and in 5 minutes you can eat...

I was thinking the same thing. its a waste of the potato. Wrap it in foil so you can eat a potato with an egg inside. But the way you did it the potato is covered in charcoal and is inedible. Plus I wouldn;t ahve throw out the insides you scooped out. why waste food?

1. scrub my potatoes
2. scoop the insides and shred them for hash-browns, which will fry up nicely in my covered cast-iron skillet.
3. coat potatoes with oil, sea salt and pepper
drop in the eggs with a pinch of minced garlic
4. roast them in a skillet. The entire dish will be deliciously edible...SMILE!!!

I guess if you don't have a pan and you are really hungry for an egg then this works. It isn't much of a survival tip when you throw the potato parts away. If I was going out in the woods with a potato, an egg, and a box of matches, I'd bring a bit of foil and cook it all. Just saying.
A little charcoal in the meal won't hurt you either plus it can aid in keeping a stomach from being upset later. That is not sarcasm. If you've ever eaten food cooked in coals you eat it as it turns out, especially if your hungry.

NorthSurvival I thought that this was meant as a two-use of the potato. During the first round, one bakes the potato just as and then eats away the cooked potato inside and leaves just the shell. In round two, one just uses the empty ashy shell just like he used carved out fresh potato in this one.
You can live off potatos and milk until the day you die. So, the egg is really unimportant in the scheme of things IMO.

I can't believe you think you a survivalist. Why would you sacrifice a perfectly good potato to bake an egg? You could have just roasted the egg in its own shell and had an egg AND a potato for breakfast.

In a survival situation the inside of the potatoe could have been your dinner the night before.
The way he made fire, the way he wasted the potato, the way he opened the shell and the crown were the 3 matches he put on the top which surprisingly didn't burn for some reason (maybe he replaced them lol). There were just too many things done wrong.
Silver T The matches didn't ignite because there were no flames in direct contact with the match nor enough heat conduction. Not sure how much heat conduction is required to light a match. It wouldn't surprise me if you could touch a match head to a hot metal heat register without it combusting. I would guess that the surface of the metal would have to be red hot, so touching a match to a red stove burner, regardless of being gas or electric, the match would combust. There just wasn't enough heat surrounding the match head. If it were in the coals, however, another story. Goes to show how stable matches are.

It looks like most of the inside of the potato got cooked too, so you could probably eat all of the insides with the egg and just leave the outside charred shell.
