I have owned a large munster now for 3 years. Previously I owned 2 working spaniels and before that a black lab/German Shepard cross.
I have nothing but praise for this breed of dog. They are loyal and extremely well tempered, (i.e. great with kids, adults, dogs alike and even the dreaded vets) and are absolutely family orientated and love attention and petting.
As an outdoors person. This is possibly the most suited dog I have owned to hill walking and exploration and extended periods of wild camping. He is adventurous, capable and well adapted to cold and wet environments.
Indoors, his nature, is placid and almost comes across as boring at times but outdoors is where this breed truely comes into its own.
He does tend to range MUCH further than any other breed I have owned, which is expected of the large munster and can be disconcerting to new Munster owners and his recall is not the best, however, he was an older rescue when we got him. Which could attribute to his lack of recall.
He is extremely loyal by nature (not necessarily training) and fortunately he always returns. Unfortunately it is when he sees fit.
In my experience this breed can be somewhat vocal, highly independent/stubborn and very instinctual ( although, this could be attributed to him being an older rescue from a working farm)
This is most definatley a breed that needs plenty of both physical/mental stimulation (at least 1.5hours or 2 large walks a day) and a moderate level of weekly grooming.
Small apartment/working family owners may not be suitable for this breed (very similar to German pointers i.e. very active) but people who can give the large Munster the time, perseverance and are understanding to the breeds inbuilt instincts will be blessed with one of the most family friendly, loyal, adventurous and well tempered dogs I have ever had the pleasure of living with.
Again I am not in any way a dog trainer or specialist. These are just my experiences with this breeds of dog and any future, "RESPONSIBLE", dog owners should do their own research into different breeds and which is most suited to them and their situation
P.s. this breed does love to chase!

I’ve got a small Münsterländer and she is the best dog I’ve ever owned. She’s my working gun dog and I couldn’t ask for a better, more affectionate dog. Great with kids, other animals, super smart and very gentle.

As young company of boys back in 90s we had a dog like this that we took care and raised. It was in an abandon park and her brother puppies died it was the last so we rescue her. It was one of the most intelligent clever and survival instinct dogs i have seen ever. It was also leaving on the streets after she grow up eventually but every time following our company.
Extreme focus and speed and early identification of threat and a self confidence. So when i am ready i want to raise one again.

In the UK I feel like our various Spaniel breeds are the ones most people choose, and that's fine because they're wonderful too, but that meant I hadn't even heard of these breeds. What beauties!

My parents just got a new dog. He's tiny and a mutt. They just found out his main breed is munster and chihuahua. He's still a puppy so high energy. Very interesting mix. He runs through their yard as if it's an obstacle course. So much fun to play with.

Awesome video they are so cute! You should do a video about all dog breeds you agree that are for novice owners and your top apartment dog! I really like how to explain all these dog breeds. What do you think about Keeshond or American Eskimo? Do you think they are good for novice owners?

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  Před 4 lety +2

I would say that both, Keeshond and American Eskimo are a good choice for novices and they are also adaptable and can live in apartments. They both do have higher energy level, so they will need daily proper exercise. And yes, i can make a video about apartment dogs and dogs for novices :)

So I thought my dog was a brittany for 2 years and now I found out he is a mix of Munster with Britanny. He looks and acts just like a Munster but his tail is docked. Took me soooo long to get it but I finally know more about my buddy!
Edit: and the hair is shorter :) Love him to death!

The ones I've seen raised with cats do just fine with them and they actually love each other. Really it seems like every breed of dog when raised with cats, small dogs or children will be fine with them. Dogs need to learn how to accept other members of the family or there will be trouble in the future.
