Darren continues to amaze me at his knowledge and skills of his whiskey tasting. I found it kinda amusing that Eadaoin was really trying to identify and choose the Irish whiskey, but chose the Japanese one each time. 😅

Paddy took this one on the understated strength of some of his remarks. Even though Eadoin became an honorary Japanese citizen
Eadaoin had the perfect description: " smells like whiskey, I'm getting notes of....whiskey"!! Exactly how I like my whiskey.....smelling like whiskey and tasting like whiskey.
I love the respect that Paddy has for the liquor that he never leaves a drop in the glass.
The Teeling 24 year single malt is US$1,000 per bottle as of 4-17-2023. I'll never be able to afford to drink a drop!
Sean and Colin also have a bottle of Teeling 30 in their studio that's $2054.99.
And I see that Japan also has a 30 year old blend going for $9999.99
Got to get a group of friends to share the cost.

In Oregon, where the state controls hard liquor, there isn't any Teeling 24. There is the Teeling 30 for $2199.95. A liquor store in Albany has the entire state's supply of it with a total of 3 bottles.

Irish people using scottish stuff is actually probably the most irish thing ever, seriously the irish culture was so similar to the english in the 1900s so they tried copying scottish culture to make themselves a separate identity
Sometime when you do a tasting battle, don’t reveal what the two countries are. Mystery tasting-you won’t be trying to guess which one is Irish. It’s easier to pick the one you truly prefer. Unless you are Darren and he will probably know which is Irish anyway.

I know this sounds crazy to someone outside the whisky world, but running a tasting is much more complicated than this, and every person consider themselves whisky enthusiast would know that mistake any redbreast with Jameson black is outrageous.
I think Thomas and Darren are totally on the same wavelength and level of whiskey appreciation - they just express it differently. And if you enjoyed the drinks, wherever they're from, then it's a fine day. Well done all - slainte!

@@CCoburn3 well I was referring to why they didn't want him back. It was on one of the Tryers Post Facts updates or shortly after they started Try and that's what they said. He had issues with saying one thing and doing another. There was a situation that's all I remember it was years ago now.

I guess you've never tried Old Crow, which, as far as I can tell is made from dead, fermented birds.
The real whiskey is the friends we made along the way.
I've become a true lover of Tullamore DEW. During the pandemic, my local establishment was struggling to get Jameson. So, they started carrying Tullamore instead. I instantly became a huge fan. It's like a perfect marriage. The main label is aged in used bourbon barrels. That charred oak finish and the angel's notes of bourbon left in the wood smooth Tullamore out so much more and so much faster. They also make a whiskey finished in rum barrels, which I don't recommend, and one finished in sherry barrels that I've yet to try.
I was lucky enough to tour the distillery in November of 2021 when I could finally take my trip that had been on hold for close to 2 years.
It's not a Whiskey shoot without Darren telling you exactly what he's drinking at least once.
Thank God you finally had Eadaoin doing a Whiskey Try! She was outstanding, even though she picked all of the Japanese shots. I also love watching Paddy and Niall getting locked! This was a great video!! 10/10!

Y'know, I'm from the US, but both sides of my family going back 4 generations are half Irish or more, every parent and grandparent. Raised celebrating Ireland and her culture, the food, the music, etc.
I desperately love when y'all get the folk in here experiencing and comparing Irish goods vs. similar wares from other lands. What a great episode this was.

Been asking for this video from you guys for a year+ now. Glad to see it was almost what I expected. Though I was hoping for more pairings of Japanese whiskey's (Hibiki) that matched the profiles of the various Irish ones (Glendalough). The single malts were nice, too. Still, excellent bottles, and am glad you got Seamus on for this one. Good catch on Darren, as always, on noticing the softness of triple distilled in Irish.

Yoichi is now $65-70 in my area. Absolute steal at that price. They also have Teeling 32 and 33 at a nearby shop... for $3k and $3.3k respectively. For a 30+ year old whiskey that's fair enough but way outside my budget.
Darren gets a 10/10 for his whisky tastebuds.

I love that Tullamore Dew was represented! It's one of my favorites, and I've been drinking it for years. They just released a Rum Cask finished edition, which was also lovely. Cheers

Honest to God, Darren would make serious bank if he did nothing but whiskey tours. His pallet is seriously top notch.

The only thing different is between each shot take a sip of water to clear your palette, and you'll be able to get better tasting notes between each whiskey.

BONUS POINTS FOR TRY CHANNEL for the correct Whisky/Whiskey spellings. The originators of Japanese Whisky studied in Scotland and therefore it is spelled without the "e". (Just realized you may have just copied the spelling from the bottle. BONUS POINTS for being observant.)

Would've loved to hear Darren's opinion on some Suntory whiskies like Yamazaki or Hibiki. Yamazaki 12 is definitely one of my favorites.

This shows just how hard a professional whiskey tasters job is , and why a master distiller is worth their weight in cases of whiskey, it helps if you have an above average palate and smell , nice shoot , new york

I wish you'd put up a final score, both over all and ranking the "Irishness" of the various tryers'. That way we'd know for sure which Tryer(s) should be banished to some other island nation.
I remember the first time I tried proper nihōnshu sake. It was a lot stronger than I thought it would be, and to that point, was the strongest alcohol I'd had in my life.
Only alcohol every to make me stumble on just three shots.... Elon could use it for rocket fuel :)
Sake is typically only about the same abv as wine.
Eadoin always has amazing style and keen remarks. Definitely want to try a few of these after her and Darren’s remarks 😸

I agree, the tryers you listed are pretty much the Holy Trinity of TRY, but when they're absent - Darren by himself is more than capable to carry the show.

Love the content just hope next time they match the aging years, because it would be hard to find a whiskey aged 5-7 years that would beat a whiskey aged 24 years on aroma, and taste

Episode had a sever lack of Dermot
Whiskey, out of most other types of spirits, changes radically when you add water down to around 20% whiskey to water. Which is why it tastes so different when you take different sips as the ice melts (and why you don't want the clear, slow-melting ice cubes unless you want to wait 15 minutes to finish your whiskey). So it's not really a complete comparison when just having it neat (assuming it's room temp).

Ive heard before that general Japanese whikey will follow traditional scotch profile but will tend to be more lowkey and floral than traditional scotch. The main reason why is that when the craft of whiskey making was brought to Japan, the Japanese distillers took their instruction from Scottish distillers, but they had a hard time breaking into the mainstream of Japanese culture because the whiskey they were presenting was generally too assertive for the Japanese palate, so the Japanese distillers started incorporating local ingredients to compensate, thus the culture of Japanese Whiskey was born.
Why not do the black barrel from the second drink with the Japanese barrel aged whiskey from the first?

I think Darren is easily more knowledgeable than Ciara when it comes to whiskeys. She might be able to drink them all under the table and make a mean cocktail, but when it comes down to a neat pour and being able to identify it, Darren wins hands down.

Too many are doing this as a game of "figure out which country it's from, and find the Irish one" instead of "Which one do you prefer".
Kurayoshi and Togouchi are imported scotch bottle in Japan, Nikka from the barrel is a blend of scottish and Japanese whisky... so basically only the nikka discovery was actually Japanese whisky..

Drinking Nikka From The Barrel as I watch this. Probably one of the best daily drinking whiskeys I've ever had. But none of these whiskeys in the comparison suck. I'm happy drinking all of them.
I haven't had the Yoichi unpeated, but the peated is terrific.
