These casting tutorials are great! I do not have a vacuum or a pressure pot but I should get one. All of my castings are simply poured and while it works it still leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks for sharing this series.
Great video on resin tinting and coloring. I never understood why Mr. Rodgers changed shoes, slippas would have made more sense. : ) Mahalo for sharing!
He can be used anytime for any resin to speed up curing pressure ensures bubble free, mainly for clear. My pressure is also good when it's humid outside to prevent bubbles from moisture
love the videos. although this one doesn't have the links to the equipment. especially the right heated pressure pot, and the bottom large one. i was going to purchase
Hey Eric, is it possible to use a resin 3D print directly as a mold for PU(70)? Do you think it could work if enough mold release is used? Thank you in advance :)
Hello Mr Eric, can you twist and break some parts so we can get an idea of their strength? I'm trying to use polyurethane castings for a joystick for a short production run and if successful I'll get them injection molded. Would be nice to see a comparison.
resins come in many many hardnesses, use the one that suits your need, shore 80 is a good place to start it is very similar to an ABS lego, best of luck with your project
Can the pressure pot and vacuum tank be the same vessel, sometimes attached to an air compressor and sometimes a vacuum pump? Is the primary difference the clear top on the vacuum tank to allow you to see the bubbles?
Nice video! A lot to learn for a beginner. One question: is there anything that speaks against using that method for producing a small motorcycle fairing part?
Hi, I am trying to dye my white polyurethane resin. Do you have any suggestions on which dye or other material might get me a rich opaque black? Thank you.
Can the pressure pot be used with very soft - .e.g. 20A - transparent PU resin? I've heard that the bubbles can reappear when the pressure is released.
Hello Eric, I'm an industrial designer, just graduated & I have my first client. My client is looking for me to produce a HiFi prototype for a light sensitive technology. My question are: 1. what would be the ideal polyurethane or material I should use to create a very clear, non distorting or refractive molded piece? 2. Also are these hard pieces sand-able? 3. Finally, is it possible to have one of these casted parts be ultra clear on 1 side and slowly gradient out to a frosted look? Can this pieces be sand blasted to achieve frosted look? Thank you, just found your channel - great info!
Watch this video, it should answer some of your questions. czcams.com/video/Kp2YopgNLZc/video.html If you are going to resin cast your parts, then contact the resin MFG of your choice for the correct resins. I suggest BJB ent. or Rampf. Yes, PU is very sandable. Good luck!
@@EricStrebelFor PU 2 solutions, pure or charged. A filler is made from mineral... Or a mix from it with other. Pure, your PU is full liquid but have dimensions problems after hardening. When i create a fine thickness mould without filler it make fine little cracks after 1 week. With a filler, it's less liquid, but little shrinking. A filler cost half of resin... So it save money. Most common filler is marble powder. If i need strong mechanical properties it's an aluminium powder mix. I can give you a link and references to you. Prices are not hide. It's only for european professionnals. But you can better understand!
Hi Eric, love your CZcams vid's Watch em all the time, well i'm getting to end of your list so i'm looking forward to some new ones. Here's a question for you or maybe even a new video for you to do. Here we go... so my wife bought these silicon ice cube trays, they are awesome, ice comes out so easily without busting up the counter trying to get the ice out. Problem is she has no recollection where she bought them or were they a gift or something. So I have the mold, the existing ice cube tray, just wondering how you would go about replicating them and what products you'd use. I think my biggest concern is that whatever I make them with has to be food safe so I don't poison someone, ewww... now there's a thought eh lol! Anyhow, I look forward to hearing from you or maybe watching your ice cube tray video... hey I hope to get credit for the inspiration. cheers and thanks for the interesting and fun material you put out there, Tony L (Ottawa, Ontario)
Hi neighbor! Nice video. Interested casting polyurethane with a hole that I can tap with a self-tapping screw. Can polyurethane be tapped like that? Also wondering if threads can be cast in when using a silicone mold.
I have a question. I use 60A shore polyurethane resin vytaflex 60 and i vacuum all the bubbles in my pouring container but when i pour it into my mold i still get bunch of bubbles. Do you think I should maybe dry out my mold or is there a pouring technique? Thank you.
@@EricStrebel what about silicone resin? I have been wanting to switch to that. Will pouring silicone rubber resin create bubbles? Appreciate the help.
Hello, i want to make rubber tire for hot wheels, i make the master mold with 3d print sla, which means the material is solid. My question is should i recast it with polyurethane resin or silicone resin? thanks, sorry for this long question
@@EricStrebel I need to make the tire rubbery feel, so i need to recast it with pu silicone?, that is hard isn't it? is that okay to pour silicone resin into PU? it will come out easily from the mold? sorry for asking too much, i have zero experience about this
A two-digit scale measures to 1/100th of a gram, not 2/10ths of a gram. Although I am not sure what tolerances are needed for the resin casting. Accurate to 1 gram may be enough if you are working with the volumes you have (100+/-1g is +/-1%, while 100+/-0.01g is 0.01% ). I am sure it won't affect the hardness of the final product unless you are really changing the ratios.

Thanks
Keep the molding and casting coming! Great stuff!
Thanks! Will do!
So glad to see you were happy!😃
You make it look so easy, I am hoping to get into this casting this year
This video answered all my questions.. thank you.
Thank you 💚💚.
Ur videos are much appreciated.
I love the Motorhead shirt and Mr Rogers combo
Thanks thats help me a lot with the coloring methods 👍
Awesome video! Thank you very much.
Thanks. Don't have a purpose but it's nice to know where the information is once an application arises.
Wonderful Teacher!
amazing, just what i needed.
Excellent video's please keep them coming. Please explain more about your "Yoda" topper. I just bought the BVV carbon filter and t works great.
Great video per usual Eric! I find that alcohol inks work in place of resin dye for translucent epoxy or polyurethane resin.
Thank you. 😎👍

Yes
How well do opaque resins take Mica powders? will i need the same amount as with a clear or will i need to add extra?
Not great, you will get some effect in opaque, but you need a lot of mica for that

Can the pressure pot and vacuum tank be the same vessel, sometimes attached to an air compressor and sometimes a vacuum pump? Is the primary difference the clear top on the vacuum tank to allow you to see the bubbles?
I guess, you would need a special device to keep the lid on for the pressure
*****! Would the "brown" one be polished into a copper sheen or does that need more copper powder per resin and maby doing a slush cast?
That's a good question, I don't know but I tend to think not.
What type of PU is it ?? in order to buy in big drums, I like to know the company who is preparing, like to know the time rise, the expansion ....etc.
What are the advantages of using a vacuum chamber? Does it decrease amount of released carbon dioxide through the polymerization reaction?
Removing air from the silicone is the main purpose to avoid trapped air bubbles in the silicone to get better reproduction and surface quality.

No, I don't think so

Testing would be required, they certainly can appear with soft materials.

Try making a batch that is a little thicker and mix them into one

How does a polyurethane resin cast part behave at high temperature above Tg? Will it burn or porus? Thanks in advance for your answer.
It will get soft, check the specs from the manufacturer before us use it, to find the correct resin for your application

nice work dose it smell like regular polister
No
Interesting. I would have guessed to use vacuum to pull out every bubble, instead preassure it.
You really need both to get a good part.

Silicone is not cured under pressure

yes, it can be drilled and tapped

can you cast in specific SHORES ?
Yes
How long does it take polyurethane resin to dry?
Actually it cures, and it depends on the resin you choose

Pouring creates bubbles, and urethanes are moisture sensitive, you can heat the molds, but probably best to get a pressure pot
@@EricStrebel what about silicone resin? I have been wanting to switch to that. Will pouring silicone rubber resin create bubbles? Appreciate the help.
Some, yes. Use vibration to remove the bubbles from the silicone after you pour
hi eric , is polyurethane resin dangerous ? , can i cast in my bathroom (With mask ofcourse)
It has a low odor, you should be fine with a mask. Open the window and stay safe. Good luck
How does the polyurethane hold up to UV light
Depends if you get UV stable resin or not

Correct, my bad on the 10ths. It's mainly an issue for very small batches of one or two grams of resin
Your chocolate car prompted a question.
What plastic is used to vacuum form the molds for chocolates?
Don't you need to sand cold cast parts to get the metallic look?
That's what I was thinking, saw a few videos from manufacturers and they all sand with wire wool to reveal the metallic effect.
You can sand it a bit if you want, try and see how it goes
Is it possible; if I were to make a thin cast, to cut a few sections in the middle of it
Anything is possible you would have to cut the mold from the inside so you could remove your part. If I understand correctly what you're trying to do
